Hello Moms,

My husband and I have enrolled our 25 month old in a toddler Montessori program to start in August. The toddler program is specifically geared for children aged 18 mos to 3 years and is limited to a maximum enrollment of 12 students. Our goal in enrolling him is to encourage age-appropriate socialization and encourage early learning and developmenet in a less structured environment. During our most recent office visit, our pediatrician felt that Montessori schooling is excellent; however, expressed that our son may be too young "to sit for long periods of time". Our son loved the environment during our 1.5 hour school tour, and even felt comfortable enough that he remained in the classroom with the staff and other children while our family continued the tour. In short, I am wondering if I should be concerned about preschool at his age? The only other alternative is a daycare program, and I feel that this alternative may be less beneficial. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After a second facility tour, and an few personal interviews with parents whose children have been attending the school since 18 months, we have decided to procede with the enrollment. Thanks for all of the great feedback!

I do not have any personal experience with Montessori programs. However, my understanding of them is that (even in elementary grades) they are less structured than a traditional school environment. I would assume if it is a reputable program that they focus on socialization and early learning skills (as you mentioned) rather than an environment where he has to sit for extended periods of time. I would recommend talking to other parents whose children have gone through the same program. Perhaps they can give you some insight to put your mind at ease!

Wow I'm just amazed that you would have to ask that question. I'm a stay-at-home mom of a precious 2 year old little girl and she can count to 15, 5 in Spanish and knows her ABC's. All from interacting with me and her siblings.
I can't imagine putting her in pre-school. I love to watch her roam around either just at home or at the park with her curious little mind just working up a storm. I can't imagine stiffling her own curiosities and interest for a curriculum based program. Day Care is not always bad...sometimes it's just good to let kids be kids. They grow up so quickly anyway the last thing I want is for her to start at such a curious little age.

HI Moya,
We enrolled our son (now 29 months-old) in a Montessori program when he was 18 months. He did really good and learned a lot from the school. I just have good things to say.
Just email me if you have any other question.
Where is he going to?

My twin girls started preschool at 2 years old, and have THRIVED there! At this age, their minds are like little sponges, and they want to learn! So I say YES, do it! Expose them to all the learning tools available! I think the montessori teachers will know what is age-appropriate, and doubt they would expect them to sit for long stretches, without engaging them in an activity. Try it - it can't hurt!
