He is not going to get sick from missing the shots themselves. What she was saying is that he could catch one of the diseases that the shots are given to prevent, if he does not have that shot. Those diseases are pretty rare. Lots of people don't even give their kids the shots and some do it on a different schedule than the doctor recommends. If you are feeling nervous about him getting something, then just go get the shots.

I didn't vaccinate my second two kids after tons of researching (luckily my first is OK event though fully vaccinated-but she does get sick the most for whatever that's worth-she even got Chicken Pox and she was the only one vaccinated for it??!!).

IF you are going to vaccinate, then no, one month will not matter at all. Make an appointment, you're fine!!!! You can still get all the shots comletely done with no difference. Some people wait until school starts.

My doctor (very pro vaccine) even told me the reason shots are given so young is for the "herd" mentality. They want ALL kids vaccinated, and they know mothers of babies are much more conscientious and will make it in for appointments vs when kids get older. It's not actually because tiny tiny tiny babies need all those shots to stay safe. That's actually HIGHLY debatable. Several shots aren't needed at all once kids are a bit older. Get the Dr. Sears Vaccine Book if you want to do some reading...if not, just make the appt and don't sweat it, you're not late!
You're fine!

He isn't going to get sick because he missed his shots, but he can get sick if he is exposed to the illnesses the shots are supposed to prevent. Just make an appointment and get him his shots as soon as possible.

Relax. Breathe.

We have friends whose kids are 100% vaccinated and are sick all of the time. Literally in the hospital every month.

We also have friends who have never vaccinated their kids and they don't even get a runny nose.

You need to do some research and stop letting people scare you. Fear comes from lack of knowledge.

Well, please ignore Carrie B. She's been brilliant for days now.

Your child will be fine, but please call his doctor and schedule an appointment for his shots. He may be due for more at 6 months, so they'll work it all out for you and space them properly.

Please have them done, though...yes, your child can get ill if you don't have their shots done. My oldest daughter had pertussis (whooping cough) about a month before she was to get the vaccination for it and it was VERY scary.

I purposely got our kids shots later so I could tell if they had a reaction and I think it's just better to wait a bit. That's just my opinion but it won't hurt at all. The only problem is if your child got a disease he wasn't protected against.

Momy, I have moved 35 times in my life, and 18 of those with kids. We frequently fell behind in our shots, unintentionally.

And at this age, it is common for kids to have little flus/viruses and miss a dose. Just reschedule.

Please, please ignore Carrie B's input on this. There are many terrible diseases that were nearly eradicated from our society, but have seen a return. Little babies are at a much higher risk of contracting diseases and then have immature immune systems to fight the potential life-threatening viruses.

Just call for an appointment. The doctor will just push out the schedule for the vaccinations and you'll be just fine.

Just take him in and get the shots and then he should be covered.

The ages for the shots are based on approximate... not the actual dates.

Just get him in for his shots. Yes, if you don't keep up the schedule he can be infected by the diseases he is going to be immunized for. Beyond that there is no danger.

Due to older sister's crazy soccer schedule my third didn't get his 12 months shots until he was 18 months old. Since he wasn't exposed to anything no harm no foul. :)

There's more than one schedule - certainly a few weeks give or take will not make a difference.

No. But if he is/was in contact with someone who has the diseases those vaccines are supposed to prevent, he will get them. But those are not common everyday illnesses. So as long as he hasn't been exposed to them, you need not worry. Just make an appt and get the shots done.
What your friend meant was he can get really sick if he contacts those diseases, that's the main reason to vaccinate against them. She did not mean he will get sick just because he missed his shots. It's similar to flu shots, you don't get terribly sick with flu because you forget to get a flu shot. You only get sick if you are exposed to it and come down with the flu.

I've known moms who do not want to give shots at all. If he has been inside and not around a lot of people and you have not been around alot of people I wouldnt not worry just go get the shots. Years ago they use to have epidemics of diseases and babies were dying left and right because they had not gotten there immunitites up yet . They were really particular bad diseases. Some say why bother now we have it under control as a nation but really there are individuals comming in from accross the border every day how do you know the one in the shopping market or if you take a plane ride with someone. Protect your baby get his shots.

