Is It Healthy If Food Is Running Through a Toddler's Body in 15 Minutes?!

Hi All,

For the past month, I have noticed my 22 month old poops pretty often right after eating. He went through a bout of the flu/diarrhea a few weeks ago so at those times I thought it was pretty normal. However, his poop is very normal now but today, I fed him some beans and within 10-15 minutes he pooped and there were the beans- he has not had beans in weeks so I'm pretty sure these were the same beans I fed him 15 minutes prior. I'm a little concerned as he is on the thin side and I wonder if his food is just running through him and he's not getting any nutrition? Anyone have any ideas or input?

So What Happened?

Hi All,

Thank you all so much for the responces. I am so embarrased and feel SUPER bad... turns out I was reminded my toddler had eaten a bunch of olives the day before and going back to look through the diaper- this is what it was. They looked just like the black beans he was eating. So sorry for the false alarm! )-:

I would have him tested for allergies and Celiac disease. Celiac have flattened Villi and cause food to pass virtually undigested at all. If he is underweight, has troubles sleeping, irritable it could be celiac. It may be poopooed by your ped and they will tell you they can't be tested this young. There is a screening at University of Chicago for Celiac in October. Also there are great ped GI's at Loyola.

I had a similar issue as a baby, and a young adult. It's definitely something to get checked out. As a baby it was due to an allergy to something I was eating. I fell off the growth chart for a while. Get him checked out & voice your concerns to your Ped soon! Good luck!

As a mother of two, and working in daycare for over 10 years, it does raise some suspcicion with me. Maybe an hour or so, but 15 minutes? I'll be interedted to hear what other moms have encountered. I would call the pediatrician. You may also want to introduce a probiotic to your son. They have some great chewable ones at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section of the health dept.

I know that it isnt unusual for adults...i know some people with high metabolisms who eat and then out it comes...I would run your concerns over with your MD...I would think that he still may have some sort of bug running thru his system...I would definately get this checked out.

Hi A., if you notice this happening often, you should call his pediatrician. There may be an allergy, or possibly (which would be worse) an inability for his body to absorb nutrients. However, my digestive system does the same thing, and I have neither of those - just every once in a while it decides it doesn't "like" something (and that's the best way I can describe it) and gets it out as soon as possible. It can be something that I've eaten before, or something that five other people eat at the same time with no problem, and my body will reject it. It's happened for as long as I can remember. But I have to say, 15 minutes is pretty fast and I don't think anything has passed through me that quickly!
Your son may just have what I have - a "particular" or "sensitive" digestive system. But with his age and the frequency, it's best to call the doctor just to make sure there's not an issue, and that the very least put your mind at ease!

Doesn't sound like a good thing. Was there something on the beans that might have caused them to go through quickly... oil, butter, something he doesn't typically have that maybe his system couldn't handle? I don't think pooping soon after eating is unusual at all, but if the food really passed through his system that quickly that's definitely not normal. I can't imagine he would have gotten any nutrition from it in that short time.

Keep a watch and keep a food diary with everything he eats so you can see if there's a pattern there. Also, I'd recommend getting him on probiotics in case he's still fighting something off. When my son was having issues with diarrhea a little younger than your son is, he would get daily probiotics to help restore beneficial bacteria to his gut, and also put digestive enzymes (sprinkled the contents of a capsule) on his food to help it get as much nutrition from it as it could upon the recommendation of his doctor. That's another thought of something to try if this does seem to be a pattern while you do some sleuthing or are waiting to see a doctor.

If he's been growing normally, even if he's on the thin side it just might be a stomach bug still at work if they were the same beans. Or it might be a sign of some other problem, such as a food intolerance (which was the reason for my son's diarrhea). If it happens again I'd probably strongly consider checking in with his doctor and maybe setting up an appointment depending what they say. They'll also know if there's something going around that might cause food to go through like that, so it's definitely worth checking into.

A.,
Do they weigh him when he goes in for his well visits at the pediatrician? They would definitely be able to tell if he is gaining weight normally, and if he isn't they should have noticed it and brought it up at his last appt. I wonder if it is still the virus trying to work it's way out of his system. My son who is 4 years old just had a stomach virus with vomiting x3days. I mostly gave him rice cereal mixed warmed up with water and applesauce(unsweetened, natural), pretzels, saltines, white toast, grilled cheese etc. His peds suggested apple, eggs, cheese for upset stomach. He said even just a piece of real apple vs. applesauce because of the sugar. I would try to keep your little guy on a bland diet like this for a while. Good Luck!

Hi A. I would have to said this is not normal. Take your son to see his peditrican. See what he/she saids about it. Not I'm not a doctor by no means, so it may not be nothing to worry about but check with his doctor first because they're the experts!!!
