Introducing Sippy Cup

I'm starting to introduce my little guy to the sippy cup, and he has NO INTEREST whatsoever. He also is not a fan of juice or water (even in a bottle), so he definitely won't take it in a sippy cup anyway. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much! We've been putting the sippy cup on his high chair tray during mealtimes, and he likes to chew on the spout in between bites of food (we also drink water while we're feeding him, making a big deal about how fun it is to drink.) He usually winds up throwing it halfway through his meal, but he's definitely *aware* of it now.

I used juice. My two only received formula out of the bottle. It made the sippy cup a treat to use. I started the cup at 6 mos. and by the time they were 1 yr. we had no problem weening them of the bottle. Good luck!!!

I begin offering at the same time I start solid foods. I just have it on the tray and available to play with and test out while sitting at the table. Sometimes taking spillproof pieces out to show them what is in it and give them the idea that it is for drinking helps. Then you can replace the spillproof pieces because they understand to suck. Don't expect the first sippy you have chosen will work for your child. They all work differently and are shaped differently - just like with bottles. Different styles work better for different babies. My kids have all liked the Playtex line for sippies.

Try the Nuby brand of sippy cups. My son started using them at 6 months. The others were too hard to suck and get anything out of. They have a silicone spout instead of hard plastic and are much easier to use. They are sold in packages of 2 at CVS, Babies R Us ect. Good luck

Hi D.,
Just be patient and keep on trying. My lil man uses Gerber, Playtex and some cheapo snap on lid kind for water. I guess I am one of the lucky ones because we gave it to him at 3 months old just to see what he would do and to our surprise he drank from it immediately?! He also held it on his own, it had handles... so I think it just depends on when he is ready! Be consistent and be patient and good luck!

Hi D.,
My daughter was the same way. She LOVED her bottle. I tried the NUBY sippy cups for her. (soft silicone top) That was the only one she would take. (And believe me, it took about a week for her to really take to it.) Give it a try! And best of luck to you.

It's all a matter of letting your son get used to it. What I did with my kids were to actually take a couple of sips out of the cup in front of them to let them see exactly how it's done. (Most kids want to do what mommy and daddy do anyway) And then after that, ALWAYS have it around him, even if he keeps throwing it or whatever, constantly offer it to him and if he doesn't want it, just put it down next to him. Definitely keep up with giving him water at first, don't put the formula or whatever you use in it. Then you can change to milk. My kids always had water or juice in sippy cups because I breastfed, then later on, once they were getting milk, is when I changed it. Honestly, just keep it around him all the time.

My little guy was picky about his sippy. We tried Avent and some other brand before a friend recommended Nubby and he loves those. He drinks anything but milk from it lol He wants his milk from a bottle still. But the sippy is nice when we go out to eat or to familys houses because he can feed himself and drink from the sippy there. They sell the Nubby at walmart :)

Hi D.,
I've tried 3 different kinds of sippy cups and I'm just convinced my little man (who is 9 months) just isn't interested yet. I give him the drip-proof kinds to play with in his high chair and he does just that plays and drops it on the floor. He puts the nipple part up to his mouth but he doesn't seem to be able to suck any liquid out.

Maybe try putting formula/breast milk in first.

I'd just keep trying.

Good luck!

I used the Nuby silcone top ones too and it was actually much closer to a bottle than the others but that wasn't the first one my son choose because they were a little big. He had no luck whatsoever with the ones with the drip proof inserts. It was the take and toss lids attached to the take and toss snack cup that worked for him. We let him play with those in his high chair first. I think I also opened the holes on the lid a little with a knife.

Take the darn 'spill-proof' stopper out of of the sippy cup.

Babies have to suck so hard to get the drink out, they get defeated and lose interest. I found that almost instantly after I took the stoppers out, my daughter had no problems using a sippy cup. You can eventually work the stopper back in once he gets a used to the cups and a little older. The drink isn't going to spill much out of the spout without the stopper anyway, unless you have a 'painter.' My daughter liked to turn her sippy cup upside down and 'paint' with the juice or water or milk that came out, but even that was only a few drops.

i recommend the NUBY if you are trying to switch for his milk... but if you just want him to get try a sippy in general... i've found that if you just leave out a sippy of water, they will inspect it at their own pace, and drink from it. it's good too because that gets them drinking water as opposed to juice all the time. My girls both loved the Playtex ones with the handles.

Go to a Wall-Mart store in the Juice Isle they have "Tummy Ticklers". They are reusable abosolutly leak free sippy bottles. They come topped w/various characters like Elmo, Curious George, Dora, Dinosauress from The Land Before Time, Toy story etc. They are packaged in 3s and filled with 100% apple juice. I have about 9 and my son Sage loves them!
