Is Anyone Dealing with a Aspergers Diagnosis?

My 11 year old son has had many diagnosis since kindergarten. The latest is Aspergers. We do see about 75% of the symptoms but still are not sure. School is also unsure about the diagnosis. I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this problem? My son is in a emotionally impaired classroom and is still not doing well in that environment. I feel like I need to get this under control before puberty hits and things could get worse. I would love to hear if anyone knows of any support groups. Thanks

So What Happened?

I really appreciate everyone's advice. It's nice to know I'm not a lone. Six years of this so far is very exhausting. Some days I have to laugh about my son just to keep from crying. The diagnosis we got was from a psychiatrist at a clinic they are currently trying to get my son in a county EI school. The schools do not think he is severe enough and does not understand why I want to send him there. I consider being called nearly everyday to calm my child down on speaker phone, picking him up early and being suspended 7x so far this year (one for breaking a laptop that I have to pay for now) severe enough! The journey continues I suppose it always will. I just need to take one day at a time. Thanks for listening!

My passion is helping kids on the spectrum improve their symptoms through nutrition.

I posted some good videos on my website:

Hi a few years ago my daughter was diagnosed with asperger's. For years they said ADD. I had never heard of aspergers before and did not know much about autism. I still don't 100% believe it. I don't know if it is because being a parent I don't want anything to be wrong or I do not see all the symptomes either. She does struggle socially and she is going on 16. She is in an alternative school and she seems to really like it there. You can do a search on google and they will give you all kinds of sights. A coulpe I know are Autism society of Michigan, they have macomb and oakland chapter. Also O.A.S.I.S. and AS and proud of it. If you would like to talk feel free to email me. Good luck.

Aspergers is a form of autism. Your story sounds alot like mine. It is hard to help our children when they are diagnosed with different problems and it seems like no one can agree on a treatment. Autism speaks is a great organization to start with. I have to do some research in the next few days and I will be happy to forward any useful links I find.
Hang in there and remember our sons may be different, but different can be good when they grow up.
I'll get back to you if I find anything.
To start follow this link to a list of autism organizations.

I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulty trying to find a diagnosis for your son. It must be very frustrating dealing with doctors who cannot give a definite answers to you and your son. Have you tried seeking alternative care?
I am a Chiropractor at Khalil Family Chiropractic Wellness and Intervention in Eastpointe, MI. Chiropractors are not neck and back pain doctors, we are nervous system doctors. Our bodies are self healing and self organizing. The central nervous system (our brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (the nerves that branch out of the spinal cord and go to the cells, tissues, and organs in our bodies) control how our bodies heal and organize itself. If there is any interference in the communication of our nervous system with the body, then there will either be increased activity or decreased activity, either way the body is no longer functioning at it’s highest potential. Chiropractors call this interference a subluxation (sub-lux-a-tion). This interference/subluxation is caused by three major life stresses- Physical stress (trauma, repetitive motions, poor posture); Biochemical stress (preservatives in food, drugs- prescription, alcohol, smoking); and Mental or Emotional stress.
As you probably already know, Asperger’s Syndrome is a neurological developmental compromise. This neurological interference is resulting in developmental cognitive and social behavior compromise. If spinal nerve interference exists it may increase the symptomatic presentation and if it is corrected then the symptomatic presentation may decrease. There is no medication that will correct this interference, it will only mask the symptoms and create additional interference to the neurological system. As for a support group, I do know of Mary Tocco with Michigan Opposing Mandatory Vaccines (M.O.M.) she may be able to help you find out some more information about Asperger’s Syndrome. Her website is www.salineguide.com.mom. Please also feel free to contact our office, at Khalil Family Chiropractic Wellness and Intervention, for more information of removing neurological interferences. Yours in body and spirit

Hi J..

My 15 year old son was just diagnosed with Asperger's last year at 14 years old. He also goes to an emotionally impaired program.

It took us over 10 years going to various doctors and therapist, getting multiple diagnosises over the years that would kind of fit, but not really. When he started the EI program, he was on the violent side and we thought he needed to be there, but now we are questioning if EI is the most appropriate place for him because, like you said, he is not doing well in that environment. He is no longer as violent as he was and has gained better control of physical out bursts, but we learned that those episodes were part of his AS because of his frustration.

Has he seen the EI programs psychologist or psychiatrist, if they have one? My son goes to Beacon Day Treatment in Inkster and at first, after his diagnosis, they weren't sure about it either, but we recently met with the schools psychiatrist and she seems to agree with his outpatient psychiatrist about the diagnosis.

If you are still unsure if your son has the proper diagnosis, I suggest looking for a Doctor who specializes in the Autistic Spectrum for a second opinion evaluation because they would have a better idea about what to look for in an Asperger's diagnosis than a regular doctor or psychiatrist.

Good luck and I hope that you find the answers that you need.

Hi J., my 10 year old son has Asperger's. However he was just diagnosed at the age of 8. There are so may symptoms that there is no way that your son will have 100% of them however, everything I see in my child is part of the diagnosis. He is currently in a "normal" classroom however he spends at least an hour a day in the Resource room at school for extra help. Our biggest obstacle right now is his awareness. He appears to be so tired and sleepy, sometimes he falls asleep but other times he appears to be in a complete trance, almost hypnotic state. If you google Asperger's, you will get so much info. As you read about it more, you will find that your heart, as a mother, will tell you if your son has it or not. The more I educated myself about it, the more I know my son was diagnosed properly. Good Luck, L. - Madison Hts, MI.

Where was he diagnosed at? I have two aspie girls one is 11 and one is 9 Best place to start to get a decent diagnosis is Macomb ISD obviously you are in the system with them, if you feel that isnt the proper placement for him go to them and basically tell them that and get him placed where he is best situated. He is 11 the only place right now because of his age probably would be Boz depending on where "he is at" The best advice I can give is holler at them untill you get what you want for your son. You are the parent they have to listen to you. GL and keep us updated.
