Hi Mamas,
I no longer need my infant car seat but was wondering what I can do with it? I hear that most places like good will won't take them b/c they don't know if they are still safe. Can they be recycled? Any advice would be great. My infant car seat is in great condition. I didn't even use it long since my baby grew out of it pretty quickly. Thanks! :)

What can I do next?

Are you going to have more kids? If so, hold onto it:) If it is over five years old, I would just get rid of it. I don't know if you can actually give it to any organization but holding onto it for a friend who knows and trusts you might work out. Best wishes!!

I have donated several car seats to Houston Achievement Place and Texas Paralyzed Veterans. They don't have a problem taking them. I believe the Salvation Army will take it as well, but they have a 5 bag minimum to pickup. HAP and TPV don't have a minimum to pick up items.

there are freecycle groups out there that you could post it on & someone would surely need it. so many people can't afford to buy one.

Freecycle or Craigslist - list it for free and it will be gone in a matter of hours!

See if a local church knows of a family in need who could use it.

Call your local hospital to see if they have a hand-me-down program for mothers in need/crisis. Or a women's shelter. You can also try www.freecycle.com in your area. Someone may have a need for it. I've passed mine down to friends after my twins outgrew theirs, but these were other options in my area.

you can either donate it to a womans shelter or set it out on the front side walk with a free sign on it. assuming you live in the city.

You can take it to Baby Earth, they will recycle it. http://www.babyearth.com/renew

If no one will take it due to their policy related to "used" car seats then you can "trash recycle" them.
For curbside trash collection:
*Remove all straps and padding
* Use a permanent marker to label the seat with "Trash - Do not re-use"
* If possible, place the straps and padding into one trash can or bag, and the seat into another. This is to help prevent someone from taking your seat for reuse. (http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/apps/dep/solidwaste/col...)

Another thought is to call your local fire department and see if they can use the car seat for training purposes

Good luck!!

You could either take it to a a baby consignment store where they take them or you could try to sell it on craigslist.

Personally, i would never buy a used carseat, but lots of people do. As long as you know that it has never been in a car accident and know that it isn't expired, you can in good conscience give away or sell it in consignment or someplace like craigslist. I plan to do that with mine. I would absolutely destroy it if it had been in an accident. But since I would use it on my own child at this point, I feel no guilt about passing it on. (I just don't trust other people to do the same, is why I wouldn't buy used.) If you have a friend with a baby coming, that is a great way to get rid of it. I actually would buy a seat from a few trusted friends. You are right, I don't think goodwill will take them. But I work and shop at our local consignment sale where I live twice a year, and they sell dozens of used carseats. Someone will buy it.

my MIL had a great idea to give it to someone who was about to become a grandma for the first time. That infant carseat had probably only been used a half dozen times and was in excellant condition.

There's a kid to kid thrift store in the Woodlands. In the HEB shopping center on the corner of Kuykendahl & Woodlands Parkway. Also a great place to buy toys. ALSO ANOTHER great give-away is to a Women's shelter.

If you have a kid to kid place around you they will most likely buy them from you. Or you can always ask one of your friends if they know any one who is in need of one. Thats what I do with all my extra baby stuff that i dont keep or need. I pass it on to som eone who needs it more then me just throwing it away. Good luck.

You could try listing it on freecycle.org or craigslist for free. I am sure someone out there might need it, as long as you know it is in good shape and not been in an accident. Good luck

Just wanted to echo what others have said-
After we were in an accident I demolished the carseat straps before I put them out for trash and then I covered them with garbage bags. The covers I freecycled and some of them I sold on Craigslist ($100 for two of them, they were expensive carseats.)

I have purchased carseats at resale shops, received them on freecycle, and the last one I purchased on craigslist. My sister is using it now. Some consignment shops have them tested to ensure that they are sound (my sister said it looks for minute stress fractures ect.)

The resale shops around here sell them all the time, but I don't know if I've seen them at Goodwill.

What about posting it on Craigslist? It's free to use. I see ads all the time needing baby things under the "wanted" section. You can list it as "like new" or "very good, still useable condition". You could also state in the ad that it was hardly used. You could also post a photo of it so ppl would get a general idea of the condition. Hope this helps! Good luck.
