Is Anyone Else Get Annoyed with Repetitous Noises???

Okay, we all have pet peeves but I get very annoyed with certain kinds of noises especially if they repeat themselves over and over. It's so bad that I will have to literally remove myself from the room to get away from the noise. I mean it gets under my skin really bad. One example is when the dog goes to licking herself especially her bottom (that's gross in itself) but it really drives me nuts. Another thing is I can't handle a lot of commotion around me. If there are a lot of people around me and a lot going on, I get what I call a panic attack of sorts. It's like sensory overload. I have to leave the room. It becomes hard to breath and I get completely stressed. Oh, another thing is I can't stand to have anything on my hands at all! Now this gets to be rather difficult to deal with in the bedroom if you know what I mean. Let me put it this way, anytime I get anything on my hands I literally want to gag. That's how bad it is. As I get older, I have noticed this all just gets worse. I'm on an anti-anxiety med which does help because at least I can handle it somewhat. Without the meds, I get completely bent out of shape. Not only does it drives me batty but it affects my husband and kids to a degree. They sometimes feel like they have to walk on egg shells around me. I hate that for them. Do any of you experience this or do you have any idea of what this could be? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Chewing in my ear or swallowing near me are REALLY bothering me these days. I almost get angry.

Do you get vigorous exercise? I think that might help.

Some of these traits can be part of being an Introvert, instead of an Extrovert. I am an Introvert, based on all assessments I've taken. I've actually taught a class on Introversion. Introversion just means that you gain energy internally, and outside stimulation and people drain your energy. Introverts need quiet time and time alone to recharge.

I can't stand the TV on all the time! Since my divorce 4 years ago, I don't have TV in my house. I HATED how it was left on when no one was in the room, or no one was watching it. My daughter watches DVDs now and that doesn't bother me, as it is more controllable. I refuse to talk over the TV noise. I need quiet time.

I get a feeling like claustrophobia in crowded places sometimes. I do not go to the Mall of America on a weekend or during the entire month of December. It totally freaks me out to be in a crowd like that.

I am sensitive to smells. I don't have any allergies, but just don't like strong perfumes or colognes, or hairspray, or...

I don't wear necklaces or other jewelry as it can drive me nuts. And my clothes need to be comfortable, not tight or itchy or irritating at all.

It's so great that you are working on this to help your family and yourself.

It sounds like OCD or obsessive/compulsive behavior to some degree, in addition to the anxiety you describe. Are you in therapy in addition to the meds? I really don't know much about the disorder, but I wonder if cognitive (behavioral) therapy, combined with the medication, might help you overcome the triggers.

Good luck!

Yes! I want to scream at the tv sometimes ----answer the damn phone!!!! I hate the phone ringing and no one picking it up, even when it's on tv.
I don't even like repititve songs. When a song is just looping the same thing over and over - for instance the song playing right now in my office is taking it to the streets, taking it to the street, takin it to the street ---aaaaagghhhhh I could smash the squak box! I'm so busy and pulled in so many directions. I hear my name 100 times a day and everybody is asking a question or asking for something. It gets really chaotic sometimes. I just have to yell - hey! time out. one at a time. No tips for you. I just thought I'd tell you I feel that way sometimes too.

Yeah, I'm with Sue! I could say all of those things as well! I like peace and quiet (when I can get it), and sounds that are repetitive, shrill, loud, etc, drive me CRAZY! So having kids is fun. LOL

My parents have told me that even when I was a newborn, I liked quiet, and if they took me around my dad's (huge, loud) family, I'd cry inconsolably until my mom went into another room with me and closed the door on all the noise. So I'm pretty sure that people like us are just born this way. We can de-sensitize ourselves to noise to some extent, but we'll never love it.

I am the exact same way. If I'm in a room with too many people and lots of noise, I get overwhelmed pretty easily. My son is the same way. I also can't stand repetitive noises; I never understood how people could leave their turn signals on because the quiet click-click noise drives me crazy!

I am planning to read a book called The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron; I looked at it a little at the bookstore and it sounds a lot like me (sensitive to loud or repetitive noises, to crowded rooms, etc.). I took the self-test and I matched a lot of the descriptions, so I'm planning to find the book at the library. If you want to check out her website (the self-test is on there, too) it is http://www.hsperson.com/; very interesting stuff. Good luck!

