Iron on Transfers

My daughter has gotten into making her own shirts. The transfers in these craft stores are just difficult to use. It is like they don't come off to apply to the shirt no matter how much we iron . Is there something we are missing in this process ? We have bought the glue that helps seal edges if they come off or whatever. The only think I can think of is they do ask you to prewash shirt first and then do it, we have not done that. She just wants to apply it as soon as we get home. Any thoughts......

* I believe that we are reading the instructions throughly..... we do remove the clear coat.... IDK... this is just too easy that it is hard LOL

What can I do next?

I just recently go some transfers from Walmart and it took a bit to get them right. Do use a hot iron but have a cloth or paper towel between the iron and the fabric. Put some weight like pressing and counting to 10 or something to let the glue melt. And then iron it on the other side as it says and that will make it stick better.

Good luck and patience and it will work.

Well you probably should wash and dry the shirt first, but I don't think that would have anything to do with the actual transfer. It might, however, shrink the shirt and possibly distort the image or whatever. I always just think it's a good idea to wash first.

It's been a long time since I've done the iron on stuff, but is there a backing or something you are supposed to remove first? Are you reading all the instructions carefully? Is any of it coming off, or is it sort of coming off but not all the way?

I'd make sure you follow the directions exactly, I guess I don't have much other advice.

I don't have much faith in those iron transfers. I bought a few with the intention of making my daughter some shirts and went through (ruined!) 3 plain t-shirts trying to get it right. I followed the directions EXACTLY, too!

My only thought is maybe the iron is not hot enough or you're not leaving it on long enough.

Good luck!

I have the same problems. I think it probably is that the iron isn't hot enough. The ones that my mom does come out so much better than mine. Also, I think maybe the white ones that are supposed to be for dark fabrics (as opposed to the clear ones for light fabrics) adhere a little better.

Depending on what sort of designs your daughter uses, you could also try making your own stencils and then painting the shirts with fabric paint. I'm sure you can find instructions online or on Pinterest.
