I need to find an exterminator to deal with the recently discovered termites. (Swarm of the fliers, no evidence of colony or tunnels yet, thank goodness!)

Obviously the big guys are Terminex and Orkin and I have heard bad and good about both. Please share your stories, good or bad, about either or recommend someone else and tell me why you liked them.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi, C.:

Call both of these folks and tell them what you heard and see what they say.
Good luck.

Terminix is great... at least in our State.
Very good professional behavior and knowledge.

There are 2 kinds of termites: 1) ground termites... these develop colonies under the ground and mud tunnels above ground to then enter your home etc. (2) swarmers... which are air born termites... these enter your home through any openings and are attracted to light. You only need 1 male and 1 female to then create a "colony" in your home. The swarms are made up of both sexes. Unlike ground termites... these need a "queen" to set up a colony.

So, you apparently have air swarming termites.

Ground Termites, are treated with ground applications of termite poison, or bait stations.
Air termites... once they have colonized within your home, needs to have "tenting" to get rid of them... or they will spread in other colonies throughout your home. There can be several colonies within the same home... with both types of termites.

All the best,
Susan

Do you have anything like Angie's list? In Indy it's a list of service people who have been put on the list because they do excellent work. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau. I don't live there, so that's the best I can do. Just ask around. And look on the internet to see if there is any bad comments about the one you might use.

Good Luck

I rented a house once that had a swarm of termites. It was a termite feast, the interior was pine wood walls. The owner had someone come and treat and then they were done. About 2 weeks later we had another swarm. The next termite inspector did a better job. They ended up replacing about a 6 foot section of 2x4s plus the pine wood walls. It was such a mess to clean, all those wings that fall off. YUCK.

It sounds like you've got some good contact info, make sure they go through the entire house, you don't want to miss any and have a recurrence. Good luck.

We used a smaller, local (we live in Furlong) exterminator when we needed one recently, called Township Pest Control, and the guy did a good job for a reasonable price. FYI, I found him the same way I find any contractor I need, and have for years as we've moved state-to-state, which is to use Angie's List (www.angieslist.com). They're in most cities and the surroundings, and there's a list for Philadelphia area that goes into the surrounding counties. You pay a small annual fee, but you can find listings for almost anything you need-I've gotten painters, electricians, an incredible handyman, housecleaners, veterinarians, exterminators, plumbers and others. They even do doctors now! The service providers are put on the list by someone who has used them. If you use a provider, you go on the site later and fill out a very short form about your experience, the price, etc, and give them a letter grade. It's SO helpful to be able to find someone with a lot of reviews for similar work, all of them As! We've never had a bad experience with someone highly rated on Angie's List. The providers are really motivated b/c they know you're going to grade them and some of them even give coupons or discounts to Angie's List members. I couldn't have moved around so much and not gone crazy without this help. Good luck with your termites!

C.,
We found a bit of termite damage in a previous house that we needed to repair before we sold it...no infestation just evidence of prior existence. I have a co-worker that has been battling termites for years and they use Terminex, I believe....
The hoe inspector told us that in Western PA, if you don't have termites, your neighbor does...Someone near you may have treated recently and from what I've been told it kind of pushes them away--and to the neighboring properties....you might want to let your neighbors know if you get treated so they can be on the lookout too!

Our house had a termite problem before we bought it and the warranty was transferred to us when we bought it. We have had occasional occurrences of the swarmer termites, but they have been taken care of by the company that we use and we have never had another occurrence. They come and check several times a year and are great to deal with. The company is Quality Pest ###-###-####. www.qualitypestservices.com Good luck!!
