Ice or Heat?

Hi Everyone,
Three weeks ago, I stubbed my pinky toe into the door sill and of course broke it. I ended up having to go to the ER because my toe had to put back in place (it was sticking up and out in a 45 degree angle). Yesterday I went back to my doctor and they did an xray. The fracture is completely healed after only buddy taping it, iceing it and elevating it. I told the doctor that my whole foot throbs throughout the day and worse at night. He told that the throbbing will eventually go away. I didn't ask him this, but I thought I would check with you guys. Should I ice my foot or apply heat to help with the throbbing at night?

What can I do next?

Ice. The throbbing is due to too much blood flow to the area, and ice will reduce it. Hope you feel better soon!

The fracture may be completely healed, but the tissue around the bones may still swell after being "on" it throughout the day. Ice will help relieve any swelling, which will reduce the throbbing.

Take an Advil.
It helps with any pain or inflammation.
Or take Motrin.

When I broke my leg, they actually put me in an ice boot.
I thoroughly hated it because I hate anything cold, but after a while, my leg was completely numb and I didn't notice the cold.

They did that AFTER having me in a heated whirlpool bath. Even during physical therapy, they alternated heat and ice, always ending with ice.

You could try soaking your foot in very warm epsom salts and water, then drying and waiting for a little bit, then apply ice.

I was told to alternate both.

I hope you feel better soon. Broken toes or anything else, for that matter, are no fun.

Best wishes.
