About the baby food available in Switzerland: You will find that everything is available in Switzerland, including a wide selection of baby food. If you're used to the brands here, they are also available. You most certainly don't have to carry baby food jars with you. Absolutely everything is available in Switzerland, just as in all of Europe. You will be pleasantly surprised at how progressive Europe is!

I was born in Europe, but have lived 50 years of my life in the USA. I have travelled extensively in all of Europe, and go back every year, and spend three months there. You have nothing to worry about. Switzerland is a delight!

Hi A.,
My boys are now 10 & 7. We have been traveling with them since they are 2 month old, all over Europe and Mexico. Europe is filled with great grocery stores and you will find more organic food overall and a great selection of baby food. They may have different combinations and even different types of food available. I do not think you will have any issues. My kids fell in love with mini-yogurts and other products I just can't find here. Enjoy your trip, you are raising a great traveler and explorer!

The best bet would be to make your own there. Just throw whatever you want to feed her in a blender with some water.

GL :) and have fun.

Hi, I'm afraid I can't tell you anything specific about Switzerland but both my children went through babyhood in the Czech Republic a couple years ago, where we had an organic Austrian brand of babyfood called "Hipp" available to us. There were also Heinz and Nestle products on the market as well as local ones, and the Czech Republic is far less developed than Switzerland, so I'm sure you'll have absolutely no problem. I'd bring only enough food for the plane ride and a day or so. In fact, the airline might even provide some for the journey. Good luck!

TAG! (German for Hello!), A....
I find traveling the perfect opportunity to introduce Brianna, 18m, to new foods. She has been on 38+ flights since she was 3 weeks new. For instance, if it's a buffet, you can get just a teaspoon of a bunch of different foods, as to not be wasteful. Or, if you are out and about, either at someone's home, cooking for yourself or at a restaurant, order for you and your husband as usual, and have your daughter try some of yours. Of course, stay away from things that might not be a good idea, for instance *I* don't eat reef fish (high chance of bacteria for us grown-ups, too), so certainly didn't get any (Conch in the islands) for Brianna.

Don't waste your energy carry baby food! In many ways, the Swiss are much more sensible than us closed-minded Americans, so it'll be just fine. And, you can always purchase baby food there. When we travel, we just bring enough diapers and food for Brianna for the trip plus one day, and by that time we can get to a store.

Hope that helps. Feel free to e me directly with any more specific questions. ButterflyLindaMarie at yahoo dot com. And Bon Voyage!
smiles,
L., Brianna, baby (& Chewie!)

Dear A.P.,

Beechnut baby food is actually owned by the Swiss company Hero.

Gerber is owned by Nestle, also a Swiss company.

Just because these Swiss companies sell baby food in the USA doesn’t mean that these brands will be on the shelf, but it is a good sign.

Do you have any friends there you will be visiting? They might have first hand info about what’s available at their grocery store.

Or, you might consider sending an email to customer services departments at Nestle and Beechnut asking them directly.

Japanese Baby Food, Formula and Diapers

When I was in Japan last year, I had no problem finding baby food for by baby. They did have more food combinations we aren’t used to seeing here for babies like fish with rice and onions, but I was also able to find chicken and vegetables, too.

Remember, just because the food combination isn’t one we’re used to seeing doesn’t mean that it’s unhealthy. Your baby is at an age where she is exploring new tastes - she just might like something different!

Here’s another tip: I brought along a Magic Bullet food processor (we had an apartment for the five weeks we were there) and made a lot of baby food while we were there. You may need an adapter if you are using American appliances. OR, you can get a non-electric food grinder if you plan on eating at restaurants or don’t want to have the hassle of using an adapter - these can be bought at Amazon.com or Babies R Us.

You can also stick with soft foods like soup or oatmeal, mashed bananas, mashed peas, potatoes, bread soaked in juice or milk, yogurt. Canned veggies are also pretty soft. Foods mash better if they’re warmed or if they’re soaked in a liquid and with a little work, a fork can be an effective a mashing tool.

Best wishes!

Years ago I had my first baby in Germany. I used the "on the economy" baby foods( the stuff in the local stores& and carrot juice as my little one was/is totally lactose intolerant). She thrived. While I cannot give you brand names(they have many of the ones we have here also but they are very expensive...) Look up some veggies and fruits in german(they speak it there) , so that you can read the ingredients of the jars. ENJOY your trip. BTW my best friend of over 45 years there all the time.

Babies R Us carries a very small baby food grinder. It is a mini food grinder that could be kept in a diaper bag so that you could grind the food where ever you eat. I don't have one but have always wanted to get one. Have fun on vacation!!

I don't know about Switzerland specifically, but food for babies in Europe is superior and awesome, and usually in jars. I've been to Paris, Germany and Italy since having a baby, and everywhere I went there were fabulous jars of food for babies in all the markets. Have fun in Switzerland, Lucky!!!
