I'm Losing Weight and My Hair like Crazy!

Hi, I'm a 21 yr old mother of two. A three year old boy and a 6 month old girl. Whenever I gave birth to my second by c section I had morning sickness afterwards and battled post partum depression. I took Wellbutrin for my depression (for about 4 months) and just delt with the morning time nausea. Well, 6 months later I've also gotten an Implanon implant to prevent future pregnancies. When I did this these symptoms intensified plus I'm losing a ton of hair ALL THE TIME! I'm tired all day long at work, I feel like I could fall asleep but as soon as I lay my head down at night it takes me 2 hours to fall asleep. And even after that I still wake up to the slightest sound and it keeps me up for another hour. With working full time and caring for two children this can be extremely frustrating. I get up at 5am and have to do half the work. I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful husband to help in the morning. I don't know what I'd do without him there. Also I'm having irregular periods and lack of sex drive. I feel like I have an excellent life outside of my body but all this extra stuff is wearing me down. Anyone else had an experience like this? Also, I went to the doctor today and he's doing some labwork, testing my blood for big time problems like kidney, liver, and thyroid. So I've already seen a doc...I don't need a lecture on that, just someone who's dealt with similar issues??!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the support. My tests from the doc all came back normal (as he suspected) and I've also had the Implanon removed (not a fun experience). So time should tell if I'll be back to normal soon. The first night I had it out I woke up with no nausea. I hadn't felt that feeling in over a year(since I had it all of my pregnancy and since I've had her). I will update again in a week or so.

YES! It sounds like your hormones are out of whack, specifically your thyroid, progesterone, and testosterone (yes, women need this too). Thyroid: hair loss and fatigue Progesterone: depression and difficulty sleeping Testosterone: sex drive (as well as other things). This is textbook.
Go to a specialist in bio-identical hormone replacement because the last thing you want right now is to be on prescription drugs (which mask symptoms and don't alleviate the issue).
Or, e-mail me and I will help direct you.
Honestly, this should/could be an easy fix for you.

make sure he looks at the thyroid problem... Keep up on your testing and double check on everything. I was diagnosed with the same symtoms and it was thyroid. Just do your research. Good luck

Shae, I have read other replies you have gotten and my heart goes out to so many of these mothers. I have several DVDs which I am willing to give to anyone who wants to contact me. The DVD is call Woman to Woman, Taking Charge of Your Health and it is an interview of Dr. Jamie McManus, M.D., by Sloan Barnett, consumer advocate and TV journalist. They discuss some of the most critical health issues facing women and children today.

If anyone is interested in having the DVD, they may email me with WTW DVD - Mamasource in the subject line. ____@____.com. I am in business with Sloan Barnett's company but there is no cost for the DVD.

I'm am not totally sure what the Implanon implant is. But years ago after my daughter I got the DEPO which was a shot I had to get every 6 months to keep from getting prego. All the sudden I too had weight loss and hair loss backaches and low sex drive.

My doctor switched me to the patch and it seemed to work better. However it would come off with my Jeans sometimes and I wouldn't notice it for a day or so.

And just say I ended up having a baby boy 1 year later. HeHe

Just thought I'd comment.

Hair loss can be from STRESS you don't even know your stressing my hair dresser used to always know when I was HAPPY from when I was stressed and she'd say it was by my hair.

I just thought she was NOSEY..but it turned out to be true.

Good luck.

Hello Shae,

After I had my daughter, which she came C-section. After the bloating went down and because I was breast feeding I lost weight and my hair fell out too. I was told to keep taking the prenatal vitamins which makes your hair grow. And after i stopped breast feeding the weight came back on.

Your Wellbutrin may make you lose wieght. And as far as the nausea and irregular periods maybe you should consult with your OB about the implant. It may not be the right thing for you or the right type of implant.

Good luck with all of this and I hope you start to feel better.

