I Have the Most Difficult Baby When It Comes to Feeding.

Is it unheard of for babies to not like a certain formula? Ellie was on Nutramigen and someone suggested trying the Good Starts to help with the BM's being so acidic because Good Start has probiotics in it (probiotics replace the good bacterias in your tummy that are lost due to diarrhea- or that's how I understood it). So we tried it and since then her reflux has been much worse and she hasn't wanted to eat much. She even threw up her last bottle (10:30) last night and still didn't want to eat at 4:45am (even though her last bottle she kept down was at 7pm). I'm not concerned about her being sick just yet but think she may not like the formula...am I crazy?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Went to the grocery store at 5:45 this morning for some more Nutramigen and she's been drinking it fine ever since. She must've just not liked the Good Start. Who knows!

I understand!!! My son, who is now 3 had acid reflux and it was a nightmare....We first started off with normal formula but had trouble with that and then we tried soy. Still wasn't able to keep it down....We finally had to use the Nutramigen. It was expensive but that was the only thing that my son could keep down with no problems. After a little while, my pediatrician said we could try regular formula again. So the next day, we did and my daycare called and said he was throwing it up....The very first bottle!!!! We had to keep him on the Nutramigen until he was able to switch to milk....So...no, you are not crazy!!! Her stomach just might not be able to handle anything else....I hope that this helps somewhat!!!

I would talk to her doctor.

I do know though, that it can be hard for babies to switch formulas, so if it is a new switch you might want to give it a couple days for her to get used to it.

She could be intolerant to the milk in the formulas. Maybe try an allergy friendly formula? I would try some soy based with no milk proteins first, then the more expensive ones. Their little bellies have such a hard time in the beginning because their intestine/stomach lining hasn't matured yet. Good luck, these things are hard to watch and not know what to do :(.

She might be allergic to that formula. I would check with the doctor.

We breastfed for the most part but I had friends who couldn't and they also tried lots of formulas. They actually said that the Good Start formula caused their little ones more problems then most of the others. They had more splitting up and gas problems while they were on that formula. It is possible that she will like one more then another but not for the reasons that you are probably thinking. It really isn't because of taste as much as how it feels in there belly. If it hurts, why would you want to drink it? We always used Enfamil or Simalac which was what our doctors recommended. I think my friends used those two also. I know they are more expensive but it really does make a difference. I would try those before you assume that she has problems with milk products.

My daughter had full on projectile type vomiting back in the day when we didn't have all these formulas to choose from. The doctor said not to worry that they never throw up the whole bottle even if it looks like it. I know he was right because she was the fattest little baby! LOL. She's skinny as can be now. She wasn't a fussy baby either and really did like the formula we had her on. Just be patient. It will work out.

Babies know what they like and dislike even at a very young age. But since you mentioned that her acid reflux is acting up with the new formula, it may not be so much the taste she doesn't like as the fact that she is associating that formula with pain. I' personally put her back on her other formula.

Thanks!

I know you said that you had the most difficult child when it comes to eating...but I seriously thought I did...then I read your story and they are so similar. My son is now 6 months old and has reflux. We have tried every sort of Enfamil - Lipil, then the one for babies with "spit up problems", then the one for babies with gas and colic problems, then we went to Nutramigen for 1 1/2 months, then we went to soy as it ended up being my son has a hard time with breaking down milk (as I am also lactose intollerant, but it can affect anyone). Anyway, we spent the last two months on Enfamil ProSobee (soy based formula) but that caused too much constipation. Since then we have switched to Good Start Soy formula and my son is doing great and eating like never before. Seriously...switch from Enfamil...I swore by it in the begining because the company was so good at sending coupons and emails; however, I have come to realize that Good start is much better. Try your kid on soy ...Nestle Good Start and see what happens. Feel free to email me directly any time as I truly know what you are going through: ____@____.com.

Have you tried any soy formulas? It could be that he can't tolerate milk based formulas. I would also get myself to the health food store and buy some Baby Acidopholis. My oldest had acid reflux problems and could not tolerate milk on top of it. I got him on the acidopholis and was able to get him off perscription meds. I think it's a 1/4 tsp in ONE bottle per day! Worked like a charm and you could instantly tell a difference! The first day I would actually give it to your son twice. Good Luck!

It is completely natural. My little Ellie (Elizabeth) was diagnosed with acid reflux at 6 weeks. We had her put on soluable prevacid, and on Soy formula. It took her about 3 days before she would drink it without pushing it away. She didn't like the difference in taste. Now she is 13 months, and is still lactose intolerant and still has acid reflux. We give her her "pez" (Prevacid) right before bed, and soy milk, and you would never know the difference. She is a happy chunky baby. All else fails, you might want to call your nurse line and just get their feedback.

Hi B.,

Here is something you might try:
make her bottle more of the nutramigen and less of the good start for now and then keep going so it is the opposite. I hope this makes sense. What formulad have you tried ? W. B.

Trust your instincts as Mom and care-giver and know that YES it is very possible he just doesn't like the new formula. It is my belief that most Moms know their babies better than any doctor and certainly better than someone outside the family.

The probiotics are very necessary but there is a better way to get those into his system. I'm sure he will be starting soon with cereal and it can be added to his cereal. By doing this you can return to the formula he likes or try another formula that doesn't have the probiotics. Probiotics is the beneficial flora that resides in the colon area where more than 75% of our immune cells live. It will also help with the acidic levels.

A healthy colon is the first step to a strong and healthy immune system and since the immune system is currently being built in your 9 week old it is very important to have adequate probiotics available at all times. the reason there are fewer probiotics during diarrhea, is because they are continually being flushed out of the system with little or no time to replenish the store in between. I hope this helps?

There is so much more to tell in depth on these subjects – I just can’t go into it all right here. Feel free to cal/email.
