Irritated at Irresponsible Pet Owner!!

There is a family that lives across the street from me, and their dog is making me crazy. I am normally a very laid back relaxed type of person but this behavior is just pushing me over the edge. The neighbors dog comes to my yard every day to "do it's business". Now if this happened once in a while no big deal, but every stinking time they let the dog out of their house it comes directly to my yard, Across the street. This particular neighbor has come to me and said I know my dog is using your yard "for business", I will send one of my children over to clean up. That never happened! I yell at the dog and shoo it away from my yard every time I see it there. I feel like I am becoming the crazy lady, regarding this dog. The dog even feels it necessary to come and do the business just outside my front door, which only add fuel to my fire. Yes, I have dogs and they use my yard but they are tiny dogs and it's my yard. I don't allow my dogs out of my yard to use the yard of other neighbors. The dog in question is not a tiny dog. Yes, it is bothering other neighbors too, the neighbors who don't have dogs are finding presents in their yard as well. Any advice? I am building animosity for this family because of this and I don't want to do that. I feel that talking to them about it again would be useless. Do I have any options?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your responses. It's nice to know that I am not being the "crazy lady". I do live in a neighborhood and most of the families here have the invisible fence (no HOA). The neighbor across the street does not have any type of fence, nor do they watch the dog while it's outside. They let it out the back door and it runs right around to the front of the house and across the street to my yard. This family and I happened to be at the same event yesterday evening, apparently they arrived home a few minutes before I did, because as I was approaching my home, what to I see in the front yard??? Yep, their dog leaving a present! I was too mad at that point to say anything to them or they may have called the police on me. They used to walk the dog on the leash (never with a bag in hand), but they don't any longer. I will look into the local leash laws and I like the idea of printing them out a copy. I have considered calling animal control (as have many of my neighbors) but we live rural and by the time anyone from animal control would get to where I live, the dog would already have returned home. I have seen many interactions with this family before and they always act as the victims and that the other party is over reacting. I can totally see them doing that in this case too. I would gladly hose the dog but unfortunately I don't always catch it in the yard, I just see proof that it has been there. The times I do catch the dog and shoo it away, if I go back inside the dog will come right back to my yard. I have considered cleaning the poop and putting it in their yard, but I honestly don't think they would notice or care. At this point I don't care if they clean it, I just want the dog to STAY OUT of my yard! I will be speaking to local authorities regarding irresponsible pet owner's too. My sympathies to the poster who now deals with poop smears because they asked the pet owner's to be responsible. I can't even imagine that. The owner's in that case sound quite unstable.
Again Thank you :)

Take photos with date and time stamps while the dog is doing it, and report them to Animal Control. Allowing their dog to go into neighbors' yards to do its business unattended like that on top of not cleaning up after their dog are both illegal.

Why are they letting their dog out in the front to do it's business anyway? Do they not have a backyard? I would go over and tell them they need to stop letting their dog out in the front without a leash. I can't imaging allowing my dog to do that even once and not be responsible and pick up. Her kids can easily put a leash on the dog and stand there while it "goes" in their yard.

Next time, take the dog poop and drop it DIRECTLY on their doorstep? About one pace out of the door, so that hopefully THEY will step in it when they leave the house?

Knock Knock. "Hi, I know you said you would have one of your kids or family take care of your dog's poop. I need that to happen today, please. In the future, please keep your dog in your own yard. I don't appreciate having to step around piles of dog-doo on the way in and out."

Are they obeying your city's leash law? That's the next step. If they aren't cleaning up after their dog, let them know that it needs to be on a leash outside or that you will be reporting the dog as a nuisance.

Or walk to their door each and every time with a plastic bag. "This is for your dog's poop. Please come clean it up now."

I have no patience for this, personally. It's disgusting when people are too lazy to pick up after their pets.

Contact your Department of Neighborhood services. Since you've had communications with your neighbor already, & they didn't result in the desired outcome (ie. dog not coming into your yard) you need to register a complaint with the city.

In my city, complaints are kept annonymous. You can make sure to request that as well. If their dog goes in multiple yards, they won't know that it was YOU who called.

Truly, there are 2 issues at hand here - the first is the dog not being under the control of it's owners, & the second is trespassing/destruction of property by the dog, which the owners are not doing anything to prevent.

If the city is not able to get ideal results (contact them at least 1 additional time if things don't improve) you might want to put up a nice decorative fencing around your permiter - maybe 2-3 feet high. Enough to deter the dog from coming into your yard. (Sucks to be your neighbors if you do this, but hey!)

Good luck, too bad these pet owners are making a bad name for responsbile dog owners. T.

