Hello,
My son is 18mths old, he was born premature and very sick at birth so he's now developmentally delayed, he also had some feeding issues, he drinks a bottle, but never more then 3-4 oz at a time, he's almost 20 pounds, we give him high cal formula and also add extra cals to that, my question is he's getting sick of baby food, and wants to eat what we're eating, but he hasn'r figured out how to mash food yet between his gums, so he mostly just swallows things and sometimes gags or chokes, which can be scary, we go to OT, and we're working on trying to get him to chew. Does anyone have any recipes or ideas of food i can give him that he can eat thats not baby food?

What can I do next?

I love wholesomebabyfood.com too. I used it a lot! I would just start experimenting and see what he can do and what he likes. Fruits are a good finger food b/c they are mushy, but they can also be slippery. I would cut thick slices of banana but them cut them in fourths so they were chunky but small. You can also smash up some Cheerios or something and coat pieces of fruit in that so it will be easier for him to grab. Baked apples are good and if you add some cinnamon, brown sugar and/or butter I'm sure he'll love them! Baby Goldfish is also a good one, as well as Gerber puffs and Cheerios. Also string cheese cut up is good because it's soft and you can make it chunky.

I would try to give him soft foods that are chopped into a chunky texture. It may be that he just doesn't want a puree. Try chopped avocado, mango, banana. You can also chop up chicken or other table foods into smaller pieces that he can more easily get down without choking, but that still has consistency. One other thought is to put larger pieces of soft foods into a mesh baby feeder that he can chew or suck on, like this: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2404768

Casseroles can be nutritious, high in calories, and easily mashed. For example, we make a green beans casserole that consists of browned hamburger, green beans, cream of mushroom soup, cauliflower, and cheddar cheese. When baked long enough, everything is a consistency that can be "mushed" with the tongue, and my 16 month old LOVES this recipe.

Hi M.---It's been a long time since I've had babies, but I remember mostly taking what we were eating and then putting that in a mini food chopper. I wouldn't make it necessarily mushy, but it did help making some of the bigger pieces small enough to not be a choking hazard. I would also make lots of casseroles and put them in the food processor also.

I use the website www.eatingwell.com a lot. I know they have a whole section on foods for kids...recipes, menus, ideas for picky eaters, etc. I am also a wellness coordinator for several Drs and I have a bunch of great info, like serving sizes/numbers for kids of different ages, shopping charts, etc, that I would be happy to share, if you'd like them. Just let me know.

Good luck. I wish you well. D.

My mom said she used to toss whatever she made for dinner in the blender for the babies. He probably doesn't like how bland baby food is and is ready for something tastier. I would assume you can control the chunkiness of the food in the blender too so that you can probably get him adjusted to the chunks. Good luck :)

My mom said she used to puree the food that they so that we could "eat" the same thing.
