I am afraid to admit my 2 and 5 year old go to sleep at 10. I usually shoot for 9 or 9:30 but sometimes it's 10.
My family has always been the stay up late family wake up late. We arent a lazy family we just hold our family gathering later etc...Given I know children need their sleep but I think 9 is too early. ESPECIALLY FOR SUMMER! I think 10 is a good time year round. Even my daughter has mentioned not being able to sleep and just laying in bed because she is not sleepy. Opinions please

It's not too late if it works for your family. Everyone is different, and as long as the kids are getting the sleep they need by sleeping in later (at age 10 they should still be getting close to 10 hours) then all's well.
My GD, 10 last March, stays up to 10:00 on weekends and during the summer, but she goes to bed at 9:00 during the school year. She has said that she stays awake, but when I go check on her around 9:30, 90% of the time she's asleep.
I have decided that when she starts waking up consistently on her own at or before her regular time to get up, then I'll consider making a later bedtime.
Each child is different. If yours can get up when he needs to and be fully rested after going to bed at 10:00, then there's no reason not to.
Summer time at 10 is ok at our house. During the school year our 10 year old goes to bed at 9, was 8 till last year. Our 7 year old goes to bed at 8 but might not fall asleep till 8:30. They get the sleep they need and do well in school. I would adjust it if they didn't function on less sleep.
My grandaughter gets a reprieve from school time schedule during summer vacation. Of course, I stay over so she doesn't have to get up early.
School nights she goes to bed at 8. If for some reason she stays up till 9, we need a mechanical lifter to get her up in the morning!
Every kid is different. If this schedule works for your daughter, GREAT!
Some recent studies have suggested that kids who go to bed later and get up later are more likely to be overweight/tend to be less healthy than kids who go to bed and wake up earlier, even if they sleep the same hours. I haven't read enough about it to assess whether or not I think it's legit.
But I didn't let my daughter stay up that late at 10 years old...I think her bedtime was 9pm.
during the school yr, 8pm for my 9 yr old and 9pm for my 12 yr old.
I pretty much keep that in the summer only for a few reasons....
Gives my husband and I time at night with out kids and just to watch a movie they can't see.
The girls have long days and fun activities and need sleep to get through.
There has to be a time where the day just ends..... it is good for them to have a full day, not not a ful night every night. Their bodies need rest !
But over all it is really for the marriage and I don't have to wait to sleep at 11pm because the house is not calmed down.
I guess it depends on how early they have to get up. My 9 year old is in bed most nights (during school year) between 8:30-9, maybe 9:30 if he has a late baseball game. And summer is by 9:30pm. School bus comes at 6:55, so he needs to be up by 6:15 each week day to have time to dress and eat breakfast.
I agree. My 10 year old went to bed around 10 all school year last year. He had to get up at 8am to get ready for school. That's 10 hours of sleep which is enough for a child that age. Now that we are on summer vacation I let him stay up even a bit later. It works for us. My husband doesn't have to leave for work until 8.45 and I'm a SAHM, so we all can sleep long and stay up long. Totally works for us.
Whatever works best for your family. As long as he's getting at least 9 hours of sleep, it doesn't matter.
