I was wondering if anyone has any resources for getting Similac Alimentum? My daughter has been on it since birth and it was always covered until now. We switched insurance companies in January and they dont cover it (although I was told by 3 people before joining that they did).

In any case, I didnt know if there were any moms who may have any unopened left over cans that they wouldnt mind donating or accepting a small payment? The price varies from $28.00-30.00/can and we use 9-10 cans a month. Just looking for a way to defray the cost.

Any info/advice would be most appreciated! Thank you!

Your Pediatrician may be able to get the insurance co. to cover it. They will do this with certain drugs that aren't covered. Did you get names of people who told you it was covered? Ask to speak to a supervisor at the Ins. Co. regarding your decision to change plans based on their misrepresentation.
Ask to speak to the sup's manager if you get nowhere.

If you have a low to moderate income you could write to the company and ask if they have a program that will help defray costs. Drug companies have such programs.

After reading Karen's answer I agree that it's possible to have alimentum covered by your doctor's diagnosis. I've had other things covered once the correct diagnosis was given to the insurance company. Your doctor needs to state that having this formula is necessary because of a medical condition. An example of one such condition is lactose intolerance.

To be sure what your insurance company considers a medical condition that they will cover, talk with them before talking with the doctor.

In order to get WIC coverage one has to have a limited income. You can find the income requirement on the Internet or by calling the local office for Women, Infants, and Children.

My son was on Alimentum too. Apply for WIC. They give it to you so long as you have a pediatrician's prescription written out in the child's name saying that he HAS to have it specifically. Ask the pediatrician for a "WIC Form."

Unless you can find a killer deal online + shipping.... your best bet is WIC or get coupons from Ebay: http://bit.ly/cn9EM7.

Hope this helps!

ps. yes.. a diagnosis of "failure to thrive" by your PED. will push the insurance company to cover.
