P.G.
Get a 2nd opinion, and I would also see the REGULAR doctor to find out why this might be happening. It almost sounds like his immune system is funky (I'm not a doctor, but the infections, cavities, etc., just don't sound normal).
I have a 5 yr old and a 6 yr old little boy! My youngest has had several visits to the dentist! He has had root canals done on all his baby teeth. They put caps on all his back teeth and pulled one of his lower jaw teeth, they had put a spacer in, and he has had 2 teeth in the front pulled and no spacers. He gets Boils on his gums all the time , even in the spots where he don't have any teeth, and he is so young to be going through all these problems, he has been on antibiotics so many times and it just seems like they keep coming back! The Dentist had told me that if they keep coming back after his antibiotics are finished then they will have to be pulled! I don't understand how they could go about pulling all his little teeth knowing that the permanent ones have to come in ! Has anyone else went through any thing like this and what will I be looking forward too?

this sounds very extreme...get another opinion preferably w/ a pediatric dentist. And hve you mentioned all this to his regular pedi just to run it by him?
Good luck
sounds like the Dentist i read about that was funding her infertility treatments and then child care and medical bills for her premature quad babies by perfoming extra procedures on patients to get the extra insurance money.
THey finally caught her for fraud, Disgusting.
I would get a second opinion.
This doesn't sound right. Why is he needing root canals?
Are the sores on his gums boils or canker sores? They sound more like canker sores. I remember my grandma telling a story from when she was a child many years ago. A family member was getting repeated canker sores and always going to the pharmacy for medicine, the pharmisist asked his if he ate a lot of pickles, he said yes. The pharmisist told him the brine was to acid for him and that was causing the sores. It was an easy quick fix.
To me it sounds as though the dentist is gouging you, using fear and a lack of knowledge to force you to get unnecessary treatments. I would find a new dentist.
*** I'm not calling you stupid. We are raised to trust medical professionals, many of them misuse that trust. ***
The worst part of reading this is I think my son had the same issues but the terms you are using are confusing me.
My younger son was born with his baby teeth not having the enamel it should. His teeth didn't get cavities so much as just fell apart. For him to be able to eat he had all his molars capped. He was lucky because his front teeth weren't affected.
So I don't really know what the procedure would have been if his front teeth needed to be addressed. I would imagine they would have just pulled them as well since the adult ones start coming in around five or six.
He is 14 now and all his adult teeth came in no problem and their enamel is perfect.
I can only assume you are speaking of canker sores, not boils. I have no idea why anyone would prescribe antibiotics for that, in theory that would make it worse. I agree with others you need to look into another dentist if you can.
Never, ever heard of this problem. Get a 2nd opinion.
I mean, is he brushing, flossing, rinsing? Eating healthy?
I agree with getting a second opinion! It NEVER hurts to get a 2nd opinion on ANY major work that 'needs' to be done or when you just aren't getting answers as to why something is or isn't happening,ya know?
The peace of mind you will get is well worth the extra time, energy & money!
Poor baby! That sounds miserable! Hope you get some answers and he gets this all taken care of as soon as possible!
Get a second opinion. I wouldn't go back to that. I'd find another.
I agree, you need a second opinion, A.! This doesn't pass the sniff test to me!
No idea. (I know--not helpful!)
Just wanted to echo what others have suggested--get a second opinion.
Maybe you already have by this point?
Good luck!
Ditto on the second opinion.
I do want to mention that a lot of people do not realize how much a child's baby teeth can affect their adult teeth (and other areas of their health like their heart). As I'm sure you know, it is extremely important that you figure out what is going on with his baby teeth as soon as possible so that it does not lead to major problems with his adult teeth (decay in baby teeth can lead to decay in adult teeth, and sometimes pulling the tooth doesn't fix that problem).
Get him in with another dentist as soon as you can. Also watch his gum/teeth care habits. With so many problems, I would make sure that you personally help him brush his teeth 2-3 times a day, FLOSS (I know...it's not fun), use a children's mouthwash, etc.
I hope you find someone different who can help you resolve some of these issues. Teeth can be so painful!
Is there a Children's Hospital in your area? I'd go there and get a second opinion. I have to admit that a root canal makes no sense to me on baby teeth. Really, get a second opinion.
So sorry your child is going through this!!
I would also get a 2nd opinion. Gumboils stick out while canker sores are more flat. Does your son eat a lot of acidic foods? Ketchup, tomatoes, oranges or juice? There is a mouth wash that helps with canker sores it is called colgate peroxly. My kids get canker sores and their orthodontist told us about this. If it is boils they usually come around cavities or damage to the teeth, like falling and hitting them.
I agree with the other person who mentioned taking him to his pediatrician. I hope he gets better soon. Thats tough :-(
A.:
Welcome to mamapedia!
I'm sorry you are going through this. I would go to a second dentist and get their opinion on what is going on with your son's teeth.
I am concerned that your DENTIST is doing root canals and on baby teeth!! An Endodontist does root canals. Since the roots of baby teeth dissolve when permanent teeth come in - the need to do a root canal can be lowered. A root canal is the simple term of a pulpotomy - removing the pulp from the tooth roots - some teeth have 1 some have 4. In baby teeth - they have to put something that will dissolve with the roots....so I am confused.
You need to find out what is causing the boils in your son's mouth - does he have food allergies that you are not aware of?
You need to work with your PEDIATRIC dentist, Endodontist and Pediatrician to find out what is wrong with your son's oral health. Oral health problems can lead to sooo many other health issues. All of these doctor's need to work TOGETHER on this so that your son can have a healthy set of teeth!
Good luck!!
I'd get another opinion. I'd also take immediate steps to put that child (and the other one) on patented pediatric nutrition to strengthen the immune system, knock out these infections, get rid of the boils, and so on. A friend's daughter had terrible tooth/gum problems and no longer does. It can be done.
Go to a naturopath or alternative health doctor. They can find the root of your child's issue. Sounds like something systemic to me and the dentist isn't finding the problem, just putting a bandaid on it. Or if you don't like alt. medicine, go to a children's hospital/new pediatrician who can go over all of your little one's symptoms. So sorry your little boy is in such pain! Hope you are able to figure it out soon.
I would have a second dentist take a look, one that specialized in children.
A., find another dentist NOW. Here is my experience:
We love our dentist. Unfortunately, a few months ago, we had to find another one because of insurance matter. We went to another dentist and he diagnosed/suggested to take my 7 yo. to an oral surgeon as he found an abscess in a baby tooth (my kid never complained/cried/showed pain or had an apparent swollen tissue), he didn't want to pull it out (???), then, the dentist told me he needed to extract 4 baby teeth (cavities) (???), and lastly I had to take my child to an orthodontist for some other "problems". Afterwards, the dentist office sent a $500 bill (I have dental insurance) (plop!), then a $200 bill, and several more mistakes. Well, matter solved after a few clarifications with their billing department (It took months for them to just send a $50 bill-real amount- ). After all this, we came back to our former dentist and he diagnosed my child with just a couple of stained teeth, which they might become cavities, that was all. We got a third opinion and it confirmed what my dentist had said.(We came back to our dentist!)
What I am trying to say here is that YOU should change your dentist, and even if your kids have real problems, these should be addressed in a different and more professional manner. Please find a second opinion, and a third one. They are too little to go through this. Please do not wait too long.
