I have a Bach. degree but need to find a way to gain management exp. I have done all the things required but don't have "that title" for my resume or to land a management job. How did you break into management? What can you recommened? I know it's not easy but I'm ready to work at it. Any help is greatly appreciated. I know I can make a lot more money if I venture back in my field of study. If you are a manager what do you do and how long have you been a manager? What do you recommened? Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone :) Right now I work for a small company in pest control. I cross trained from telemarketing/sales to collections/billing. I like what I do but also ready for change. I saw some jobs on monster for restaurant managers and I sent my resume in for a job. I am willing to start at the bottom and work my way up. They have manager in training jobs that would be great. It's the basic level that I'm over qualified for, I can't even get a interview to say I'm willing to clean toilets and mop floors so I can make fries and burgers down the road. I have worked since 8th grade. I had 4 jobs in high school and always worked hard. I still work hard and I'm willing to make it. Thanks again for all your help and congrats to you all for making manager while working hard.

You need to be more specific. Where are you trying to work. For example manageing a buisnesss office is different then managing a retail store, or a restraunt. I was a department manager at a retail store and I have no college degree at all I just worked my way up.

You have to work your way up; that's almost always the way to get there, to start at the bottom of the ladder and work your way to the top. No one is 'handed' a management position without having proved themselves worthy; you can't manage someone if you haven't already done their job. I'm not saying that to be snarky, that's just the way things are now, degree or no degree, people want employees with experience vs a brand spanking new degree and zero experience. You can do it!

I have. Here's the secret.
Start working and work your way up & out of your job. Get promoted. In other words: earn it with dedication, performance and hard work.

O. other option--charity work where you can head up a project and manage people that way to start. It's "something" for a resume.

Not sure where you work now, but usually promotions come from within.
Hang out with the managers and ask questions and pay attention. Volunteer to sub for when Management is away.

don't know...but as a non-degreed person who manages an office, i worked my way up. it's just possible you may have to start at entry level and earn it. i know, wacky idea right? it's called paying your dues! :)

okay okay....for what it's worth, i will admit that having a degree is probably very valuable in most situations. but i think if you're looking to land a management job JUST for the "experience" and to put it on your resume, you're looking at it wrong. you do need to get some real experience and while some companies may hire you off the street to manage, most GOOD (imo) companies look within first.

I've been in the position to make decisions about who got promoted to management in companies. People who told me they "wanted to be a manager" almost never got there. People who demonstrated the ability by doing their work plus extra, were almost always the people offered the promotion to manager.

Other than that, start small - a smaller company, a retail or restaurant environment, or as a volunteer.

Sans places like Mc Donalds that will hire managers you have to work your way up. No one will hire you as a leader if you haven't proven you can lead. Well except McDonalds and the like.

I am not a manager, but one thing I notice about effective managers - They like people, they take the lead on projects and they know how to find the right people to do the work and they work hard themselves. PS - Not all of them had degrees!

Due the fact that I work from home, I took myself out of consideration for promotion, but in my company you start in the lower position and then do the work that the manager would do. Onec you prove you can do it they typically promote you.

Really though it depends on your boss's management style and what her or she looks for.

Also although you may not have Managment as a title, have you actually done any work that would fall under that category? Such as training new hires or being responsible / supervising other people? That counts as experience...

Good luck!

UPDATE: Not with it this evening - have you looked into volunteering? I am not sure what your area of expertise is, but that is a good way to gain experience and help a good cause..
