Hi everyone! My little girl just started walking and I wish to start her on Potty training now.
Any ideas on how to do this, as she is my first, would be greatly appreciated.
I'm buying the potty this weekend to start next week. Routines, ways to do this etc Welcome.
Thanks in advance Moms!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'd like to thank those who answered my request so promptly!
I think I'll take the advice and just start to read Potty Training for Dummies to get me started. I bought the potty (its' Elmo and she loves it)...she's already starting to display some signs. Also, i forgot about a trip in two months i'm making to Canada, so I think I'll hold off on Potty Training til when I get back from it.
Thanks so much Moms!

S.,

Research shows that children are not cognitively ready to potty train until they are at a cognitive level of at least 18 months. Personally speaking, I have 4 children and have worked on potty training with students with mental impairments as well, and have found that they are not really ready until on a cognitive level of at leat 2 years. In addition, every child is different and may be ready sooner or later than that. My advice would be to start talking about the potty and maybe reading some books just for awareness on her part. I started potty training my oldest way before he was ready and it was a source of frustration for him. He did not end up getting trained until he was 3 1/2. I waited a little longer with my others and it was much easier. This is just my 2 cents worth. On a happy note, I find girls much easier to train than boys :) Good luck and enjoy your little girl!

You can start introducing the "idea" of potty training, but the actual potty training itself will not be possible until your daughter is ready. So you can get some potty books, and buy the potty and explain what it is, but don't push her because that may cause delays. Just go with the flow and watch for signs that she may be ready. Some signs are that she is uncomfortable in a wet diaper and wants it off immediately. She may hide or go to a corner to poop. Once she is physically recognizing how her body feels when she needs to go, then that is the time to start sitting her on the potty and trying training pants.

Good luck!

Good luck on that!! My advice is to wait until she is physically and emotionally ready to do so! Save yourself (and her) a lot of frustration and wait until she is at least 2 1/2 or 3...Sorry if I seem like such a downer, but if they are not ready it can be a big, problematic deal! I was able to potty train two (boys) in a day (literally one day in diapers the next in big boy undies) and it was so easy and painless!

You should wait. Babies are not physically ready to potty train until at least the age of two. Babies that potty train sooner are rare and not the norm. They are likely to have far more accidents and you'll be potty training for years instead of a day or two.
If you wait and let your little girl decide when she is ready it will be easy and there will be no frustration.

I think that's a little early to potty train. I worked at a daycare for 11 yrs. potty training the two yr. olds and if you started too young they would always regressback and at two or sometimes three you are potty training again. That's just what I figured out. Girl's do learn faster than boys but not that fast. There lil' blatter still is learning how to go potty. K. R.
