Hi there
I wrote last time. My kids take Juice Plus every day... it is clinically proven to bring the immune system into balance among many other things. It is 17 fruits and veggies and the body is starving for this kind of nutrition. We also take a daily probiotic drink which strengthens the immune system and I have a few remedies I keep in the house if I notice symptoms starting. I know you said you were going to give me a call, so please feel free and I can talk to you about what we do and how to use nutrition as prevention. If she has been on antibiotics her immune system is weak and you need to bring it back into balance.

Hi V.,

Hang in there it will get better. My son has been in daycare for almost 3 years now. It is very normal for then to be sick like this. At least you are getting it over now and she won't miss as much school when she older. Just think too she will have a great immune system. Hang in there it will get better.

When my daughter first started daycare it was the same - she was sick several times in the first 3-4 months - I was basically paying for care and not using it because they kept sending her home - she eventually built up her immune system and did not get sick as much but it took several months. You just have to be patient.

I can completely understand what you are going through! My son was sick for what seemed like the first two years of his little life while in daycare. The first 5 - 6 months I ended up getting sick too. Please don't be too heart broken on this. I know you are aching when your child aches - all you want her to be is happy and healthy. She will eventually not be coming home sick like this all the time and this will help her when she goes to school where the days missed count for something.

I think you should take her to a chiropractor and look at getting her on some vitamins and probiotics.

I used to be a disbeliever - but they have helped me with my sciatica.

I can tell you are fed up. Maybe look into a different daycare situation-- perhaps a home daycare with only 2-3 other kids. She'll be exposed to much less.

PM me with your email address and I will also forward you a work from home opportunity. You will likely still need some childcare, but minimal and they could come to your home.

Good luck!

Is there any way you could possibly move in with parents for a while, sell a car, downsize to a smaller home or apt? Any of these options and changes might be just what you need to be able to stay home with her. I remember a friend of mine having a son that this happened to, getting sick all the time to the point he was hospitalized at All Childrens. Their ped told them that it would be dangerous and a health concern for him to continue in a daycare setting. As hard as it was, the dad left a good job to stay home, moved in with inlaws and took a night job.... At least until the child was older and had a better developed immune system. It's definately something to consider. I know times are tough right now, but this may be your sign and perfect opportunity to scale down, let go of the material things that you don't really need to live and focus on your daughter. I am sure you will never regret it.

Another option is just changing jobs to working nights or finding a small in home daycare.... Something your daughter can tolerate. If it means getting an additional pt job for you or your husband, I would do it. Hope everything works out for you and you are able to come upwith a solution to be able to change the environment for your daughter. I will pray for both of you!!

Hi V.,
Have you taken her to a doctor?

My son was getting sick every third week. After a few months his breathing started to appear like it was quite labored. I finally took him to the doctor and he was borderline walking Pneumonia. We started with breathing treatments. First was Albuteral (spelling?) The something that started with a B. Nebulizer form. We did this from about Oct - Dec. Then we had to start back up again in March or so and stopped when school was out. He was fine for about two months and has started with the stuffy nose thing again. His breathing (chest) doesn't seem to be an issue this time.

As for the Day Care being clean. Well, it might be clean, but it just takes ONE infected hand to touch one item and your child to come right behind the infected one and touch the same thing. I know. It is hard to believe. But look at how many children there are, and how do you know how many people they come in contact with when they get home or.... how many people their parents or Guardians have come in contact with...

As for building her immune system. That will just take time.
As for helping with getting sick, I always like trying natural ways first or in assistance to what a doctor gives.
When it seems like just a cold, I start with a sweet Echinacea tea for my little guy. That with a good night sleep usually takes care of it or at least lets him rest better. Do some research on Natural Immune Boosters, see if any of them fit your needs. I don't know where you are located, but look into your nearest health food store. They are full of information.

If you have not been to a doctor yet, you may want to check in with them about this situation. Better safe than finding out later it has been walking pneumonia all along.
I felt real small after that.

These were the things that have worked for us.

I wish your daughter a speedy recovery and will keep her in my thoughts and Prayers.

I know exactly what you are going through, but I think you will be very happy if you do this, and your daugter will have the greatest health at her daycare.
I have used this place myself, children and many friends where I trust more than any doctor, they treat the cause not the symptoms, it is all about natural things.

