Ok. I have an Iron that my mom gave me. She had hard water, so it has a serious case of lime scale!!! I have pieces that come out as I iron. I looked at walmart, but could not find anything that would clean it. It seams to be the worst in the steam holes. What do you use???

What can I do next?

Have you tried CLR or Lime Away? I know that vinegar is a good cleaner, try looking up vinegar uses & see if there are any suggestions on cleaning irons if the CLR or Lime Away doesn't. Good luck!

For the surface of the iron, I use Fautless Hot Iron Cleaner. You find it at Walmart. For the inner, I'd just go w/ what the pp have said. Then, from here on out, I'd use distilled water for your iron :)

Hi M.,
I remember the days when I had to clean my irons....I would use vinegar and water- it may take more than one treatment depending on the amount of cleaning. Just pour the vinegar and water (about 34/1/4 mixture-) the most being the vinegar and run thru the steam cycle- it will really smell and stink up the house- so if you can do it on the porch or in the garage the better- then run two or three just clear water to help remove any remaining debrie or until there is no smell. It takes some time but it is cheaper than buying the "steam iron cleaner".......
good luck and blessings

honestly, you can get a decent iron for 10 or 12 dollars...you;ll spend that much in cleaning supplies and headache trying to get the lime out of the old one...my suggestion is to purchase a new one...

Good luck and best wishes... ;-)

Plane white vingar will work for removing the minerals from inside with out hurting the iron. Fill iron and heat on high let set over night. Empty and fill with water empty and refill several times.

White Vinegar. Use it in the water receptacle instead of water. DO NOT iron any clothes, but put it on high and steam and iron a towel. The vinegar will disolve the limescale.

Use vinegar. Empty the water out and fill the water chamber with vinegar and let it heat up then iron something that you wouldn't mind smelling like vinegar, I do all my cup towels. After you have done, rinse it out again and from then on never use anything in it except distilled water.

fill the iron with vinegar several times and let it sit so it can dissolve all of the lime deposit, empty it out then repeat, this should solve your problem.

M.,
Vinegar is the only safe thing that removes hard water. Pour it into the iron and heat it up for a while. Drain, then do it again. Smake sure it is on steam so the vent holes clear out too.
This can also be used around sink handles, coffee pots, showers, refridgerater "water in the door" spikets. Anything. Just let is soak and do it's work!
I will be saying prayers for your little one. It sounds like a challenge, but God entrusted you with this little one because he trusted only you with her special needs.
God bless,
D.

Plain ol' vinegar! Let the bottom of the iron soak in enough vinegar (maybe a 9x13 baking dish)to just cover the "iron" part. Soak for up to 2 hours, rinse (just the bottom) and dry. Also, pour vinegar through the iron (steamer) and heat up for about 10 minutes and dump the residue.

Blessings to you and your family!

Good for you to save something from the landfill!

Fill with white vinegar and steam it out on an old towel. Repeat until clean. Then use clean water to do the same thing a couple of times to ensure it is thoroughly rinsed. Yan can do this occasionally to maintain.
