I got my test results back from the doctor yesterday and I still have thyroid which has not changed in three months. The new issue is that I have high cholesterol and he has recommended the American Heart Association diet to get me back in check but provided no further information. Have any of you moms ever done this "diet" and what do you think about it? Also, does anyone else have high cholesterol and how do you manage it without medications? Thank you in advance. :-)

What can I do next?

High cholesterol is correlated with being low thyroid. If you're taking replacement thyroid hormone (e.g., Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Armour and/or Cytomel), you likely are under-dosed. There is a Texas Yahoo group where folks share their labs and experiences:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Texas_Thyroid_Groups/

Many people that are hypo are highly under-medicated. Most mainstream doctors unfortunately treat based on labs and not symptoms (e.g., your high cholesterol is a symptom of low thyroid). Also, that diet is likely to make things worse as your body does need cholesterol to produce hormones because it will limit things like beef, etc. And, many of these foods are important to maintain healthy iron levels. And, iron is really important for thyroid function - it helps get the hormone into the tissue since it can increase the amount of red blood cells in your body.

Also, given your son's mild autism, you may well have genes that pre-dispose you (due to genes) to having problems detoxifying - the detox pathways are often "broken" in folks with autism. An overload of toxins really interferes with normal thyroid function and thus you may need a supra-physiological amount of thyroid hormone for issues to resolve. Few doctors will Rx that, so you may need to find a new doctor. Again, the Texas Thyroid Yahoo group is good for that. Tell them MaryB sent you as they do control membership to avoid SPAM and to avoid lurkers that have intentions to undermine the effectiveness of the group.

Note that I'm not a medical professional - just a patient advocate. I had to be extremely aggressive to get thyroid treatment that helped my symptoms resolve and I feel that it's really important that I share my experiences and knowledge so that others will get the healthcare they need for their thyroid - it controls many, many processes in your body and it will stress just about every other system if you're not properly medicated. I too had high cholesterol at a very young age and many other symptoms of low thyroid over the years. My cholesterol is now in a very healthy range and I eat a diet very high in healthy fats, including red meat several times a week as well as LOTS of nuts and seeds.

Eat oatmeal....regular, old fashioned oatmeal will do the trick, or at least help. Mine went from 220 down to 140 and I did nothing but add oatmeal to my diet. I also exercsie regularly, but I really do feel it was the oatmeal that did the trick. It's worth a try!!!! :-)

Hi Khristina,

My husband and I ordered an incredible book off Amazon titled Adaptogens, Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by Winston and Maimes. It is fascinating. From the book "There is a category of herbs called adaptogens that help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance. They increase the body's resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors and promote normal physiologic function".

The 10 most potent adaptogens on the earth, with the highest therapeutic and healing properties available, are now delievered in a fast acting oral spray, called Tunguska Mist. Go to www.VitalHealth.TBlast.com to learn more.

My husband's grandmother has been weaned off medication for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and depression (her husband passed away last year). She has been taking the Tunguska Mist Pure and it has dramatically helped her body restore balance, or homeostasis. The adaptogens do not cure or mitigate disease, but rather, allow the body to heal itself. They taste great and have made such a difference for our family. I applaud you for seeking alternatives to medication! Through diet, exercise, and proper supplementation, you can improve your health naturally!

Good luck and God Bless:)

Best regards,
N.

I take 500 mg of" no flush", sometimes called "sustained release" Niacin for cholesterol, it is a vitamin so you have to take it a month or so to see results and then it is something you take daily. I have been taking it for 30 years and always are told that my choestrol is below normal. I am not sure of what you mean by you still have thyroid, is it to high or to low are is it just right? It is a simple thing to fix if it is low with out taking drugs, which I stay away from if I can take something natural, that doesn't have a lot of side effects.