My daughter she was about to be Asthmatic, and this doctor who he owns this place and his son, saved her life. I had another daughter who was going to be the rest of her life living on Zantac, she was treated in lest than 4 months, her doctor was amazed with her results and could not say anything to me because it is all about natural remedies. I am talking about babies, I never had to take them to pediatrician for 5 straight years except for regular check ups.
My Ex husband was suffering for 2 years from a condition only this doctor knew what it was. It was very simple but no doctor or hospital we visited could tell us he was about to have stomach ulcer, he had no symptoms after 4 months of treatment and never had them again.

I will give you the information. When you call ask for Dr. Kanawi he is the owner and the most knowledgable or his son.

Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for you, but I am in the same boat. My almost 8 month old started day care at the end of Aug. 2 days before she turned 6 months old (I am a teacher and had to go back to work) She has been sick since the second week. Ear infections, colds, sinus infections, allergic reactions to the carpets and detergents, and the flu this past week. We were going to get her a flu shot but she was never well enough to get one! It has been a constant battle and countless antibiotics and trips to the dr. Same as you, our daycare seems clean enough I see the cleaning materials and smell them when I come in(not overpowering just enough to know they are used) and I know they wash sheets and toys everynight.I'm with you, I WISH I could work from home but I just haven't found an opportunity that would work for my family. I own two side businesses (pampered chef and stroller strides) but it's not enough to take over my full time salary. It's so difficult having little ones that are constantly sick! I guess I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. If you find a solution please let me know!!!

Hi V., I understand your frustration, but I have to tell you this is very normal even for kids not in day care. I have a 1 1/2 and 3 year old and I work from home, my kids do not attend day care and they are sick every few months! Sometimes it seams like multiple times a month, but it's the same sickness lingering. I was so fend up with it I had my house checked for mold (none) and put my kids on $50 month vitamins-they still get sick! The dr said it's germs every where- church, grocery store, etc.. And it's normal; they have to build a resistance. Just want to you know it's not day care and your not alone!

Hi,
Go online and learn what things you can do to build her immune system naturally. I'm a nurse and I totally believe in medicine but when it isn't really helping you have to look wherever you can. One thing I know is good is Sambucol (available at drug and healthfood stores. It's a little pricey but CVS just had it with $7.00 off and I had one of their coupons for $3.50 off so I paid $2.50 for it. They have wafers and liquid. The wafers taste aweful but the liquid is great. It's elderberry and it builds the immune system. Also if she's not allergic feed her all kinds of berries. (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries - preferrably organic) My grandkids like a scope of berries on top of pancakes for breakfast. (with a dallop of cool whip)
Wishing you the best! :)

My daughter did a year in daycare and except for a couple weeks here and there, she was sick that ENTIRE year. I kept bringing her to the doctor and they kept telling me that it was normal, and that she'd have great immunity when she started school. After that year I was able to be home with her, but then last year we decided to send her to preschool. I have to say, the doctor was right. Every other kid in her class got sick, but she never did. I know it is so hard to see your baby ill but it WILL build her immunity and she will be better off in the long run.

Hi,
I know how you are feeling, My son is only 4 and just entered VPK and he was never in daycare or ever needed a babysitter since I am home 24/7. Needless to say his first month of school he spent in the ER and Dr's office so sick that I thought he was dying. He missed 2 weeks of the first month of school but it does get better. After about 6 weeks of being sick on and off he hasn't been sick since and its been almost 2 months now so I'm hoping he is over it. It will get better. Look on the bright side, when your little girl does get older and go to school she shouldn't get sick as easy like my son did because she has already been exposed to it where as my son was never exposed to anything.

the other day i thought let me give him cow milk again - because hot chocolate with cow milk is ohh so good - and 2 weeks later he got really sick with an ear infection!!
we have a 12 month old now and he only drank organic soy formula and now they both drink soy or almond milk only.
i really hope this helps!

