Infant Gas - Breastfeeding - Giving up Milk

Hi ladies,

This is my second time around with the gassy infant. My daughter is 2 1/2 weeks old and is suffering from terrible gas pains. It is so sad. I have mylicon and gripe water - we massage her belly and exercise her legs etc. (These things worked with my son) ANYWAY... I gave up milk with my son and things seemed to get better... after I added it back in, things were still fine. I figured it was the high fiber cereal I had to give up when I gave up the milk because I didn't bring that back into my diet while breastfeeding. I haven't had any high fiber cereal this time around because I'm afraid of the gas problem and my daughter has it anyway. I'm back to taking milk out of my diet... I'm on day 3.

There is the back story - here are the questions...
1. How many days do I have to exclude it from my diet for it to stop affecting my little baby?
2. I've read that newborn's digestive tracts aren't fully matured at birth and the gas pains are a side effect of that - diet doesn't affect the milk. Is this true?

I feel so bad for this little baby - as soon as she passes her gas or burps or poops, she is perfectly fine but when her belly is so hard, she is just screaming in pain... It is heartbreaking - any help would be greatly appreciated. (Yes the mylicon is helping - it expedites the gas passing process I just feel like every feeding is excessive...) Doc said 3 times a day is fine and I'm feeding about 12-16 times a day!

Thank you ladies - you guys are great!

So What Happened?

Just went to mother baby assessment center (lactation consultants are there) and they went through my whole diet... dairy... gluten with me then watched my daughter feed. I didn't mention before what has been happening for a while - she chokes while feeding - and - I have a lot of milk. So - they gave me this info (link below) we'll see how that works! Thank you for your help!

I was worried about similar problems with my daughter. She was very gassy and her stools were loose, foamy and green. The lactation cnosultant told me to eliminate milk/dairy. That didn't seem to have any effect for her. I talked to my pediatrician about it and he said the actual percentage of babies affected by dairy in the mother's diet is actually incredibly small, but it tends to get over-emphasized by lactation consultants. Not to say that it doesn't happen, but this particular LC suggested it to the majority of the moms in our meeting. My pediatrician said the green color was more from fruits, specifically grapes/grape juice in my diet, but it was nothing to worry about. We basically just had to go with the mylicon, baby massage and cycling of her legs until she got a bit older and grew out of it.

First, congratulations on breastfeeding and I hope that you keep it up! I have breastfed all three of my children until they were around 15 - 18 months (each one weened at different times / I followed their lead). One of my children had very similiar symptoms. I would first contact your pediatrician for advice and to insure your baby is happy and healthy. Next, cut dairy and spicy foods out of your diet - also watch for lettuce, celery, spinach, etc. (google "gassy / spicy foods" for more). Also, my babies reacted when I ate spaghetti sauce. My doctor informed me it takes approx. two weeks (up to a month) to clear your system. I have received the same information from LLL. For my second child (the one with similiar symptoms), I stopped dairy for the entire time I was breastfeeding him. He ended up being lactose sensitive for the first year of his life and eventually he out grew it (he's 4 1/2 now). I know this sounds a bit much, but it is worth it in the end. Just remember this is temporary and your baby will be happy and healthy. Also, you mentioned you are breastfeeding 12 - 16 times a day and that is correct!! Keep it up! Please check out LLL (La Leche League) or other breastfeeding websites on google - the support is there. Also, check out acupuncture wellness food websites, they can guide you with healthy choices for you. Good luck and take care - this time will go by quickly and enjoy bicycling her legs (sing songs too)!

this will sound weird, but my pediatrician had me eat greek yogurt every day and it worked really well.

1. I thought it was 2 weeks to fully clear from your system....but I can be wrong
2. I have heard that too, that is also the main reason for reflux, but diet still affects your milk you might have to stay away from all kinds of gassy foods

I dont think that three times a day is enough at all for a child your age!!! mabye your dr. does not know about nursing, some just dont. I would contact your LLL or a LAC maybe it is a latch problem and she is taking in too much air that can also be a problem. you say you are doing baby massage? bc there is this stroke that helps w/ gas you should deff look that up bc that might help you right there. good luck, noone wants to see there poor baby in pain! xoxoxo