ETA: I do NOT recommend doing something directed at the dog to deter it's actions (noise maker, water spray, etc.) Given that it is not your dog, you don't know how it will react. And prolonged deterance measures can make a dog aggressive/fearful, which can lead to unpredictible behavior. For your safety, & the dog's well-being, any deterrance should really be targeted at the owners, per advice above & from others.

My FIL pops an air rifle, it's empty and just makes a big noise. The dogs that wander in his yard will jump and run. They eventually get the idea and won't step foot in his yard.

You can spray the dog with water, use a high power squirt gun, do something that will make it jump but not hurt it in any way.

Whenever the dog goes to your yard and poops, take PHOTOS, AND then at that moment go to their house, knock on the door and SAY it to them, their dog is NOW at your house and pooped and tell them "can you come and pick it up?" and show them the photo of their dog doing it.
Do this repeatedly, EACH time.

And how the heck is the dog even getting out of their house/yard and then meandering and cruising around the neighborhood to poop? Aren't there leash laws?
Call the Humane Society or Animal Control, anonymously.

They sound lazy and don't care because their dog isn't pooping in THEIR yard.

First, I'd talk to the neighbors again. Since they approached you initially, then I'm sure they would understand if you spoke to them about it again. They may have told the kids to come over to clean it up and the kids are lying about doing it. Seriously, what kid wants to clean it up, even in their own yard? If they have this little regard for how their dog is behaving, the kids are probably not getting much more attention. When they say "I'll send a kid over" ask when you can expect see them.

If that doesn't work, when the dog starts to squat, spray him with the jet setting on the hose and he'll go running home wet - interrputed and probably uncomfortable. Maybe them dealing with a soaking, stinky dog will motivate them to address the problem, because right now they don't have a problem - they get to have a clean yard while the neighborhood has a problem. Hopefully after enough times of this, he'll realize your yard is not a comfortable place to be.

If that doesn't stop him, take pictures every time he is squating with date/time stamps and call animal control.

Do you live in a neighborhood with a homeowners' association? If so, contact them. Like others advised, take pictures for proof. I bet a fine from the HOA would straighten them out. Your neighbors are super rude and lazy. I hate it when people do this. If you don't have an HOA, I'd call animal control for sure

Do we live in the same neighborhood!!!! My neighbor had has 2 big black labs who like leave a huge dump in my yard!!! Always peeing on my rubbish barrels and or pooping in front of my three season door. My neighbors are whac-a-doodles!!!
When I went to their home the first time, I asked them nicely to please put their dogs on a runner when they let them out because they are pooping all over my patio and peeing everywhere. NOTHING WAS DONE. The second time I went I was still really nice and spoke with the man (asswipe) of the house and he assured me this will never happen again. The third time I was freakin pissed off. I know it showed loud and clear!!!
The next day I came out with poop smeared all over my car wheels and under the handles of my trash barrels. Yup thats what I got for complaining about the dogs crapping all over my patio. The next time I yelled at the dogs to get out.......this just a few weeks ago. I had poop smeared all over my shovels and I did not notice it at first. We had a huge snow storm. I grabbed my shovel and I was wondering why mud was on the pole part and handle. You guess it!!! It was a nice fresh poop!!!
I am beside myself that they would do this. I did not see them. But I know it was my my neighbors.
I have to wait till I see them running lose. I will call the animal control then make a report to the police what happens when I complain. So good luck!!!

I am fairly sure there are leash laws in every state. Contact Animal Control, usually through the Police Department and and file a complaint. If you can take pictures of the dog running the neighborhood off a leash.

The Animal control officer will contact the owners and explain to them the dog must be on a leash or fenced in when outside or they could lose the dog.

If you've only talked with her once then it's time to talk with her again. Don't wait to build up more animosity. It's even possible that she thinks her kids are cleaning it up.

There likely is nothing you can do about his except work with the neighbor who owns the dog. You could call county animal control and claim that the dog is a stray but that would be illegal and very unkind. Off leash is rarely enforced in my city due to budget cuts.

You could call Animal Control and ask about the city/county ordinance concerning this situation. They may have a way to help you.

If this neighbor is otherwise nice, please don't let their dog cause animosity. Work with them.

My neighbor has a large dog that frequently gets away from them and poops in my yard. I just scoop the poop. So do the other neighbors. I do not see a reason to ruin my relationship with them and upset the neighborhood ambiance. Sometimes things are just what they are and we do better to adjust.

Check your local leash laws. In my area, it is illegal to let your dog or cat roam free. They must be on a leash when not on your property. If let outside to run around, it must be in a fenced yard, dog run, etc that prevents them from running off. Poop is irritating, but the primary reason for the law is safety.

