Since my husband is a few years away from retirement, we are starting to think about where we'd like to live in the future. We are looking for a good area (very low crime) with a moderate climate (no extreme heat or harsh winters) and good schools (since our daughter will only be around 8 or 9 years old when my husband retires). We would live to live in a family-friendly suburban area near a city. A few people we know have relocated to the Charlotte, NC area and seem to like it there. Is anyone living in the Charlotte, NC area, or have you heard anything about it from others? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

We lived in Charlotte and loved it. We moved to Texas in 1989 due to husbands job and we LOVE Texas. It will be difficult to pry me from Texas!!

We would certainly consider going back to Charlotte. We have been back to visit friends, etc and it is still a beautiful city, much larger than when we were there.

We lived in the Matthews burb off Providence Road in the Raintree Country Club area.

At the time, we did not have our daughter so I don't know full details about schools.

Our daughter is seriously considering the East Coast schools for college beginning in 2013... Duke in Durham (We LOVE this city as well... Hubby is Duke BLue Devil), Elon and Villinova. For some reason, she is drawn to that area. We'll probably end up with a condo or 2nd home in the area if she chooses to go to college in the East.

I lived there for 2 years and was soooo excited to get away! The winters were awful! It snowed then partially melted then froze...iMO Fort Mill which is SC or Indian Trail would be much nicer areas then Charlotte.

I was born in Hickory, NC and - for us - Charlotte was the big city. :)

IMHO North Carolinians are wonderful . . . western North Carolina is not as temperate as eastern Tennessee, but still better than NY of course. It tends to get fairly hot through the summers. The good news is that, in Charlotte, you are an easy drive to the mountains. And probably 4 - 5 hours from the coast.

I have a childhood friend who works in the "research triangle" area of North Carolina, which is closer to Raleigh. There are many northerners there from what I understand.

I hope to get back to North Carolina someday, if even just on a part-time basis. Good luck and I hope it works out for you all!
