I Hate Breakfast

Is anyone else like me? The smell of breakfast first thing in the morning, or any food for that matter, makes me feel nauseous. My two children are the same way. They usually only want to eat substantial amounts of food after at least 10 am. I never eat breakfast (only coffee) and usually have a big lunch and small dinner. The kids drink some milk first thing and that's about it. I have tried forcing them to eat, which you know doesn't work, so I just gave up. After all, I understand. Are we really that abnormal? My husband thinks so. He thinks we should be starving like him! lol

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I didn't eat breakfast when I was younger, either. Used to drive my mother crazy! My son is in K, and I know he does try to eat a little something from the cafeteria at school when he gets there- usually around 8:30. But he always says he never eats but a few bites and I am sure he picks at it (like he does at home). Since they have been reluctant to eat anything much in the morning, I do add Carnation Instant Breakfast to their milk just for my own peace of mind, and do still offer food to them (like a cereal bar or banana), but they never really show any interest It usually goes to waste. I guess I see how it drove my mom crazy. Payback!
I do like Chinese food and cold fried chicken in the morning, but that's about it. Maybe that's the weird part. lol

I can't stand to eat when I first get up. I have no appetite until about 10, like you. It grosses me out to see my husband shoving food in his face first thing, but I have to remind myself that he's different from me. He's actually hungry at that time.

That's one of the reasons I like smoothies for breakfast.

My husband? He eats toast/coffee at home, gets coffee (& maybe a donut) on his way in to work, eats breakfast at his workplace. All between 4 and 7 a.m.

Myself? As long as I've got a cup of Earl Grey and 2 stevia packets, I'm good to go. Sometimes oatmeal.

My son? The Wolfgang Puck of the Breakfast World? He's on an eternal search for "new and different" foods for breakfast. Doesn't like anything "again" as in "I've already HAD cereal!" Ever? In his life? So now it's sooooo yesterday to have cereal. So, yeah, pretty much makes for breakfast hell in my house! LOL

I hate breakfasty things for breakfast. They either make me nauseous OR just make me super super hungry (seriously, 2 eggs? Who does that fill up?).

But a toasted sammie? Dinner leftovers? A microwav meal (not breakfast type) that I can zap?

Good to go.

I save breakfasty things for brunch or breakfast-for-dinner.

I have Frosted Mini Wheats, a banana and orange juice...I have to for energy. Your kids are the same way as you because that's what they are accustomed to. When they start school, they will for sure have to start eating in the mornings.

My kids are not hungry and would rather not eat when they have to get up for shcool. But I make them eat anyway. You always hear Kids that don't eat breakfast don't do as well in school. Not sure if that's true, but it makes sense to me.

My kids do a better job eating breakfast if I get them up earlier and let them wash face, get dressed, fully wake up. It's part of the routine, so they don't even question it. The only time I have trouble is if we oversleep a nd they aren't fully awake and alert.

Oh man, I don't do breakfast! But my 3 year old starts off with a massive bowl of wheat cereal or oatmeal, then goes to yoghurt, then banana, and then whatever else he can think of.

Our daughter has never been a breakfast eater. It is always the last thing she could do on her way to school..

It was either dry raisin toast, maybe a smoothy.. but even then not much of it.

She had to be at school by 7:45 in kinder they ate lunch at 11:20.. so she had to have something. She said she was starving at 10:00..

As she got older she did not have to be at school till 9:00, but her lunch was at 12:30 or 1:00 so again, she had to eat something.

Now that she is in college it is easier, because she can carry stuff with her and eat when ever she wants.

But for all of those other years I just really worked with her as to what she tolerate and keep down.

They may just have slow metabolisms. If they are in school then you need to discuss their cognitive behavior before lunch so that if they are acting lethargic and not able to focus they may have to eat something high in protein, maybe a slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza in the mornings.

Breakfast does not have to be eggs, pancakes, or cereal. It can be a granola bar that is good with vitamins added, a Carnation instant breakfast packet mixed in the milk, a piece of fruit with some peanut butter for dipping it in. Something that will feed their brain but not be the traditional foods.

I hate breakfast early in the day too. I prefer it late in the evening if given a choice. I eat chili sometimes for breakfast, It takes all day for it to digest out of my stomach and I can lay down at nighttime and go to sleep without acid reflux during the nighttime if I eat it early enough in the day.

My mom used to chase me out of the house at 6AM with pop tarts. I'm just not a breakfasty person. I tend to take a fruit bar or oatmeal cookie thing with me and have it later with my 2nd cup of coffee. I would encourage them to drink instant breakfast or yogurt smoothie (my SD likes to take GoGurt to the bus stop) if they can stomach it and then figure they'll have a big lunch later.

I am not an avid breakfast eater. Still I drink a glass of milk or coffee/tea with milk and a light breakfast like a big banana/ a bread slice. Since I need some energy to work. Researches have proven that kids/ adults eating breakfast can perform better in the school or in the office. At least for your kids, start to have some breakfast. So, they will also follow you. One more thing, you don't necessarily eat the breakfast items in the morning. Start with something you like to eat.

I'm the same way, and so is my youngest.
As a matter of fact I used to force my daughter to eat something every morning because I thought it was "good" for her and of course because she "needed" to eat something before school.
All it did was make her nauseous every single day :(
Now she takes a good snack to have at morning break/recess, which happens at 10:00 am.
Don't worry about it, I think our bodies are very different and unique, we don't all conform to a three meal structure. What matters most is that what you eat over the course of a day is healthy and appropriate!

