Infant Reflux? - Pearland,TX

My 3 month old daughter is exhibiting signs of reflux and I'm trying to figure out if that is what is wrong. She has slept through the night for some time, up until the last couple nights. When we try to lay her down she screams as though she is in agonizing pain. Even if she is asleep, she still wakes up when we lay her in her crib. She also wakes up crying like something hurts every 3 hours. If your baby has reflux, what are the symptoms?

what you said totally describes reflux. Try laying her in a car seat while she sleeps. If she is bottle fed, feed her sitting upright as much as you can. They also have baby zantac that helps. Does she also spit up quite a bit? my son did those things and he not only had reflux but was allergic to the milk based formulas. Good luck!

My daughter had reflux and the doctor suggested putting her to sleep at an incline. It helped a lot.

If she is spitting up alot along with the crying that might be reflux. If there is no spitting up ,might be an ear infection.
Either way talk to her DR.
With my first baby , I had to push her Dr. for reflux medicine. He said she couldn't have reflux b/c she was still gaining weight.
Whatever you do, remember you know what is best for your baby girl and don't doubt yourself!

Have you checked with your pedi? What is their recommendation or thoughts? If it is a type of infant reflux, ask them if you can give her a small dose of Pepcid or something similar. Please do not give her this wo checking with the pedi office first.

My daughter had reflux until she was approx 13 mo. old. Her primary symptom was an overabundance of spit-up- after she fed a good amount of it came right back up- and she was diagnosed early on. Sleeping through the night didn't come about until her 7th month, even with medication, so I can't say that her reflux was keeping her up. If your daughter has reflux, you'll see the signs during the day as well as at night.

Your best bet is to discuss the problem with her doctor. Maybe a simple change in diet/formula can take care of the problem. If it's something a bit more complicated, then you want to address the issue right away.

Good luck!

Our reflux was different and entirely focused around feedings. She would eat about an ounce and then scream and scream and scream and not eat any more. Since she was getting so little food at a time, she would want to eat every hour, but each feeding was an agonizing screamfest.

The "even if she is asleep, she still wakes up when we lay her down" sounds more like a sleep issue. At various development points, kiddos go from great sleepers to having issues. Just when you think you are going to lose it, they go back to their old routine.

Try to be patient, but try to stick to a routine as much as possible. We would/will go in to change a a dirty diaper or when she was that young, for a feeding. Otherwise, we set a time limit -- if she continues to cry for 5 minutes, we'll check on her. 90% of the time she would stop crying after 2-3 minutes.

arching the back, sticking out the toungue alot, crying when laid down >>> I would talk to you dr to get her reflux meds and I have a wedge under my boys matress to elevate his head you can also use blankets or towels under the matress or platforms to elevate one side of the bed. yes they do sqirm around and stuf and end up horizontal and down away from the top of the bed but it helps. All 3 of my boys had it. the first I had no clue and ended up cosleeping the second he slept in his swing but this one seems to be sleeping well with the wedge. I believe the ssecond one sleeping in his swing was just my insecurities cause I never did it with my first.... I really would get her one meds cause it is painful and she does not need to be in pain. it has halp my boys alot and it can cause damamge to the esphagus(sp)to if not treated.

Is she spitting up a lot? I don't know what other signs there may be but my son slept in his car seat in his crib for a month because it hurt him to lay down and he would spit up a lot! Also, some kids will sleep in their swing since it's elevated too. Hope you get some answers. If brestfed, could be something you are eating that is causing pain. Or if on formula, she may not do well with a milk based one.

My daughter is going through the same symptoms, she is now 5 months. She was breastfeed first, we tried adding rice cereal it worked for a while. Then we changed her to Enfamil Lipil AR, it worked for a while; now she is on Enfamil Gentlease and it works very well.

My daughter did exactly that. The scary part was at 4 months when she would basically stop breathing in her sleep. The Dr gave her reflux meds and had me tilt her mattress up and it was all over by 7 mths when she was mostly upright.

My son had reflux but did not have the all the normal symptoms. He would spit up but then would swallow it so I never saw any spit up. He did often choke and would pull back and cry when he was nursing (which are signs of reflux). At night when he would sleep he would also choke which was really scary. At 2 months my doctor perscribed prevacid whish helped so much. It would be somewhat weird for this to start now at 3 months. So I am thinking it is not the reflux that is making her cry in her sleep (just my opinion). It could be a growth spurt. I have noticed that my kids cry a lot and wake up a lot during that time. I also would not rule out an ear infection.
Whatever it is,if she is crying like she is in that much agony, then I would take her to the doc to get her checked out.

