Is He Too Sick to Attend?

My 3 year old came down with a cough Thursday night (we played out in the snow all day). Since Saturday he has had a clear runny nose. I am not worried, he has not had a fever at all, and is acting just like himself only with a cough and runny nose.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) evening we have a meeting with a pre-school, for enrollment this Fall. This is a group meeting, not a one-on-one and there is going to be activities for the kids to do. I know he is well enough to go, I just don't want the other parents to be annoyed that I brought him if he has a cough, I know runny noses do happen and I'm pretty sure his is nothing to worry about since it's clear.

This is just such a big milestone for him and I will feel terrible if he doesnt get to experience it. What should I do? I am going to call the director tonight and see what she thinks.

**The runny nose isn't really visable unless he sneezes or you get really close to him, it's not a steady flow of snot just some congestion built up inside that's not coming out. The big problem is the cough, it sounds horrible, it's really wet sounding.

What can I do next?

If i were to be there please don't bring her :).
Yes, I get annoyed when kids attend something when they're sick, even with a slight cold.
BUT
I also realize I go overboard, so, yes, I would suggest keep an eye on him and if he doesn't develop a fever you can take him. Kids have colds all thew time. If it were up to me, all sick kids should stay at home until no symptoms are visible. But I don't live in that utopia.

I would do what the director suggests. It's her 'world'.

Once he's IN preschool and has a cold like this, I would send him. Make sure he knows to cough into his elbow and how to blow/wipe his nose with a tissue. I only keep my girls home from preschool if they're *really* snotty and feel sick OR if they have a fever.

As long as he's not running a fever or tossing his lunch, he's fine to go.

Little cough, probably would take him. Visible snot flow, probably wouldnt. I prefer my kids not to play with kids with snot. Though I wouldnt say anything, but I would be sort of panicking inside.

I don't see a problem but wait for the director's response. ALso little noses does wonders. He is probably coughing ( and I'm not a doctor) because of the mucus. Clear the mucus and MOST likely the cough will clear as well.

I would have taken him and not bothered to call the director. The only caveat would be that he is ready, willing and able to play and fully participate -- if so, I think he should go as long as the mucus doesn't turn color or he develops a fever. My kids are passing this betwen them right now :( It stinks! Take some tissues with you (and keep his nose wiped) and some antibacterial handwipes or purell.

Have fun and enjoy!

Take him. As long as he's not running a fever or vomiting and he seems like he feels good it should be okay. Sounds like he just has a cold. If this fall is going to be his first time in a preschool setting you will be surprised at how often he will get sick.

My daughter started preschool right before she turned 3 and for the first year she was sick all the time. She had one or two colds a month and then there were lots of ear infections and strep throat. I ended up using all of my sick time up when she was sick and I had to start using my vacation time to take off with her. It seems like she was running a fever every few weeks. After that first year her immune system got much stronger and there are fewer sick days now.

I would suction his nose before going in to minimize the discharge. Keep tissues handy and go (as long as there is no fever, the runny nose is clear, and he is acting pretty normal).
