We are planning a trip to Mexico in February with my entire family (Aunts, Uncles, Grandma, etc.). We have 3 children ages 8, 5, and a 1 year old. Does anyone have advice for me on traveling to Puerto Vallarta with young children? We are staying in an all-inclusive resort, so I won't have to worry about feeding the children. I'd appreciate any words of wisdom.

I have been to tujuana a few times when I lived in CA, I would suggest planning an activity or two around the kids. Something they would like and also the rest of the family attending this trip can do to. Get their input on some ideas they might be interested in. I think that will make it more fun for them.

Wow, sounds fun. Plus you have grandma to help!! I am jealous. If the kids are not picky, the hotel will probably do what they can to accommodate the little one with steam veggies and non-spicy stuff. I would stay away from raw anything. They all say the water is safe. My daughter just got back from an all inclusive resort in Cancun with raging diarrhea. She is definitely more sensitive than most, but so are little kids. There have been issues with raw tomatoes and jalepenos coming from from Mexico, so you just have to be cautious even about teeth brushing. Usually you can find out easily if the faucet water is okay. When I stayed at a dive resort in Belize, they gave bottled water even for tooth brushing. Resorts survive on their reputations, so they should be up front about it all.

Don't drink the water, only drink bottled water, even ice cubes can be dangerous. Be very careful especially with the children as their systems are so much more sensitive than ours. Also check with your doctor and see if there are any vacinations that your children should have before traveling to Mexico. And I would see about getting a sedative for the little one, just in case he doesn't do well on the flight. Your doctor can help you with that as well. But have a terrific time and enjoy your vacation.

I traveled to Cancun one time and picked up information that was very helpful. What stood out the most was not ordering ice in your drinks since the ice is made with their water and it can have contaminates that can make adults sick but could be very harmful to children. Especially your one year old. Request bottled water if you are out and even though the hotel said they have a purification system someone else there suggested we pick up bottled water to brush our teeth with or to drink in our room.

You as well as all your children need passports. Other then that because it is an all-inclusive just always drink bottled water and try not to eat off the property.

JUST ENJOY YOUR TRIP AND DON'T WORRY SO MUCH. MEXICO IS JUST LIKE AMERICA IN THAT THERE ARE CHILDREN BORN THERE EVERY SECOND - AND THEY SURVIVE :) MY HUSBAND IS MEXICAN AND I TRAVELED TO VISIT HIS FAMILY WHEN MY FIRST SON WAS 3 MONTHS OLD. WE STAYED IN OUR HOME WE HAVE THERE; AND IT IS ANYTHING BUT RESORT LIKE. IT IS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF SUGAR CANE FIELDS, THERE IS NO RUNNING WATER; YOU SHOWER WITH BUCKETS OF WATER FROM THE WELL AFTER HEATING IT UP ON AN OPEN FIRE. THEY DON'T HAVE ANY LUXURIES LIKE WE HAVE HERE, BUT LIFE IS VERY SIMPLE. WE HAD A GREAT TRIP; RELAXED WITH GREAT FOOD (HIS MOM COOKED NONSTOP)! WE PLAN ON RETURNING IN THE WINTER WITH OUR NOW TWO YEAR OLD AND OUR NEWEST ADDITION WHO IS ALMOST FOUR MONTHS. BUT I SAID THAT TO SAY THIS ;THINGS WERE NOT ANY DIFFERENT IN CARING FOR CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY IF YOUR GOING TO BE IN A RESORT. IT WILL BE GREAT - HAVE A WONDERFUL TRIP!!!

Hi K. -

My advice is just to call the resort and see what kind of food they offer. When my husband and I stayed at an all-inclusive in Mexico the food was all, well, "Mexican",(go figure!) and very little "chicken nuggets and fries" to be found. So for very small children, you may want to check ahead and see if you wil need to pack some lunchables or something similar for your littlest one.

Have a great trip!

have them wear slip on shoes(mine wore Crocs)makes going thru security much easier!
Make sure to pack some dramamine-I used original ,not nondrowsy, we had no problems with air sickness.

Use a cheap umbrella stoller that folds easily since it too has to go through the x-ray machine at security. We travel quite a bit and our expensive stroller got beat up and parts broke when checked at the gate and put under the plane. Other than that, keep it simple. Not much is going to entertain a one year old for a long period of time so books, crayons, snacks and hopefully naptime are your only hope. A portable DVD player worked great for our three year old. Good luck!
