Hello all of you wonderful supportive Mother's. I was wondering if anyone knew of a great Dance studio in the Denton area that takes 2 year olds. I want to go ahead and put my little girl in dance because she is soooo energitic and she loves music and dance and I know she would love it so much, epecially meeting other little ones her age. Does anyone know of a nice dance studio, thats not to expensive that will take my two year old for dance class. I want to start her out in hip hop because like I said she is so energetic, plus my 10 year old son is always hip hop and break daning to music (he doesn't take classes and he is really good) and my daughter loves to dance with him and like him. It is so cute seeing her try to spin on her head with her bottom in the air...she wants to do everything big brother does. Also my son is interested in taking hip hop classes. I tried him out in one and all the other kids were girls and the hip hop dancing was girly to. He wants to dance where there are more boys and where he can really learn cool, choreographed hip hop and break dancing moves. He also likes popping and krumping...pretty much anything in that style. Now back to my daughter everywhere I have called they have to be three years of age...any idea's from anyone on both my son and daughter. Thank you all so very much. I love being a member here because everyone is always soooo helpful and I have advice for many myself. God bless to all!!

The majority of dance studios won't take kids under 3 and who aren't potty trained. However, the city of Denton offers dance classes and MIGHT have a baby one. Other than that, even out of Denton, I don't think you'll have much luck.
I don't recommend Denton Ballet Academy. It is a very disappointing experience. There are several schools in Flower Mound and Lewisville that have decent reputations. We go to Turning Pointe in Bartonville (about a 10 minute drive from South Denton), which is well-run, clean, and has caring instructors. They do offer hip hop classes, and there are always a couple of boys that participate. However, there may be a school more suited to your needs. I know Dance Fusion in Denton has a focus on hip hop. Good luck.

I don't know how far your willing to drive, but their is a studio/gym in Flower Mound called Excite! They have a boys only hip hop and they recently started something called Lil Dancer. Give them a call, ###-###-####.

Hi K. -
Two y/o is a little young for an organized dance class. But maybe you could find a mommy and me type class at Gymboree? Most 2yo aren't even potty trained yet, so you can see how difficult that would be for a dance studio to manage and keep class moving along.
For studios that do both, I can highly recommend "A Time to Dance" in Corinth - it's a short little drive south on I-35E to Swisher Road from you, but it's a Christian dance studio so the costumes are modest, but the dance quality is amazing. Their hip hop classes go from beginner up to level IV, I think, and they could do an eval on your son to see where to start him. For his age group, I know there are a couple of classes that are mostly boys.
Blessings, S.

If you want to drive, LifeSong Studio in Grapevine has a pre-ballet class that starts at age 2. The Dance Space on 407 in Flower Mound starts at age 2.5 with ballet and tap. Lifesong also has a hip hop class.

My little girl was at LifeSong last year and she really enjoyed the class. Right now she's in summer classes at The Dance Space and I'm going to keep her there for the fall. She has learned so much more at this studio. Sometimes the girls act their age but the teacher is great with them and always gets them engaged and back on track.

Hi K.,

I have taught dance for about 20 years, from children to adults. There is no way that a 2 year old can be in an organized dance class, especially one that is specific to a certain dance form like hip-hop, ballet, etc. 2 year olds need to be in a class that allows then to explore movement and figure out how their bodies work. Look for programs like Gymboree, the Little Gym, Kindermusik, and what is called "creative movement" for preschoolers at various dance studios. Also, 2 years may be a little young for dance studios as most places start at 3 or have a requirement that children be potty-trained. After creative movement, children usually go into a combination class that involves ballet, tap, and structured movement/play. At this age they are developing coodination but do not have the fine motor skills for hip-hop. In fact, most respectable studios require several years of dance training and a strong base in jazz dance before hip-hop, perhaps starting at age at 8 or 9.

Denton Dance Conservatory owned by Lisa Racina is a great studio and you might look into that for your son. If they cannot meet your needs they can refer to you a place that can. However, for your 2 year old you might look into Denton Parks and Recreation classes as well as Texas Woman's University, which has one of the top dance programs in the country. The department has a Community Dance program run by professor Gladys Keeton. Classes are taught by both undergraduate and graduate dance majors.

Good luck.