How old is she? I would start by asking the daycare how often they are bleaching EVERY SINGLE toy. They should be placing any toys that are put into a babies mouth into a separate bin to be cleaned every time they are used. When I worked in an infant center, we had a bleach water solution and would spray every item down and let it dry. Just wiping it is not good enough. I would also consider having a family friend care for her for about a week after she is well. When you send her back out into the world shortly after being sick, her immune system is week and she is most likely to become reinfected or to be exposed to something new. Give her a few tablespoons of homemade yogurt every day, twice a day if possible. Also, if she's older than one year, honey is a great daily regimen for supporting a healthy immune system. Garlic also has anti-viral and anti-infective properties. You can stew whole garlic in spaghetti sauce or butternut squash soup and then crush it after it's cooked, this will give a sweeter, less garlicy flavor. Ask that her sheets and blankets are kept separate from the other children and wash weekly. Avoid pacifiers that dangle from her clothing from a clip, this just drags along the ground and collects germs. WE will keep her in our prayers, if you are still breastfeeding, keep it up, it's her best defense ever.

Have you tried giving her some vitamins? Talk with your childs doctor about the concerns your having and you might have to start looking at other daycares. check with the Better Business Bureau and see if the daycare that your daughter goes to has any complaints or if they have failed any health issue tests given by the state (if they are certified). I hope this helps. My prayers to your daughter.

Maybe you should put her in a private home for day care? You can have some one do a structured day with her. So she can learn as well as play. I am sure there are moms who would be willing to babysit your daughter and they may even have another child or children in their care! I sent my youngest to Wexford; and she seldom got sick. The smaller the day care the less germs around. I wish you luck! If you are in the N. Broward area, Wexford Day Care is a very good pre-school, day care center! With a loving staff.

Having worked in a day care I can tell you its usually the other parents who are not cleaning, not the school. Things to consider when worrying about this issue, how long has your daughter been in pre-school? If this is her first year, being sick 2-3 times per month is very VERY normal. Also, have you considered alternatives? A home daycare might be a better option, or maybe family? Usually you can do half days for well, half the price. If you can avoid nap time, you can avoid much of the sickness. Do you have a highschool aged niece or nephew that would want to take over the afternoons? This may cost a little more, but I bet you will break even with less time off work. Can you change your work schedule at all? Building up your daughters immune system is important, but this can be done in other ways, preschool daycare is not the only option. Grocery stores, doctor's offices, church, friends, parks, all of these places expose children to germs. If you can cut back on the time she spends at daycare or just eliminate it I would suggest that.

Hi. I know this is frustrating.
How old is she? Old enough to chew SambuActin elderberry and Vitamin C supplement? My daughter has been taking it daily since last fall when she had pneumonia.
Also, give your child probiotics. They are the friendly bacteria we are all supposed to have in our gut. If she is old enough to eat you can feed her plain yogurt with NO sugar added, which contains probiotics. Or you can buy a powdered probiotic supplement that you add to a beverage once a day. If this is a baby you could put it in her bottle or when I nursed my daughter as an infant I put a dab of the powder on my nipple before putting it in her mouth. Probiotics help the immune system because they keep the yeast in our body in balance. Yeast is natrually occuring, but it is a fungus and if you take antibiotics all your bacteria dies and yeast overgrows and weakens the immune system. So then you must replenish the probiotics. Got it? This is so important.
Next, does your daughter digest dairy well? Most little kids don't. Dairy foods then cause a lot of mucus and make the kids more likely to get sick, the germs getting caught in all that goopy goo in hteir ear nose and throat. So maybe you could back off dairy. If she drinks milk, replace it with almond milk. even Publix sells that now. If she's old enough to speak, you can explain why you are switching her milk (if she protests...). Let her know that you think milk and cheese make her snotty and make her more likely to be sick. chances are she does not like to be sick and she will listen. Avoid cheese, especially while she is sick. I only give my daughter aged cheddar and Very rarely. Aged cheddar has broken down the lactose already. Ice cream and milk are especially hard to digest and very snot-causing. Yogurt is actually the gentlest. but if you suspect a dairy issue, get goat yogurt (much easier for humans to digest) instead of cow if you are using that for probiotics rather than the powder. Or you could use soy yogurt, but it is usually sugary and negates our purpose here.
If you are afraid your child won't get enough calcium if you cut out milk, don't worry. There's lots of calcium in broccoli, dark leafy greens, almonds, sesame, almond milk, almond butter (like peanut butter but from almonds). Plus sometimes the nutmilk is fortified, if you like that. We give my daughter a multvitamin from our health food store. Animal Parade is the kind. They are chewable.
To re-cap: elderberry, probiotics, avoid dairy, multi-vitamin. Got it!? Good luck!

