Don't let them induce you!! Unless there is truly a medical reason for doing so. Once you are hooked up to an IV you can't move around, you are at the mercy of the docs and nurses and can't progress naturally thru labor. Labor will be harder, more painful and most hospitals have a protocal that once induction has started you will have a window of time to deliver - usually 12 hours. Once that time is up, they like to progress to a c-section. NOT COOL. I'm not saying this is always the case, but this is common in regular hospitals and I would hate to have it happen to you when it seems you are progressing naturally on your own.
It sounds like you are starting the early signs of labor. This can start weeks prior to delivery. The muscles need to prepare so they start practicing now. This will sometimes feel similar to menstrual pain.
Babies hardly ever come on time, especially with the first one. The due date is just an estimate. Try, as much as you can, to let your body do what its supposed to - just relax before baby makes its debut.
Good luck, embrace these moments, and God Bless!

congrats! your back hurts bc it is near the end of your pregnancy and the baby is probably dropping or already dropped into position and it puts an awful lot of pressure on your back. very normal at the end of your PG to feel that pain and pressure.

There is no reason to induce because you are 1 day after your ESTIMATED due date. You need to discuss this with your doctor. Best of luck.

you may be starting to have some light contractions / cramping in your back - that's a good thing - it will help move the baby into position.

Why are you being induced so soon? Especially if there is nothing "wrong" with the baby (except your own discomfort)..... there is TONS of research to indicate that induced labors are longer and harder and typically require more pain medication and result in more c-sections. I would not induce until at least a week past the due date.

Good luck!

Back pain completely normal, especially this late in the game. Babies don't usually move as much near the end - they just don't have alot of room in there!!!!! If they say everything looks good, relax! :)
Why only wait 1 day after due date? Don't they usually advise 1 wk past due date before being induced?? Due dates are not always (if ever) accurate, so why not give nature some more time to work.......

Good luck! and congrats on your 1st baby! You'll do great!!!!!

Your back probably hurts because of early labor - this is a good thing - your body is getting ready.
She is moving less now because there is less room, and hopefully she has assumed the head down position.
An induced pregnancy is a much harder pregnancy. Unless there is a medical reason, I wouldn't do it. I was dialated and effaced with all of mine, and they broke my water (a form of induction) and that was no problem at all. But don't let them give you Pitocin, etc or break your water before your body is ready. Unless there's a medical/health reason to do so.

If your BP was high enough to induce, they wouldn't wait until tomorrow. This is fact.
If baby is fine, there is NO reason to induce. Babies come AROUND their due date, not on them.
I know its hard to wait, but you need to let that baby come on its own terms or you risk 20 hours of labor, only to be told you "need" a C-section. I've seen it happen dozens of times.

Unless there is a good reason, I would not want to be induced. Babies come when they are ready. Your back hurting, may be an early sign of labor.

Your back hurts because your body is getting ready for baby, as Samantha said.

Is there any medical reason that they want to induce by Friday? Some babies need more time to develop. I went 10 days past due and did have an acupuncture induction... had a great birth with my son, no further interventions necessary. It used to be that a lot of hospitals would wait until the mother was nearly 2 weeks past before inducing; it can spare the mother and baby many interventions and thousands of dollars. It seems hasty to be told "you will induce if you are one or two days over 'due', esp. when due dates are so arbitrary.

If your back is hurting on and off keep track of when it hurts and for how long. It could be back labor. I had all my contractions in my back with my oldest.

Add: Yes they could make you wait till tomorrow to induce you if your bp is high cause you still have time to go into labor on your own and be safe. When I had my oldest they told me I had to have his that weekend so they induced me.

I was induced (HELLP syndrome) and I loved it! I got my epidural first, so I didn't feel a thing. I got to chill with my husband and all our visitors and sleep a little. I didn't progress , so I had a c section in the end (kiddo's head was turned to the right, so he wouldn't descend). Even my c-section was fabulous. I had a tiny incision and almost no pain at all. I had to be on mag after delivery, but even with that, I was walking around normally within 12 hours.

However you end up having your baby will be fabulous, if you're both healthy at the end. Don't worry too much about it! Just enjoy your time.

Sounds to me like you're beginning labor because of your back hurting. Have you had the burst of energy and wanting to get the nursery ready? I'd have that overnight bag ready and near the door!!

I'll expect the "So What Happened" to be announcing the birth of that precious little baby girl VERY soon!!!

Good luck!!! God Bless!!!

Your baby isn't moving as much because she is squished in there!
I would have to wonder though why your doctor feels the need to induce. You are due tomorrow! There is no reason to induce unless something is wrong. Babies take their own sweet time somtimes. I would talk to your doctor about that.
Your back probably hurts because labor is starting OR because you are carrying around a bowling ball in your belly.
Welcome to motherhood! It's a bumpy ride.

The very early stages of labor can feel very much like the cramps you get before your period.
Sounds like this may be IT! Lol
Hopefully, this is O. punctual baby...
I would not agree to induction on my due date or even a few days past.
This is often done for convenience instead of medical need.
Speak UP and discuss with your doc.
Speedy delivery!

Hi A.,

If there is no medical reason for inducing on Friday than please say NO. A due date is an average of when women give birth so in other words, 50% of women give birth before that date and 50% give birth AFTERWARDS. There is no reason to induce until you get to 42 weeks!!!! The average for a first time mom is something like 41 weeks and 2 days. Your baby needs to stay where it is until it is ready to come out and it just isn't ready yet. You should be pleased that baby is growing and happy where it is instead of forcing an eviction.

