Initial ENT Visit - What to Expect?

We are taking my son to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist to rule out any vocal chord issues in his speech delay. Does anyone have an experience with this kind of examination? I am wondering what to expect. He has already had a hearing exam with an audiologist, so I expect the ENT to focus on his mouth and throat. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I would like to ask what kind of symptoms he is showing for you to be concerned specifically about vocal cord issues. Does he have hypernasal or hyponasal speech? Ask about deep nasal pharnx and submucous cleft palate. DO NOT accept that just because he doesn't have a bifid uvula, that he can't have a submucous cleft.

Also find out if he has a short soft palate. That's important to know. I highly recommend getting a nasal endoscopy done. That makes it so you all can see his structure - otherwise, it's just guesswork, and you need to know difinitively if there are structural issues causing this.

Just an FYI-My youngest that has had speech problems had a hearing exam with an audiologist and everything was ok there but when he saw the ENT they figured out that it was his ears were blocked and he needed tubes.

They'll probably start the exam like your regular doctor does, but they're more thorough. They love pulling out the camera to check the problem area...can't say I blame them. Your son can expect some discomfort. As a parent I always think it's our right to draw the line with a medical procedure. I'd definitely promise some sort of treat afterwards for your son so he has something to look forward to after the appt. An ice cream treat might feel good if his throat gets poked at :)

when i was younger my doc was concerned because my tonsils are huugge he sent me to an ent.. they check everything basically the same as a normal doc would (this was years ago so dont hold me to it) but the one thing i remember was them putting one of those realy tiny camera things on the wire (i forget what theyre called) up in through my nose and all the way into my sinuses and down my throat - not fun