If your area has the same laws, then take photos of their free-roaming dog and report it.

Leash Law Violation. I would contact your local police department to find out what to do. This dog is NOT SAFE, this dog could decide to bite at any moment this dog could cause a car wreck. Your BEST bet is to simply contact your police department and consult them.

I have now read posts and I fear the squirting and pennies will only anger the dog and could create cause for a biting issue - simply contact the authorities.

I think that you might actually train the dog to go in his own yard if you pick up his feces and drop it in his own yard within the path that he walks to YOUR yard. Try that. Put it in the same place every day. Don't wait til it dries.

You might call a vet and ask if there is a product that will remove the scent that an animal uses to come back to in order to do it's business.

If you want to get really OBVIOUS about it, you could just deposit the feces on the front porch. I wouldn't do that myself, but the family may actually stop allowing the dog to go out of their yard if they find feces on their front porch every day...oh, and forget the bag...

So this may not be the most direct approach, but I usually go with the path of least resistance. I would talk to them and say "it's so nice of you to have your kids pick up the dog poop in my yard, there's actually some there right now". And then say you noticed he's doing it in other neighbors' yards as well, and you're afraid they may make a complaint. (I'm hoping there's a leash law where you are- I know in many places dogs can't just run free). You wanted to give them the heads up. This way, you aren't making a threat, you are acting like the nice guy by warning them that other neighbors don't seem happy and since they don't have dogs they aren't as sweet as you about this, etc., etc.

If they don't make a change, maybe send them an anonymous letter signed 'an annoyed neighbor'. Or just make an anonymous complaint to the city. They will still not think it was you! You can't let that go on, it's ridiculous.

Whimpy, I know. But if you're like me, you just don't want problems with neighbors.

High fences make good neighbors. Though you are right, and you shouldn't have to be the one taking care of this on your own dime, you can be right or you can be happy: get a fence that will keep the neighbor's dog out and your dogs in. Simple.

I would definately take your pooper scooper and throw it back in their yard. I agree that you shouldn't have to interact with the poop at all, but since there is a problem...you need to deal with it. I've been known in the past to scoop up the poop and put it back onto my neighbors property. I think it is just plain rude to allow their dog to do this and then not clean it up. Gross and irresponsible too!

If they don't get the hint from that, then I would start putting it somewhere a little more noticable like on their walking path, and if that still doesn't work, put it at the front door.

Sorry that your neighbor is so rude and ignorant.

I had neighbors who had a dog who got out of their fenced yard all the time and came to my yard, came into my garage to eat the cat food, and I let it go until one night he got out and ripped through my garbage dragging it all over my yard. I called the police via recommendation from animal control, and then an officer came out. Yes the dog was back in their house by the time he got here, and he knocked on their door, talked to them and someone, I am assuming them cleaned up my yard, and the dog never got out again. A little police warning was all it took. But I think they just didn't take care of the dog, he was hungry. I felt bad for the dog, but you have to take action if you want change. I would say call animal control or the local police. It won't matter if the dog is not there when they arrive. Or even if the dog is back in their house. Call anyway. Even one visit may scare them enough to do something.

Find out the leash laws. Are dogs allowed to roam unleashed in your area?
If not, print out a copy of the law and give it to the neighbors. Highlight the relevant parts of the law. Tell them nicely that (1) you are concerned that their dog will end up hit by a car and (2) the dog's business in your yard is now affecting your ability to care for the yard and your own dogs' willingness to use your yard -- have you noticed whether your dogs are reluctant to use some parts of the yard where this dog has pooped?

If they cannot take that hint, then next time you see the dog on your property, call animal control and ask them to come immediately. Even if the dog is back on their property by the time animal control comes, I would ask the officers to go to that family and explain that they are violating the leash laws and that animal control will pick up their dog if it is seen roaming off their property.

If the dog persists after that, call animal control every single time you see it, so there is a record with animal control that this dog is constantly out and about.

You will never be friendly with these neighbors if you do this --just be aware of that.

Alternatively you could get several other neighbors who like you are upset and all go together to these neighbors and tell (not ask, tell) them to keep their dog at home. It would have much, much more impact if three or four different neighbors turn up to complain as a group than if you alone are always complaining. And again, take a copy of that leash law with you to give them.

If not, you could try talking to them. Maybe other neighbors could join with you. If all else fails, most states have dog leash laws. You can not just let your dog out to roam and poop anywhere it pleases! You may have to call in a complaint! It is extremely rude to allow this to continue. They should be ashamed of themselves!
