I've been here for years, since the Mamasource days. I find a lot of wonderful mamas and a few papas here, and feel I have friendships with some. Some of us do a lot of private messaging and it's very rewarding. There are the spam bots telling us how to make $78 an hour on computers - which I wish the moderators/managers could get rid of sooner. The same ones keep popping up and it's almost always with very odd member names.
There are the teens and the sex trolls and a few super needy people who others assume are either teens or trolls. There are 1 or 2 consistently nasty people whose comments I just ignore because they are so mean and critical, but I do worry that they are turning off brand new members who feel attacked and belittled. Then there are dozens of people whose opinions I respect even if I don't always agree. I find a lot of those will catch a comment in a question that I skipped over, and offer wonderful perspective. I like to look at who sent me flowers, which tells me that I make some sense or raise good points for the questioners. And I try to make sure I send flowers or even some PMs to let people know I appreciate their efforts. There are a couple of people who just make me laugh out loud with their funny (but not cruel) comments, and I usually shoot them a note about that too.
I find a lot of respect for religious differences and traditions here too, which I appreciate in general but also as a member of a religious minority. I also think most people on this site are respectful of questioners whose first language is something other than English - I like how people gently probe to find out what the person meant as opposed to what they actually said.
I also think a number of people have great expertise in certain professional areas, and that's a benefit.
I do think we have far fewer questions than in the old days, and few members. I know the moderators will say we have more members, but I think that is statistical info and may include the spammers at first. I don't know for sure, but I also think it's possible that there are people who signed up for accounts but don't actually ask or answer questions, so these numbers aren't actual participants. With fewer questions, I wonder if people answer things they might normally skip over, so there seems to be a lack of "depth" (can't think of a better word at the moment) - same people are answering all the same questions, so we aren't getting the input we used to from so many different people who only pick the questions they are truly interested in. So I think things sometimes get a little stale.
There are some wonderful members who just don't participate as much as they used to - Anne L. is a professor, Marilyn S. is a nurse (turns out we have a mutual friend), Marda is law enforcement, etc. - and it's always great when they log on and share. I love when we support each other through tough times too.
