I Like the Ergo Carrier, but How Much Weight Can It Hold?

I have a very heavy 7 month old son who has to be held all the time, and I'm interested in the Ergo carrier, but how much weight can it hold? Currently my son is 26 lbs. Are there any better carriers? I'm not much of a wrap fan. I hate dealing with a lot of fabric.

What can I do next?

I think it's 40 #, and you can put him on your back when he's too heavy for the front. My son was a pretty big baby, but he really slowed down on weight gain as a toddler, so he's just now reaching 40# at his 4th birthday. So it took him three years to go from 25 to 40 pounds, plenty of time to get my money's worth out of the Ergo. I guess a better question is how long you'll be ABLE to carry him if he's such a big guy.

The Ergo holds up to 90 lbs and it's great. bigbluetrunk is currently doing a giveaway of an Ergo carrier.

I have a bECO that I bought from www.becobabycarrier.com several years ago that is very much like an Ergo (both are considered 'structured carriers'). It is awesome, and I used it to carry my 18 month old up until he was pushing 40 lbs. I think the last time I used it was last summer on a day hike - he's 4 1/2 now. I would highly recommened a structured carrier for your little one. The weight is really not bad - especially if you do it a lot, then your muscles get used to it. You can look at purchasing one used (or an Ergo) on babywearing.com. Alternatively, I live in Cottonwood Heights, and I'd be interested in selling mine if you want it (pretty, gender neutral color). It's in excellent condition, and I'd give it to ya' for a great price. ) Or if you just have more questions about how they fit, etc. or want to look at it (I can send pics even), pm me.

I have carried my 35 lb 4 yo in mine no problem and I find it to be very strong and more comfortable (ERGOnomic!) considering all the many other carriers I've tried.

I had an Ergo and they can be worn either in the front or on your back like a backpack. Because the Ergo has a shoulder strap and a very nice hip belt it's supportive enough to hold a small 7 year old -according to their promotional materials. I had my kids in it until they turned 3 and were too heavy to go on long walks....then I moved to a jog stroller.

The website has some good videos on how they work.

Ergo's the one that worked best for me. GL!

I have an Ergo and I LOVE it. If I recall correctly, it goes to 45 pounds. I still carry my almost 4yo in it occasionally on my back. I enjoy carrying both my 1yo and 3 yo in it, and am very happy with it. I almost want a spare... one for the car and one for home.

I tried the freehand, and felt it was not as comfortable for me. However, my good friend loves hers and thinks it is much more comfortable than the ergo--so I think it is an individual thing. Is there a store near you where you could try it out before buying?

My sister in law carries her 6 year old in the ergo still sometimes when they go on big hikes. She also carries her 4 year old in it quite often. I am not sure what the weight limit is on it, but it can hold a lot!

I am not a fan of the Ergo I would personally go for the Beco if it was between an Ergo and Beco, but that being said MY favorite is a carrier called Freehand. Its a local girl (at lease in Denver) and its my favorite structured carrier. It surpasses the ergo and Beco in weight and comfyness PLUS you can forward face or front face or back its the only carrier that can do all 3. The Beco and Ergo they can only face you and my son is 10 months and wants nothing to do with seeing me all the time. :) he is 21lbs and it goes up to 45 I think ?? Plus it doesn't hurt your shoulders or back. Google it and see about it I think the carrier is freehand and the website may be together be ???
