Icky Cough

My 4 month old son has a really icky cough. It sounds like he has a lot of congestion in his chest. It seems like his cough is full of phlegm...I'm pretty sure I gave the ickiness to him. He doesn't seem bothered by it and it's not interfering with his appetite or sleep, he just gives the worst look of disgust after he coughs. We have a doctor's appointment scheduled for him tomorrow, but I was wondering if there's anything that you've done with your kids who have had the same problem...What works best? I've heard that a cold mist humidifier works well, but I've also heard that I shouldn't do that at all. Too many conflicting reports!! I'd love to try something to alleviate the congestion! I know it can't be his favorite thing!! Thanks for the help!!

What can I do next?

Try a neubilizer. It's fantastic. I give them albuterol and you will not believe what great work it does. My daughter recently had two ear infections and a throat infection. The phlem was horrible. (shes only 7 months) After two doses, she finally was able to breath and coughed out tons of phlem. Hope you child gets better.

I've been going through the same thing with my 4 month old. He hasn't had a fever and his eating isn't really affected, but the doctor said he had bronchiolitis. They had us do the breathing treatments, and also recommended a humidifier and elevating his mattress to a 30 degree angle. I've also been giving him saline drops in his nose and suctioning the mucus out. After doing all that it got somewhat better but he was still coughing and hadn't gotten rid of all that junk. They made it sound like it just has to run its course, but after taking him back to the doctor they are now saying he has the beginnings of an ear and sinus infection. I think it's good that you're going to the doctor even though it's not affecting his appetite and sleep - it's better to be safe than sorry! I have done everything that was recommended and I don't think I could have done anything more.

I put a thin layer of Vic Vaporub on the bottom of his feet and the cover them with socks (especially at night when he's going to bed) and it helps to take the cough away.

I use the warm mist humidifier from vicks that allows you to add a vicks or kas solution that has that Vicks smell that helps my dauther with her cough and congestion. I got it at Wal-mart, the humidifier for $13 and the solutions for about $7.

I know this may sound crazy but people swear by it. Try putting Vicks vapor rub on the bottom of his feet at night. I don't know why it would work but like I said people swear by it and next time my son has a cough I will be trying it too! Good luck!

baby ayr saline drops in the nose and suction it out. You will be amazed at how much better his chest will sound after you suction out his nose.

Both my boys have been sick with a cough recently. The ped. said that the steam is best for the cough.

Okay this might sound crazy but put some Vicks vapor rub on his feet and put some socks on him, he will stop coughing within 15-20 mins. A friend once told me, and I have tried it on both of my little ones and it works! Good luck.

Steam from a shower is better than a humidifier. I also like to use the baby soap for cough and colds.

A humidifer can help. More than likely, unless your son has a bacterial type of infection, there is not anything that the doctor will prescribe. He is too young for most decongestants or other OTC type meds. You could try putting a pillow or rolled up towel under his matress to help him at night when he is sleeping and keep him more upright during the day. Also try bulb syrenging his nose to help keep down on the yuck that could be draining from the nose.

I used to sit in the smallest bathroom I have, with the shower on hot and let the steam loosen some of it for him. I stayed as long as the baby was okay with it. I do use a humidifier for my children too. Not sure if it is a cool mist...I think it is a normal one.

My pedi always recommends a cool mist humidifier and saline drops for the nose, then suction it out. This will help alleviate some of the congestion. Other than that, sometimes you just have to wait it out. It's probably good that it isn't interfering with his sleep. If it starts to, you may try elevating his head somehow (maybe sleep in a swing or something?) until he is able to breathe better.

Good luck! I'm sure his Dr. will have some advice for you also.
