I'm Gaining Too Much Weight.

I just got back from my dr. appt and found out that I gained 11 pounds in my first trimester. She didn't seem too concerned but mentioned that diabetes and hypertension are some of the complications of too much weight gain; and to top it off, I'm 42 on Saturday, which is also a contributing factor. It's pretty obvious that I'm eating too much, but I'm starving all the time, and if I don't eat I get a headache so both my son and I have a miserable day. I'm just wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they did about it. I gained 50 pounds with my son and was down to my regular 123 in about nine months without much of an effort, so it's not about vanity, it's about being healthy, not starving, and available for my son and my husband for the next six months.

What can I do next?

Look for foods that will fill you up better, more protein maybe? If you feel you have to eat all the time, get healthy stuff to munch on. Good luck to you and congrats on having a new one on the way!!

I was 41 and 43 when I had each of my children, and gained a total of 24 and 22 lbs, respectively. I ate everything I wanted. However I also exercised moderately and regularly. Just things like a 1 hr walk 4x a week, and beginners pilates and prenatal yoga.

I know it can seem almost impossible to fit exercise into your schedule sometimes, but trust me. It will help keep the weight off AND it will make your pregnancy, labor and delivery much easier, plus you'll have more energy when it's time to juggle two children.

As long as you're eating healthy and not just fatty calories I would imagine you'd be ok. My ob told me of one of his early patients she was a tiny lady and gained 80 lbs for each kid, and then would lose it quickly, some people just gain weight. You might try some more liquids, I would get raging headaches if I was anywhere close to being dehydrated.

I gained 75 lbs with my first. I dont think you are overeating if you are able to eat in your first tirmester go for it. just spread out the rest of your eating throughout the pregnancy. I wouldnt worry to much about it right now. Congrats on the new baby to be!!

Hi P.,

Did you mention to your provider that you are hungry all the time? What did she say? While I was pregnant many moons ago, I read that being hungry for certain things could be an indicator of a mineral deficiency, but I don't remember the particulars on that. I seem to recall it had something to do with wanting to eat dirt or clay something lol. It certainly has been many moons. I never wanted to eat dirt, or clay, but I wanted certain odd foods.

Anyway, since you are hungry alot, could you have mabye more really small meals during the day? Whole grains, bulk foods, healthier snacks/meals that sort of thing? Also, sometimes being thirsty manifests as a hungry feeling. If you don't have good water intake, try slowly increasing it until you're where you should be.

If your doctor isn't concerned about your weight gain, then you probably shouldn't be either. She may be wanting to see if your weight gain evens out some. But if you want to make the eating you're doing work the best for you and baby, make sure that it's as healthy as you can get it.

Happy and healthy eating, and congrats! :o)