I can't stand repetitive noises, especially if I can't figure out where they are coming from. Or if I can't fix them soemhow. One of our monitors has a static issue sometimes and it's starts repetitively ticking with static. It drives me nuts! And I can't fix it. My dear ol' hubby will get up in the middle of the night to make it stop for me.

Sometimes the fan will swing just right while it is on and it makes the chain pull tick. ARRGHHHH!

I think I am definitely an introvert. I'm not wild about lots of people around me and it seems I've passed this trait on to my DS. He doesn't like tons of kids around either. And there is a ticking noise that our AC unit makes that drives him nuts, too. :-)

Wow - I love what Sue W. said about Introversion! I would have always considered myself an extrovert (and so would people I know) I thought it meant being open and personable. But I totally gain my energy internally and often need time alone (and quiet) to recharge. I also dislike repetitive noises and too many different noises at the same time - I call it noise pollution!

I think you and I are related. EVERYTHING you have described is ME! I went to the Dr. because I would get so irritated that it would make my blood boil over any little thing. THE dog licking themselves, alot of people, PEOPLE REPEATING themselves, etc. I am on lexapro - not sure which one you are on but I can tell you this, there are people still alive today because of that medication. I think this is something we just have to learn how to control somehow. Good Luck!

Ditto the Sensory Processing Disorder. My daughter was just diagnosed, and I recognized myself in all of the information I was reading. If you do a Google search on it, there are some sites with really good info. =)

Noise really bothers me, and while stuff on my hands doesn't really bother me, certain food textures do, and I'm constantly wiping my mouth with my napkin while eating because feeling food around my mouth bothers me. I also have trouble with a lot of people around, and when I get overwhelmed, I have to go be by myself for a little while. Luckily, hubby doesn't question it too much. He knows that "my wife will explode if she doesn't leave now" look. LOL

I hope you get some answers! =)

I am the same way, and I can't stand loud noises at all either even if they aren't repetitive. I often wear earplugs at home, and at school my students have learned not to tap or make any repetitive noises. All I have to do is give them a look and they stop. It makes me crazy when they start doing it absent-mindedly!

I know some people said this sounded like OCD but I think the people that mentioned sensory issues (Sensory Processing Disorder) are probably headed in the right direction. You should google search Sensory Processing Disorder...there are therapies for it for more severe cases (which I think it sounds like you have)...I believe it is Occupational Therapy that usually helps SPD. I have a mild case & when I feel overwhelmed by something, I try to remove myself from the situation. The most important thing I've learned to do is to know what is going to set me off & try to avoid it. If my kids are going to be playing in the living room with their toys, I turn the tv off...the two noises together drive me nuts. Basically, as I understand it, people with SPD have a sensitive nervous system. So, things that wouldn't normally bother other people will send someone with SPD into "fight or flight" mode...your nervous system is simply overwhelmed & can't process all of the stimulation that's coming in. Anyway, I hope this helps you some...look into it online & see what you can find! Best of luck & God bless!

It does sounds like OCD a bit, but I also get jumpy about repetitive noises, even the birds outside (and they are so cute) can be disturbing. And quite possibly, don't know your age, but our hormones are out of wack as we get older and they can do some numbers on us. Keep experimenting with ways to change this.Whoever prescribes anti anxiety medication maybe can come up with other ideas. Good luck!

I am the SAME way!!!! I HATE repetitive noise!! I work in a hospital and the monitor alarms make me CRAZY!!!!!! Anything.....the phone ringing, dog barking, oven timer going off.....AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! I feel that overloaded feeling, too!! This, then, leads to me needing lots of personal space, as well. Something my husband and 4 yr old aren't too fond of! Don't know the reason why I'm that way. Just know that you are not alone!

I know exactly what you are talking about. My dogs cleaning themselves, people chewing, people picking at their nails, most little, repetitive sounds drive me absolutely crazy. I can't stand them at all and must leave the room. I also have issues with things on my hands, especially lotions or creams, but not to the extreme you do. I have been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. I wonder if you may also have this?