I am not a breakfast person, in fact I usually do not eat much until 10am. The most I eat before 10am is coffee and a piece of toast/bread nothing on it. So no I do not think you are adnormal, it is the way you are.

My daughter is a breakfast eater, cold cereal with no milk and juice. She likes to eat around 8am, does not eat a lot before then but must eat before 9am or she will get headaches.

I think the biggest issue is going to be school, have to be there a certain time, the kids can not just eat whenever. My daughter learned that if you do not eat breakfast before we leave (of course I have it ready for her and tell her it is ready) then she will have to wait till snack time at 10am or lunch at 11:45. A few times she did not eat breakfast, got carried away with something else and would not listen to me to eat... well she was hungry till snack and lunch time. I know that in school I never ate breakfast or at most a cereal bar, but I never was too hungry at all, then again in a public school I could get away with a snack out of my backpack when go between classes (not as easy in a small private school).

I'm wierd. I have a window. If I eat after 8 and before 9, I'm okay. Earlier or later and breakfast doesn't even sound appealing! My sons are the same way. It's a good thing his 'hungry' window is immediately after he wakes up!

I am like you - I am not hungry till around 10am. My 7 yr old son is the same way. My husband and daughter both wake up hungry though. I will make breakfast in the mornings and try to get my son to eat it but he almost never eats a single bite. I will usually eat a little to be a good role model but then I really eat breakfast later around 10 when he is already off at school! I just pack him a good morning snack. I was the same way as a kid and my mom is also the same way. I think some people just are slow to get hungry in the morning. It is like our bodies take longer to wake up or something and we don't feel hunger for a while. I had a roommate in college who just did not understand. She woke up STARVING every day and was ready to wolf down tons of food. I hate sending my son off to school with no food in his stomach. It just feels wrong to me. Most days all I can do is to get him to drink some milk. My mom was a single working mom and I fed myself breakfast as a kid and woke her up in the mornings. She never fretted over me eating much or even thought about it as far as I can remember. In elementary school I remember I made her coffee every morning. That is all she ever had for breakfast. Maybe we worry too much. Our slow to hunger kids are fine as long as they can get a good snack around 10.

Traditional breakfast stuff isn't a big hit around here. We usually have a bit of yogurt or some cubes of cheese in the morning. Both provider good protein without that stuffed feeling. We are, however, huge fans of breakfast for supper. Nothing more fun than pancakes or eggs with bacon and sausage at the end of a long hard day.

I am more like you. I hate breakfast foods and I only drink ice water until I feel hungry which is around 10-11. I eat a good lunch and light dinner and I am good to go.

Hubby has to have his breakfast.

Daughter does eat cereal and something else for breakfast because she opts to study during lunch vs go out for lunch at school. So, when she comes home she is starving and will eat something healthy.

Example like today, I pick her up at 2:30 to take her to meet her cheer squad for competition training. Knowing she'll be hungry, I have fresh berries, banana and water ready for her.

We will occasionaly eat some sausage or bacon but my midday/breakfast is usually soup, salad or leftover dinner from the night before.

No, you are not weird.

OH, no. You're not alone. I have always HATED breakfast. If I eat anything in the morning, I feel like my stomach will eat itself an hour later. I also simply can't force myself to eat. I feel like I will vomit when I eat in the morning. I can't eat before 11:00 am.

I have a couple cups of coffee in the morning. I don't like to eat until 10ish. When I was in high school I got up and went to school and did not eat until I got home. I felt I needed something as I got older and started teaching, so I would gag down a paper cup of dry life cereal and a banana. Even now, when I eat later in the morning, all I can handle is a slimfast or carnation instant breakfast and a banana. My boys will sometimes get up, piddle around, take a run, then eat breakfast in the early afternoon. My cousin, for years, has only eaten dinner. My aunt does not eat until all her jobs for the day are done. My dad never eats until lunch. I guess it's a family thing!

You should consider being a better role model to your children. Your kids are mimicking you and your eating habits.

As others have pointed out, your kids current eating habits will be detrimental to their learning abilities. In school the kids lunch time is not very long and a lot of kids end up throwing their food away. That would mean your kids are going to miss out on breakfast and probably most of lunch.

You really should do a better job of getting their eating habits in line now, so start with yourself & I bet they will follow.

No, you three are not abnormal. There are so many people like you, based on the previous responses. I don't eat until noon myself. My son is 19 and no matter when he gets up he is not hungry for hours after he gets up. When he was younger a yogurt was his standard breakfast. My daughter is hypoglycemic so she is hungry and eats breakfast, mostly eggs. If your kids are doing okay at school then I say not to worry. But keep offering them breakfast, because you never know - they could get a growth spurt and suddenly be hungry in the morning.

NO. You and your kids are not abnormal.
Tell your Husband.

I am like you.
My kids are like your kids.
But I can... get them to eat some fruit in the morning or a cup or yogurt.
Before school.
They don't have lunch... until mid-morning for my son in Kinder, and my daughter lunch is at noon for her. SO... getting something in their tummy... BEFORE going to school, is important. For their well being and ability to function in school.
Otherwise, no food in the tummy, gets a kid hypoglycemic...and then they can't concentrate in school or get tired and fussy or dizzy.
;)

I do NOT, expect my kids, to eat a ton in the morning. They are not like that. But at least, some fruit or yogurt, is sufficient. Before school.
On weekends, we are much more casual about it all.
We all often eat, late in the morning.
Or yes, eat left overs for breakfast!
That is not, abnormal.
