Ideas for Using Old Baby Blankets

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for what to do with old baby blankets. We have my husband's baby blanket and some that my mother gave me from when I was a baby. These blankets are all quite old, but most are still in nice condition. We would like a way to use these blankets though they are not necessarily practical for wrapping our baby in. I thought about putting them up as wall decoration, but I'm looking for other alternatives. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

I have seen people make like a patchwork quilt with pieces of old baby things so that is one idea, but I don't know what the other blankets are made of. Good luck!

I made a big quilt out of my kids blankets, big enough to use on a bed or for a picnic. I also made a couple of small quilts out of receiving blankets (that I hardly used) and gave them as gifts for new parents.
If you want to keep them to display, you could use them as a tablecloth on a dresser or small end table.

Make a quilt! That way you have an adult sized blanket that your kids will treasure when they grow up. My grandmother used to make quilts out of old pieces of clothing. I love these quilts now because they're so "retro". Make it easy by cutting a pattern (just a square) and sewing them together. Then use a sheet as backing and sew ties on the corners of every 4 blocks or so (my mom always uses colored yarn for this) and there you have it! It's pretty easy. I would recommend using a sewing machine though. :)

Here's a few ideas
If you know how to sew, maybe you can use some of the fabric for a book cover (photo album, baby book, etc).
How about an outfit for a special stuffed animal (you can get lots of patter ideas at a store like Joanne Fabrics or Michaels)
Quilt/pillow
Chair cover
Personally I would either frame a piece of it, or put a piece of it in his baby book with a story about your favorite lovie.
Maybe you could use the fabric to make a sling/carrier for your baby, that would be sort of neat
One last idea; my husband had quite a few quilts that his mom gave him and we sewed a bunch of them together, we used the blanket inside a duvet cover for our guest room bed, it saves the memory and is practical for a quilt, just not noticeable.

Have fun with it, obviously my ideas require knowing how to sew, but Joanne FAbrics offers classes all the time, just check out the website for dates and times.

I know that when I had my babies we got a lot of blankets too and they were all special because they were from different people. What we did was cut them all up into smaller squares and made 3 quilts for our boys, I actually also included some of their 1st year bibs and shirts and some of my mom's favorite clothes that reminded me of her as she passed away when my 1st son was 1 1/2 years old. Now they all have quilts they can use for quite a while (until their teenages and too "cool" for things like that). I also made pillows out of the blankets that were more "puffy". Hope that helps!

I agree with the other posts, that making a small quilt would be nice way to remember while making something "new" for your baby on the way.

Make a quilt out of it and use it for the new baby, or display the new quilt.

If they are smaller, you could make some nice throw pillows for your bedroom, or your babys room if you have a chair or lounger in there.

Or perhaps a padded set for a rocker or glider rocker for your babys room??

I heard of some people making them into pillows or other items; maybe it could be made into a teddy bear for your new son.
I'd love to hear some other ideas from Moms too; our 7 1/2 year olds blankie is falling apart and I'd love to keep at least a piece of it. I was thinking about framing part of it along with a baby photo of him.
hope this helps spark some ideas.

Make pillows out of them. When your child is older these will be great pillows to snuggle with when you read together.

I love all the ideas of framing bits of them. How about a shadow box or frame with a square of each blanket (including one of your son's)and a baby picture of the owner? That's something that could be passed down to your son when he has his own children.

you could get them made into a quilt for your baby, if you do put them up as art I would say frame them.

What about taking up quilting or having them made into a quilt with other materials. I have a friend that is saving some of her daughter's clothes and blankets and when she turns 40 she is going to take up quilting!

What I suggest what you do is to cut them up into square pieces, and if you know someone who does quilting. Is to ask them if they could make you one or more quilts out of these old baby blankets. And than when your son or daughter graduates from High school, you can give them as a gift to your child, and tell them that it's a piece of family history and explain it's made from old baby blankets from the family. That's my suggestion.