If you decide to induce, please know that you will likely have a c-section. No matter what you have heard, it is a miserable SURGERY and has a long recovery. You won't be able to drive for about 4 weeks, you will have a hard time breastfeeding and you will limit how many additonal children you can have. There are so many complications to c-section.

Please, please listen to me. I was you 7 years ago. They told me to induce and I did - even though there was no medical reason to do so. I had an awful labor for 18 hours (labor that is started by pitocin is so much worse than natural labor) and then an emergency c-section. I didn't see my baby for hours after he was born. He had a terrible reaction to the pitocin. The American Medical Association does not recommend that babies be exposed to pitocin - yet it is used for inductions and does cross the placenta.

A few more days being pregnant are a gift, not a curse, and the best gift you can give your baby is to let her chose her own birthday! If you have questions, feel free to message me directly. I can point you to all of the appropriate scientific / medical articles so that you can read up on it yourself! Trust me, your doctor is trying to make sure that he or she doesn't get called this weekend!!!!

The rule of thumb is 2 weeks give or take around your due date.
As long as the baby and you are not showing any signs of stress, then there is no need to induce.

Sometimes that backache can be an early sign of labor.
Walk around a lot and go up and down stairs and you might be able to get labor started.

Don't let them induce on Friday. There is no reason to do that other than that your doc doesn't feel like working on Saturday or Sunday if you go into labor on your own over the weekend. Your body will start the process when it is ready. You and the baby will be better off if you let things start on their own. The back pain is very normal - just your body getting ready to deliver. Good luck :-)

I feel compelled to weigh in with a few things:

1. I wanted my son OUT, and begged my midwife to induce me. She begged me not to because I really wanted to avoid a c-section. She said induction results in MUCH higher c-section rates. But the baby was measuring big, and I thought a big baby would increase c-section odds, so I made her induce. Guess what? C-section after 12 hours of horrible pitocin-intensified labor (epidural stopped working after a couple of hours).

2. I have a good friend who is a high-up exec for Providence. Right now she's working on a big revamp of their birth system. They're changing everything because their c-section and complication rates are so high, and one of the biggest risk factors they found was inductions. Inductions are bad for baby and bad for mom, unless there's a glaring medical reason why they must be done.

3. When you're induced, the pitocin makes your contractions much stronger and more painful, meaning you'll need an epidural sooner, meaning you'll be restricted to lying on your back more, meaning you won't be able to move around for comfort or to assist labor. I truly believe that if I hadn't been induced I would have had a much more pleasant, natural, vaginal birth.

4. If I could do it all over again, I would NEVER be induced, or let a doctor induce me unless there was a real medical reason. Most docs won't induce until the baby is 2 weeks past the due date. Don't let your doctor set the stage for your birth experience because he/she wants to golf on Saturday.

5. Things are getting pretty tight for your baby now, so you won't feel as much movement. She's packed in like a little sardine!

6. Good luck!!!

I think it's very common today for doc's to plan deliveries. It's so convenient for them to be able to make plans with their families now. With the medicines and advances it sure is easier for them to be able to plan stuff better.

I think it does't hurt anything for a baby to be induced. It seems to be one of the things today that is better.

If you don't want to be induced then say no, if you don't really care then go ahead.

Baby's usually slow way down as they shift and move into the birth position. Their little heads are sliding down the chute...lol so they are in position and they need all the rest they can get before they start their big journey of getting out.

If her vital signs are good then don't worry. If you have concerns though call the doc's office and find out if you can pop in for a quick listen to the baby.

Back labor can cause that. I had it a lot with my son exspecially the few days leading up to delivery. He was head down but his face was up (putting his back on my back) which is what they said caused "back labor".

Is there a reason they are inducing on Friday? Typically, they will let you go up to 2 weeks past your due date (since it's just an estimate anyway). With my son they told me Oct 5, I told them Oct 15-16. They had me down for induction on 10/17 (Thursday because they don't scheduled for the weekend which would have been exactly 2 weeks past what they said was my due date)...I went in on my own early that morning. With my daughter my due date was Dec 10 (I thought 7th) but was scheduled for induction on Dec 6 due to gestational diabetes but went in on my own on the 4th.

My last two pregnancies I had to go for non stress tests for the last two months twice weekly. It was a mixed bag for me emotionally. I looked forward to seeing the heartbeat and knowing the baby wal all right. However, I would get anxious in between. I'm with Amanda, just relax. Let the tests reassure you and hopefully the baby will come on it's own. With my second they induced 6 am on the 10th of July-but she still didnt come until she was ready on the 11th of July. And when she was ready I had to warn them because she came quick!!!

Sounds like you might be in the beginning stages of labor maybe.... Congratulations and I wish you the best.

I was induced about 5 days before the "due date' and I never experienced the horror that I have read on the responses below. I checked in at 7am, lounged around.... About 8 they broke water, I walked around then after a couple of hours (no pain), started pitocin, after a while got epidural, and at 6 sharp my daughter was born. No threat of C-section, everything worked wonderfully.

THAT SAID... I started at day 1 with pregnancy in top physical shape. A lot of it depends on your overall health and attitude.