Hi S.,
My oldest son was a "happy spitter." He would spit up after every meal, but was otherwise fine. He didn't fuss during the night or scream out in pain, but he did have problems gaining weight. I would definitely talk to your doctor about your daughter's symptoms, and I don't think I would even wait until her 4 month check up to do it. I was hesitant to put my son on any reflux medication because he wasn't screaming or fussy and I thought all babies spit up. So at first we tried propping his head with a crib wedge under his mattress and I would leave him upright for at least 20 minutes after every meal (put him in his swing or bouncy seat). We also thicken his bottles with cereal on the doctor's advice. Because I was nursing I had to pump a bottle then add the cereal. In the end our pedi put him Axid at 4 months old, and it worked great. He gained 5 pounds very quickly. He switched to Prevacid a couple months later. Most babies do outgrow the reflux when they begin eating solids on a regular basis and can sit up independently.

Sounds like an ear infection. Does she cry at diaper changes? When you lay a baby down with an ear infection the pressure makes them cry louder. I would suggest calling your doctor this morning and talk to her or your nurse. They can help you decide if you need to come in.

Not to scare you but to inform you... My son was a preemie born at 31 weeks. At his due date, or at two months old his demeanor changed. He went from a happy baby to a sceaming banchie. He would girl into a ball and SCREAM, so you know he was in pain. He also began more vomitiing. I demanded zantac for reflux and I was told we had to do a swallow study to rul eout the reflux first. well turned out my son had a malrotated large intestine (They were in the wrong place) and he was developing a blockage. Of course this is rare. I just want you to know, in case... you are that 1 in however many. Also if your child ever vomits bright green material, go to the er-they have a blockage.

So again, fyi. I hope it is just reflux. :)

It sounds like what my daughters went through. There is a kind of Gerd called silent reflux. http://infantrefluxdisease.com/infant_acid_reflux/silent-...

Clearly it's not silent (I say this in jest simply because I know how hard it is to have a baby crying in pain.) This just means that it's not obvious reflux because there's no spitting up.

Some drs don't prescribe meds for silent reflux because the baby is not loosing any weight. However, when the baby is having trouble sleeping and is in obvious pain all the time, meds may be the best thing. Long term Reglan causes bad issues so they have been prescribing Previcid instead. I had trouble administering the Prevacid tablets, though. Reglan and Zantac is what I gave my first two, and Prevacid to my third. They used to suggest adding cereal to the bottle, but they no longer do that (probably because early cereal has been linked to diabetes.) Instead they just say to feed often and in small amounts, and have her sit in the swing or bouncy seat after eating instead of laying her down flat. If you don't want her to get used to sleeping somewhere besides the bed, you can put a pillow or something under her mattress to raise one end, or raise the end of the crib.

The good news is that USUALLY babies outgrow it. For mine, they didn't even need to increase dosages of meds as they grew.

Symptoms my girls had:
Acted hungry even after having eaten or acted hungry, tried to eat, and then pulled away.

Cried more then usual (colic is evening crying, but reflux causes the baby to cry many times or all the time during the day.)

Had trouble sleeping, often waking crying.

Did not want to lie flat.

Arched back during or after feedings.

They put their hands in their mouth a lot. That's a common feeding cue and when the tummy hurts, putting the hand in the mouth is a good indication that either the child is hungry, teething, OR has reflux.

I've had lots of experience with babies with reflux and what you described sounds like reflux. If it's bad reflux, the only thing that will help is medication.
Good luck,

My goddaughter was diagnosed with reflux about a month ago. She is 4mths. The only signs she really had was spitting up her food or whatever. She never showed any signs of discomfort and only woke up at night to eat. The doctor gave her some medicine and that worked for a little while then her formula was changed to Similac Advanced (Prosobee I believe) and that helped.

Our son had Acid Reflux and it was rough. I took him to the Dr and she explained what it was and what our options where. We decided to put him on Zantac (it was children). We felt that the medication was a good idea for us since there can be complications from the acid reflux.
It might be something else, like teething, ear infection...I would call the Dr and take her in to see what is going on.

My son had reflux for quite some time when he was an infant. I have severe acid reflux myself, and I know how painful it can be. There are different types/grades of acid reflux. My son had a problem keeping milk (breast milk, different types of formula, you name it.) down. It was to the point where he was losing weight. Our doctor prescribed Prevacid. It came in little tablets designed to melt in the mouth, but in our case, we were given a syringe and told to mix it with warm water then squirt it in his mouth. It worked wonders. I guess most babies will grow out of it. We only had to use it for a couple of months after we started treatment. I have a severe version of acid reflux where it comes up in my mouth, but I have found that avoiding trigger foods works wonders. When I am pregnant, I have to take Nexium to control it because the diet change/alteration doesn't work at all for me. Your pediatrician should be able to give you a handful of samples of children's Prevacid to try.
