Infant Daughter Has a Cyst on Her Chest?

My 3.5 month old daughter has what feels like a cyst, the size of a small pea on her chest, under her nipple.

I just noticed it yesterday, it doesn't seem to bother her when I touch it. We have an appointment tomorrow morning with the pediatrician to check it out, but I'm wondering first if anyone has experience with this or has any ideas as to what it might be and if it needs treatment.

I read online that it could be a calcification and just go away but to watch its size over time. One friend said her son had one and it went away in a month.

What can I do next?

It really sounds like you're talking about milk ducts. When baby girls are born most of them have swollen boobs and swollen "hoo ha's" because of the hormones coming from their momma's. It's pretty normal and will go away on it's own. All three of my neices had this. It's good you're going to get it checked out to be sure it's nothing to worry about. Here is a website I Found for ya to read, I hope this helps

When she was six months old, my daughter had a cyst-like lump near one of her nipples as well which had me a little worried. I called the on-call nurse who first asked if the bump looked red, inflamed or infected and also asked if there was any kind of discharge from the nipple. Since there was nothing except the lump, the nurse replied that they are very common in babies, usually the result of hormones coursing through their little bodies.

We were preparing for a week-long trip so I was extra concerned because I didn't have time to take my daughter in to see her pediatrician before our departure. The nurse told me that the lump would most probably go away and in the meantime, I should not do anything with it. She said that if I still noticed the lump in a month, it wouldn't hurt to have the pediatrician take a look.

About three weeks later, I had to take my daughter in to the clinic for a different reason so the doctor checked out the lump and corroborated the nurse's diagnosis. It is now several weeks later and I haven't noticed the lump again -- I think it's gone... but I'll probably check in the morning, just to be sure.

For me, I felt better after the pediatrician saw/felt the lump in person... so hopefully you have a similar experience tomorrow!

Hey TJ - it's T.....
My son had the same thing when he was little and it totally didn't bother him, but he was six months before it went away. My midwife said that it was due to my breastfeeding him and the increase in hormones that he was getting from me. The bump was hard and pea sized and right next to his nipple. It did go away even though I was still breastfeeding him. Good Luck!

Hi -

My 17 month old daughter had this as an infant and our pediatrician took a look. It is common in girls to get these as infants. Sometimes they'll even have a little milk come out of their nipples. It's normal and goes away within a a few weeks usually. Still always good to get it checked for your knowledge and peace of mind.

My daughter had it, and they where going to remove it, but she got sick the day of surgery. She is now 11 and doing great. It does not bother her at all.

My first daughter had one on her chest, but it was kitty corner to her nipple, almost to her collar bone. It freaked me out, but her doctor said it was called a "breast bud". It's just a hormonal thing that can happen to baby girls. It went away with no problem just like the Dr. said, within a couple weeks I think. No other problems since. Take care!

My daughter had this too, shortly after she was born and it lasted about 2 months or so. Our pediatrician said it had something to do with all the hormones from when she was born. She said it was totally normal, and she was right, it did go away!

It's probably a mammary gland, confused by hormones from your pregnancy or something. I think I've read about that in the past. Nothing to worry about, but I would always check any concerns with a doctor.

Hello,
I agree with all of the other ladies. It sounds like the hormones that kick in around 6 weeks - 3 months. They will gradually go away. This happens with boys too - not just girls. Let us know if it ends up being something different!!

My daughter was born with a cyst right between her eyebrows. It was so small at first that I didn't notice it, but it grew as she grew and ended up about pea sized as well. Long story short, she ended up having surgery when she was just under 1 year to remove it. I was nervous about it at first, but it ended up being no big deal at all. It was an outpatient procedure - we stayed at the hospital for about an hour after the surgery, then drove home (which took about another hour). By the time we were home, she was smiling and perfectly happy and fine.
Good luck and I hope all goes well for your little one!

Hello! Yes, my daughter had a small lump under her nipple when she was 7 months old and we wnt to the doc, he said it was just some breast tissue and that it would go away, and it did. No worries! its just another weird thing that babies rapidly growing bodies do. I guess sometimes the hormones and the tissues get reved up and start to grow breast tissue, but then it stops and goes away. I hope that this is what you have, because its no big deal, but I would have it checked out just to be sure. Have a beautiful Day! V.

When I was a child around age 8 I think, I had a lump under each nipple. As I remember, the doc said it could be something simple that would go away or it could have been early breast buds. I know your daughter is WAY to young to have that happening since she is an infant, but little things like that can pop up. I would guess that it could be even something to do with hormonal changes in her body adjusting to not being affected by your hormones also (does that make sense?). Good luck!

My daughter had something like this and I forget exactly what it was, but it had to do with too much estrogen levels during birth or something like that. It was no big deal and I think it just went away on it's own.