Your friend is anxious for you to be serious about your child's immunization schedule. Call your ped's office on Monday morning and ask to come over and get the next scheduled shots. They will tell you when they can fit him in.

If your baby is not exposed to anything, he will not get sick. However, there is a lot of whooping cough going around BECAUSE so many people are not getting their kids vaccinated. Adults get around sick kids, catch the virus and give it to kids who are not vaccinated, and it becomes more and more prevalent. Two moms on this site recently had (or still have) children in the hospital with whooping cough. One is a little baby and that case was/is very serious. Babies who catch whooping cough can die from it.

So, instead of being confused and scared, make the call, get the appointment and get the shot. It takes 3 DPT shots to get the immunity, MG. Be careful where you take baby right now - big crowds and coughing and colds and all of that are bad for your baby, regardless of how many shots he has had yet, anyway. Wash your hands often, eat healthy to keep up your immunity. If you are nursing him, it helps, because your breastmilk has your immunities in it to cover him until he has the immunizations. (Helps, mind you. Not prevents....)

That's my advice. Please get the appointment.

I wonder if your friend was talking about the issue of never getting his shots. Yes, then most of us believe that it's good to get the shots to prevent such illnesses as measles, whooping cough, polio, diphtheria, etc. When you give them isn't so essential. I wouldn't let it go for months but giving them a month later is not a problem.

Your baby will be fine. In fact, they've actually done studies that prove that vaccinated kids are getting sicker MORE than nonvaccinated kids. And the areas with whooping cough have extremely high - higher than average - vaccination rates, so that's totally a myth. Nationwide the vaccination rates for DTP are around 68%-72% and the state of Washington (with a huge outbreak now), for example, has the DTP vaccination rates at 87%. And almost everyone getting it are fully vaccinated, so that's a concern they are trying to figure out. Another interesting thing to note that in Japan they decided to wait until the age of 2 to START vaccinating, instead of doing it as newborns as we do. Guess what happened? Not only did SIDS suddenly almost disappear from the country, but whooping cough in infants dropped DRAMATICALLY. Japan now has the lowest incidences of SIDS worldwide! As you might tell, we choose to delay/selective vaccinate. ;)

There isn't a specific age when babies are more likely to be exposed to a non-immunized person who has the illness. Sure, if he gets whooping cough, polio or rubella, he'd be extremely ill, but the majority of the population is immunized, so if you are not travelling out of the country, your son is not that likely to be exposed. When was the last time anyone in the US had polio? Your kid won't get these diseases from lack of immunization out of the blue, he'd get them from being exposed to someone who had the illness. I don't know if you work and who does your daycare, or if you're a SAHM. I'd be more worried if your kid was in daycare, since you can get a religious or philosophical exemption if you don't believe in vaccines - you may think your baby's "classmates" are all vaccinated but they may not be. If you're home with him or grandparents or a private nanny babysit, I wouldn't be all that worried. Some of my younger kid's vaccines were not on schedule, and I never did the non-school mandated vaccines. Some people opt not to vaccinate at all. Good luck

Just make an appt and go in. No one will chastise you, except to remind you about your next round & how important it is to stay current on shots. You're good. Just schedule them next week.

He will be just fine! Just schedule a well baby visit for him as soon as you can and bring his shot record. His doctor will give him the shots he needs. Don't beat yourself up over this! The chances of him getting sick are very slim.

And don't pay any heed to anti-vaxers. For all the moms who say "lots of people don't get their children vaccinated and they are just fine," if that's your attitude then why use car seats or teach children to look both ways before crossing the street and wash their hands after using the toilet; there are people who do all of those things and are "just fine." The problem is that you are putting your child at risk for deadly consequences, not just a little case of the sniffles, deadly diseases that have no cure.

This should not be a problem. I have taken my kids a month or so late and worked things out with no issues. Make the appointment and when you arrange his shots, ask what he will get next month. you might need to space things out. Whenever my kids had to get a lot of shots--more than 3, I would get 2 and then make a nurse visit for the other 2 in between visits. My doc had not problem with that. The only thing I was warned about time wise was when I took both my baby and my 4 yr old to for their check ups. The 4 yr old still had 2 weeks to go. The doc told me that there may be an issue later with the shot she needed since it should be after she turned 4. I had to make a nurse visit for that.
