Buy one of what you want to make and use it as a pattern. Take it apart and see what the layers are made of.
I'm a grandmother looking for info on making the cloth diaper absorbent inserts for the pocket diaper covers. I have 2 granddaughters in New Zealand ages 22 mo and 4 mo. the inserts are terribly expensive in NZ. What is the best absorbent fabric to use, and what fabrics are best to make the layers? cost is an issue but I think I'm helping my daughter already by sewing them.

Google how to make cloth diapers. There are many sites and they also list what the diaper needs and inserts.
I have made a few recently with the Zorb II and flannel. I have not used the micro fleece yet but will soon. There are also diapers that use a pocket and you "stuff" the inserts inside the diaper.
Good luck and enjoy your adventure into diaper making as a grandma.

PS Wazoodle is a good supplier. I can't remember the name of the one in Missouri but they both ship quickly to your home.
Google how to make your own sanitary napkins. Seriously, it gives you lists of what sort of fabric to buy, what type of thread you have to buy to sew them with so that when you dry them the thread melts and makes them...waterproof isn't quite the right word but it means the melted thread creates a barrier for the blood to stop at so no leaks.
I made a bunch for a couple of friends and the fabric wasn't cheap but it was sturdy and very much the perfect thing.
My mom made her own diapers from cotton. They didn't have all those fancy and expensive types of materials back then, and she wouldn't have been able to afford them anyway.
She was given and bought regular square cloth diapers, and created her own pattern to rework them. The top was wide to fit around the baby's waist, and tapered to go between the baby's legs, long enough to fold UP as a flap to double the material in the front.
Buy some of the cloth diapers and experiment. By the way, I wouldn't necessarily trust the pocket diaper covers to keep the diaper in place without pins.
