We are moving to KC area ( 75th & Antioch area) this summer (june 25) and I would like to find some activities for my boys ( 6 1/2 and soon-to-be 9 yo) I will be working and my husband will be looking for a job. I want them to be able to meet kids in the area and have fun this summer. This is the first time they have ever moved and I want to make it easier on them by having some choices of what to do. I basically am looking for Mon-fri daytime (several hours in a day). I could use info on several different price ranges. Thanks in advance for any info you may be able to share.

What can I do next?

Here is some info about the science summer camp at Union Station.

Science City Summer Camp
June 4 - August 3, 2007

Camp Description

Science City is a unique, hands-on science center for all ages. Children especially enjoy the discovery atmosphere and unexpected elements at Science City. The Science City Summer Program expands these experiences into activity-based learning, increasing the student’s curiosity. Students use each of the learning centers to explore the week’s theme.

Camp is a full-day experience from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early and Late Care is provided for participating children, with advance registration. Early Care begins at 7:30 a.m. and Late Care closes at 6 p.m.

Students are grouped according to age and put together with friends upon request. Experiences focus on active learning. Hands-on activities will be the norm for all sessions.

Each learning center is led by a certified teacher and college level assistants. Qualified high school students will assist them.

Learning Center Descriptions:

Life Science: Children investigate the week’s theme through the life sciences. Children will learn through microscopes, balances, experiments, live animals, and much more exciting “stuff”.

Physical Science: This center will focus on the physical sciences. Children will investigate the physical world using real scientific tools and techniques.

Active Expression: Children explore the week’s theme through drama, dance, music, and writing.

Fine Arts: Children delve into the week’s theme using the visual arts. The center will go beyond mere “arts and crafts”. Painting, sculpture, drawing, collages, and other art techniques and vocabulary will be taught.

Science City: Children participate in Science City’s specialized group programs related to the week’s themes, in addition to guided experiences within our science center’s exhibits.

H. - Welcome to KC! My kids are quite a bit younger than you, so I'm not real sure of what camps are offered. I can tell you that Johnson County has a lot of different activities all summer long. I'd check out the county website www.jocoks.com and see what they can point you towards. I'd also ask your Realtor if s/he has kids and what they participate in.

Years ago I took my kids to a theatre camp 4-5 years in a row. It wasn't cheap for 3 kids but it was so worth it. They take them for about 5 hours per day for 2 weeks and they prepare for a show the whole time. At the end the parents gather for a performance which they tape. I can't remember the name right off. But look in Grandview or South Kansas City. It may be on the border and I'm unsure of the address. My girls really loved these years spent there. It was tiring driving them there and I ended up on the road sometimes 3 hours per day because of constant road constructions and accidents. But what's 2 weeks out of our life for such wonderful experience?

@ 63rd and Antioch ( well, maybe more like 65th...) is Antioch Park. They do lots of stuff every summer so check out Johnson County Parks and Recreation and there will be a lot that is close. It has been several years since my boys were there, but it was quite reasonable at the time
