Hello moms,

My son is 13 months and from the books I've read and talking with other moms I gather now is the age when my son will need to see a dentist. (he's my first, so everything's new to me) The problem I'm having is that I can't find a dentist in the area that will see a child under 2. Do you all have any suggestions?
Thanks,
J.

I dated my dentist for years and still see and recommend him highly. He will see a child of any age and his hygenist LOVES to see kids that young just to warm them up to her. She feels if they visit and have fun before they ever get their teeth cleaned it makes for a much better time when they are three or four and she actually wants to get in their mouths. The dentists name is Tom O'Sullivan. His office is at College and Nall. ###-###-####. Ask to see Trisha (the hygenist). There are a couple of others there but Trisha is the BEST! She has tiny hands and my own visits are completely comfortable at all times. Their office will also gladly do "field trips" with a group of little ones and just let them ride the chair and play with the waterpic and give them free stuff. We did this and my daughter BEGS to go to the dentist.
If you see them, tell them C. said hey. (They won't treat you any better of anything....darn it)

We used Donna Thomas in Overland Park for a long time until our insurance changed....now we use Dr. Korsten in Lee's Summit. He is a great dentist and his staff is great as well. I would highly recommend either of them. I am not sure about the ages.....but, as a mom of four....unless there is a problem I didn't take my kids in until they were 2. If there aren't any problems then just keep up good with the brushing and no juice or milk in cups or bottles at bed time....we learned that the hard way. Good luck. C.

Dr. Logan Childers in Independence (40 hwy and Crysler) will see younger children if there is a problem. He doesn't like to see them before two if possible. One is there isn't much need and two--doesn't want to scare them.

I have responded to this type of question before. And I can confidently give you the reccomendation of Dr. Donna Thomas. She is located in OP, on 95th street between Metcalf and Lamar. Her office, her staff and herself are great! Super clean, super friendly and work great with kids, since that's all they do. I started both of my girls going to the dentist as soon as they had their first 2 teeth. I have worked in the dental field for many years and am very picky when it comes to my children's dental care. They first visit or two they will probably just do an exam and get them used to seeing the dentist, and then as they get comfortable they will work up to cleanings. Children, just like adults, should go every 6 months for their check-ups. At first, my five year old didn't enjoy going, but now she asks me if it's time for her cleanings. I can't believe it myself!!! I have had a lot of friends wait until their kiddos were like 2 or 3 years old and by the time they went to the dentist they had at least one cavity, if not more. Very scarey. Others have no problem waiting?! But I didn't take the chance. Good luck in finding a dentist for your baby...make sure whomever you call, ask them if they have dental hygienists cleaning the kids teeth or dental assistants. If they have hygienists, great, if not...at least find out if the assistants have had additional training. It's a big deal, assistants are NOT allowed to clean below the gumline, it's against the law. And assistants are not required to be licensed either, hygienists are. There is a big difference in the amount of training/education/cerification.

I worked in a dentist office for years and our dentist would also not see a child until they were at least 2yrs. There isn't really anything a dentist can do to a child's teeth as young as 1 other than just look. I waited until my first was 2yrs and my second was 4yrs before seeing a dentist. As long as you are caring for his teeth by simply wiping them with a wet washcloth and introducing him to a toothbrush by letting him chew on it and hold it he should have great teeth, and of course never let him go to bed with anything other than water.

Hi J., my son goes to Leonard Hoffman. His number is ###-###-#### and he's located at 8600 NW 64th ST, Suite 204 in Parkville, MO. We love him. Though I can't answer your question of whether or not he'll see a child under two. His staff is so nice though, that if they don't they would probably tell you who would. Good Luck, Jenn
