I Think My Daughter Is Lactose Intolerant.

Hello Moms! I am wondering if any of you have children who are lactose intolerant? I believe my daughter is struggling with this, but am not 100% sure. First of all, she hasn't always been this way, so that is one of the reasons I'm not sure. For the past few months, she has struggled with constipation, headaches, nausea, some vomiting, and foul smelling burps. We went to the doctor, and she put her on acid reflux medicine, which seemed to make her constipation worse. A few weeks back she had an ear infection and was put on antibiotics, which made the symptoms seem to go away, but they came right back as soon as she went off of them, which was weird. Of course, I wouldn't want her to stay on antibiotics permanently. I've been really careful of what she eats, and for the most part we've been able to keep it under control. But she spent the night with her grandparents the other night, and had cereal w/milk for breakfast, and she was miserable the whole next day and into the night. She finally threw up and felt much better afterward.

I am just wondering if any of you have any ideas of what I might give her to keep the symptoms to a minimum. She's only 6, and it's REALLY hard to keep her away from certain things, although I will if I have to. I would much rather try all natural remedies if possible. We have a Nature's Pantry close by, so I can go there to get homeopathic things.

I guess I just don't understand why she would be fine all these years, and then have this show up now. Has this ever happened to any of you or your children? What might be the reason for the all of a sudden milk allergy?

Thanks Ladies!!
Liz.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice! We went to the doctor today, and she informed me that she probably is having a sensitivity to dairy right now because of all her stomach has been through. She had a stomach virus a couple months back, and then she was put on the antibiotics a few weeks ago, and her tummy just hasn't gotten back to normal yet. She advised me to cut out all dairy for the time being, so we got some soy milk, and some Lactaid for when we do reintroduce the dairy products. She hasn't had any dairy today, and the burps have subsided. I'm so happy she's starting to feel better! THANKS!!!

I don't know if children can develop the "allergy" out of nowhere, but I have heard that they sometimes cycle in terms of intensity. Perhaps, it's always bothered her, but not enough to notice or to mention? I just found out my 2 yr old son is lactose intollerant as well...mom diagnosed. :) He kept spitting up yogurt with peaches, so I thought it was the peaches, then it was with strawberrys until finally it dawned on me that it might be the milk. He had been fine for the first year and a half, but did have some reflux issues. He also was on Previcid, but after I figured out this intolerance thing, we've been able to go off the medicine! That was my whole goal...yes it's a little difficult, but switch her to soy milk or rice milk instead of cows milk...you might want to try vanila flavored first if she's picky. They also make soy yogurt that tastes really good and fruity. We don't let him eat cheese, and we limit his butter on his toast. Smart Balance WITH FLAX OIL Butter is the only one without milk. They also have SEVERAL cookbooks online and in the stores that offer milk free cooking. You can still make cookies, cake and all the other crazy things she likes, but limiting her milk intake. Iron Kids bread is the only bread without milk products also.

Let me know if you have any questions. Hope that helps. It does sound like an intollerance problem.

I was just having this conversation with a daycare mom I just met. Her daughter is allergic and also on Prevacid daily among other stronger acid reflux medicines. She can not have milk of any kind and has even had surgery for it.

That got me to thinking about my 8 year old. My daughter has a problem with going to the bathroom too much. It's always loose and is often accompanied with pain and gas. She pretty much eats what she wants. It's hard to control her too because she has such ideas about what she wants. She has always ate everything and has just started becoming more picky as she has not been feeling well. I did take her to the doctor and we talked about her diet. He never considered a milk intolerance. But come to think about it I raised her on soy the first 2 years because she threw milk up so often. This doctor also put my daughter on Prevacid and I don't think it's helped her.

We eat a lot of veggies, choose as much all natural and or organic as we can get our hands on. We cook with perfect water that goes through a 5 stage filter that cost me a few hundred per year to keep up with.

Another thing that makes me wonder is that in the last year she has stopped liking yogurt and she hasn't been interested in cheese very much.

I wish I had some answers for you. I guess I'm in the same boat.

One more thing... My daughter gets bad diarrhea if we go on a road trip. She has gotten car sick and thrown up too. I don't know if it's all connected. When we moved to California she ended up in the emergency room twice on the way.

You may want to try probiotics, you can purchase it at Nature Pantry or Whole Foods. You can just add the powder form to any drink or purchase it in the capsule form. Keep the probiotics in the fridge to keep potency. They work wonders.

Your daughter could have become lactose intolerant. Your body can stop making the enzyme required to digest the sugar in milk, either totally or it can just make less of it. However, I have never heard of anyone becoming constipated because of it- it usually causes a great deal of stomach distress and diarehea. I became lactose intolerant when I was 14. The doctor had me go off all milk products for a week and then try a few again- I Threw up and had terrible stomach pains and diaehea. You can buy lactaid free products and even tablets that contain the enzyme to help digest milk products. Yogurts are usually ok as long as they have active cultures- these break the sugar down. I hope this helps!

have you tried giving her milk that is lactose free, like
Lactaid? there are also pills that are in the pharmacy
that you can take, I believe they are also Lactaid.
My son is 2 1/2 and when he first began drinking milk he
seemed to be okay with it, and then he started having some
pretty major constipation. I switched him from whole milk to 2 percent, then skim but unless I gave him Miralax each
day he would still get really bound up. I ended up switching him to soy milk and he loves it, and it also
solved the problem. I ended up finding out he is NOT
lactose intolerant, but in some kids they have a hard time
digesting the calcium salts in cow's mild and it constipates them. one of his playmates suddenly began to
vomit and have stomach issues after drinking milk and she
was diagnosed as lactose intolerant. she was switched to
lactose free milk and soy milk and she is fine as well.
I know from my friends who have kids with this problem that
it did develop rather suddenly and the lactose free products made all the difference. so I would try it in
your case just to see how she does. you could try the
soy milk as well. it has a different taste and texture
than cow's milk, but there are vanilla and chocolate flavors available. my son loves both, but drinks the
vanilla the most. I even switched to it because I have
never been able to stand drinking milk, probably because it
was forced on me when I was a kid! but I needed to bump
up my calcium and soy milk is a good source of that as well.
anyway, try it and good luck with your daughter. I know
how hard it is to have a child in distress like that and
I hope some of this helps.

I found that I was allergic to milk when I was in my thirties, my mom was diagnosed this year at 71. My daughter had some sort of sensitivity to milk when she was in grade school, she had to stop having cereal and milk for breakfast. I had a boy in my preschool who kept falling asleep in strange places all the time and he was diagnosed with a milk allergy. Another mother talked to his mother and took her son off milk and he had a total change of personality, before he probably could have been diagnosed as ADD or ADHD, then he calmed down so much. I don't know what to tell you, but taking her off milk seems to be an option, the foul smelling burps and getting better with antibiotics makes me thing that it could be something else that the Doctor needs to diagnose.