Sincerely,

Cristi A

My daughter lost her hair like this after giving birth to both of her lovely daughters. What she found out through drs and even a psychatrist (I am spoiled to spell check sorry), was that worry about the baby was causing the stomache problems, worried about not hearing baby, worried about SIDS, just worry. On her hair, she lost a ton of it (I mean handfuls it seemed). Once her harmones settled down the hair loss stopped it all grew back and she was fine.
I am no dr but watching my daughter go through this and hearing your symtyms sounds like you are going through the very same thing she did. Just try to settle down sweetie and take life day to day. I am almost certain if you do then these problems will vanish. Best of Luck, B., Mother of 3 granmother to 10

It sounds a little like adrenal exhaustion. Have you researched this online? If your labs come back normal, ask if you can have your cortisol levels checked. Low functioning adrenals will cause constant fatigue, but difficulty falling asleep. Another thing to watch for too - If the dr. says your thyroid levels are "normal" ask them for the actual results and the range. If you are on the low side of the range, then you may benefit from supplementation.

I can sympathize with you completely. Once your bloodwork comes back you will probably see an overactive thyroid. It is easily remedied, but you have to be very diligent in taking the meds every day. Do not miss any does. You will start to feel better in 3-4 weeks. If you are still not feeling yourself by then, have your doctor rerun the thyroid test to make sure you are getting a high enough dose of medicine.

As for the lost of sex drive, hair falling out, no energy.... they will all improve over the first couple of months. Don't give up....keep taking your medicine no matter what. It is so important. The thyroid affects every function in your body. Look it up on WebMD to get a better idea of what you are experiencing.

Good luck to you!

Just to comment on the hair loss - with both of my kids, especially my last one (she's now 15 months old), I lost TONS of hair around 6 months after giving birth. It would just keep coming out, especially in the shower, which I hated. After doing a bit of research, I found out that it was quite common and very normal to lose lots of hair at that stage. Also, I was starting to slow down on breastfeeding, so I'm sure that change didn't help either. Anyway, I still shed more hair than I'd like, but NOTHING like 6 months ago or so!!

Have you tried taking a multi-vitamin supplement, it may help with some of the issues.
GNC has a great one that helps with all the issues you have listed.
I hope the doctor will get to the bottom of it. I was experiencing some of the issues you listed and it turns out one of my hormones was low. (I am only 29) I am on a hormone and on a new multivitamin and I feel like a new person!

You should probably reconsider your chosen form of birth control. In fact, I have never heard anything good about this form of birth control and was even denied it once! The doc I saw refused to give this to her patients. I have a Mirena IUD. No pain, regular but nearly non-existent periods, and it prevents birth just as well as other forms of b.c. If these symptoms started right after you started this birth control it is probably the cause of your problems.

Look up the side effects of the birthcontrol you are on! I was on Mirena and had the same thing happen to me. I lost hair by the handful, no sex drive, severe depression(didn't even want to hug my kids), and tired ALL the time. My obgyn said that for some reason I am in the 5% of women that cannot handle synthetic estrogen or something. You might be in that category too. If I was you I would get off whatever you are on. After two days of being off Mirena I was almost back to my usual self. Talk to your doctor about a copper IUD. It has an awesome success rate and has no side effects. Good luck

I had these issues anytime I took any type of birth control. When I quit taking it, it went away in about 3-6 months. I am bad with meds though, always have bad reactions. My hair came back thicker each go round though. Good luck - no lectures, I promise.

Hi there,

I have a strong suspicion that the cause of your extreme lost weigh is Welbutrin (actually, I have been thinking to switch from Lexapro to Welbutrin to lose some weight :) ) About your hair lost it is totally normal to lose big amounts of hair after having babies - I went through that and I still lose some, it was BAAAD. Also, any antidepresive will cause lack of sexual appetite/orgasms(I've been there), Lexapro is the best antidepresive I've found - I can still have them.
Sorry, I cannot think of anything else but I hope this help a little. If you have any questions just shoot me an email and relax, please, relax.
Happy Mother's Day.
Patty

A friend of mine was on the same thing. She eventually had it removed. She was losing hair like crazy and had many of the same symptoms. Have you considered an IUD instead?

I have a six month old and my hair is falling out like crazy too. I mean I actually have bald spots and clumps still fall out, so I hear your pain. This happened to me with my first child too and I cut my hair really short. I am hoping it'll get better. The good thing is you are ONLY 21 and your hair is very likely to grow back to the way it was!
