Okay, so I am technically not running, I am speed walking, on a treadmill, on an incline 7 miles a day, 5-6 days a week. I love it. I bought new shoes from a store where they watch you walk and tell you what to buy based on what they see, so I bought the Asics Gel Kayano, which is funny b/c that is what I had been using in the past. I also bought specialty running socks from them. So, after about three months of my routine I am getting new blisters on the sides on my big toes, ouch! Do I need new shoes, do I need new socks, what do I need???? Thanks you running mama's :)

A suggestion that I always got from my running coaches was to have two pairs of shoes. Feet sweat a lot! And since you are using them almsot everyday they might not be drying completely and can cause blisters. If you have two pairs of the same shoe you can just switch them everyday so that you are always starting with a dry pair. (And I also agree with trying a bigger size!)

It could be a number of things causing the blisters, shoes that are too small being one of them.

What size is your "normal" shoe size? What size running shoe did you get?

Your running shoe should be at least 1/2 size bigger than your normal shoe size. I go one full size bigger.

Other considerations - too much rubbing combined with excess moisture from sweating. But I suspect, given that you are a new runner and have good socks, it is either due to shoes being too small or the fact that you are just starting out.

Let the blisters heal and then try again. Make sure to let your feet air out and wash them well after each run.

Good luck - and good for you for run/walking!

PM me if you would like to talk more about running - I love it and have been doing it for years! And I love Asics! They have always been my go-to shoe!

Possibly new shoes. I think your shoes might be too small, or too narrow. I'm pretty rough with my exercise, and I never get blisters. Even at stores where they help you and custom fit you, they sometimes make mistakes. Try going up even 1/2 size.

I love Asics!!! - in additition to the "too small" recommendations (which I wholeheartedly agree with!) you could also look inside to see if there is a seam. I have had that happen with newer shoes and until they are good and worn down, they rub. I have also been known to use athletic tape over my socks or over a cotton ball directly over a blisther to add a tougher layer over my skin that is getting rubbed until a shoe is fitting better.

Did they check the fit of the shoe? Your toes should be able to spread out and live a little. I agree with Scarlett that you should try a bigger shoe than usual. I'm a 9 1/2 in regular shoes, 10 in running shoes.

Last year I started using Vibram 5 Fingers. You will not ever get a blister with those shoes. They are designed to fit like a glove. THey are not for everyone, but personally I love them to pieces, and have a hard time running in anything else these days.

You might just need to give your feet time to get used to this whole running thing.

First, great job on the exercise. I bet you feel great and you are putting in a lot of miles. I run regularly and have for years. I have never had blisters. I wear cotton socks without issue. I buy a whole size bigger in running shoes than I do in regular shoes. It may sound like they will be too big but they don't feel big. I am thinking based on the location of your blisters that your shoes need to be bigger.

Did you get your normal shoe size or did they tell you to go 1/2 to 1 size bigger? Your feet will sweat and swell when your walking and or running so you should always go up in size.

Hi J,
Assuming that you were given the correct size shoe, I'd say try a new brand of sock. There are special running socks that say right on the package that they are designed to reduce friction/blisters. Sometimes, some brands of running socks are too thin for us "delicate" skin folks :) I had great luck with the Wright sock (anti-blister) brand. Maybe you can order on-line.
Happy running!!!

My husband is a chiropractor & marathon runner & this is what he suggests...
He thinks you should watch how your walking, pay attention to make sure your feet are landing straight, (the best way to do this is find somewhere where there is 12 in tile & try to keep your feet parallel to the tile when walking) the blisters usually mean your landing with your feet turning outward then twisting off with big toe as stepping. He also recommends getting a hip adjustment. Good luck!