Children continue to get sick as they are exposed to other children - those who attend daycare at a young age get all of their illnesses then; others who are home with mom get their illnesses during school years, but it all evens out by about age 10. I didn't see her age anywhere, but can you give her Airborne (my kids like power pixies - like pixie stix) & get her to drink lots of OJ to strengthen her immune system at home? Can she wash her hands or can you provide antibacterial wipes & remind her to use them often, even while at daycare? Best wishes to you -

I can well understand your pain and frustation... How old is your daughter and how long has she going to daycare? My kids went to daycare and I felt every week I was sitting in Dr. office with something or other. And this was a great daycare, very clean. Other kids got sick too but mine always got sick (they still do when they are 10,7,7) My kids don't have good immune system (they were nursed for 7 to 10 months).. it is not something you are doing or you can do. I get frustated and angry because 10 kids would be playing and my kids would wash hands with soap and then Germx and still get sick. Others will eat from dirty hands and still healthy. If your daughter is very small, look for someone who takes care at home and has fewer children .. may be another mom/friend who you can pay to take care of your daughter also for 6 months to a year. That way she is exposed to less germs and might do better. I am sorry .. have courage. This will pass too.

What kind of sick???? Is it her throat, ears, feever, runny/green yucky nose, vomiting???? If it is her throat, ears, or nose you may consider taking her to an ENT (ear, nose & throat doctor). She could just have issues with her tonsils, adenoids, or ears not draining properly. If it is either of these things, by removing them you can remove the root cause of getting sick. Both of my boys had to have tubes and adenoids removed. Their adenoids were large and prone to infection which backed up in to their ears and did not drain properly. The minute the tubes and adenoids were removed it was like night and day!!!! Dr. Wade Cressman is an amazing ENT!!! He has offices all over tampa and he is one of those Drs. that wont do anything he doesn't feel is necessary. You may just try it and see what he (or any ENT) says.

Good luck and I will pray for you little one!

I can fully sympathize. My son and daughter were sick for 6 weeks straight while in daycare and culminated with my son having to be hospitalized for RSV/Pneumonia. I had to make a life choice and am now a SAHM, it's not the decision I wanted but it is the only thing that gave us all peace.

Could you hold a meeting with the other parents/daycare workers? Time to thoroughly clean the room? Remind parents to not have their children at daycare when they are ill? Could the daycare set up an isolation area for those who are?

Any time a child is in a day care setting they are more apt to get sick. For one thing I am sure they are not cleaning their toys every day. They more than likely keep sick children instead of telling the parents they have to make other arrangements when they are sick. That is really the main reason children get sick is because they are around other sick children. My girls very seldom got sick when they were little. But I hired a private sitter when I had to work instead of day care. That is something you should consider.

Just want to reiterate what others have said. Get her on some quality viatmins and probiotics. Make sure she does not eat food with refined sugar in it, this can be one of the biggest culprits. Cut down on processed foods and dairy prodcuts. If she drinks a lot of milk, cut this back a lot - it causes mucus build up. I make my little one a smoothie everyday with fresh and frozen orgaic fruit, water, a tiny bit of organic unfiltered apple juice, and some kind of greens like fresh spinach or kale or chard. With this along with wholesome meals and snacks, she has not gotten sick in over a year, not even the sniffles. Eating and feeding healthy can be expensive and time consuming, but in the end it is cheaper and takes up less time that being sick. I am a working mom too, I know how it can be. Good luck!

Sorry, I know what you are going through but I am afraid to tell you it'll take 6-9 months. Maybe she has allergies and they are triggering her immune system and she is catching colds easily? How old is she? My son got a lot better when we put him on allergy meds.

V.,

I feel your pain and know how heartbreaking it is, especially because I work too and know what it is like to wish you didn't have to have your child exposed to that setting. Have you tried changing daycare to one that has less kids? See if your company allows you to work from home doing what you now do? Just continue building up her immunity. My method is giving my son a teaspoon of garlic tea with ginger before he leaves for school. Do that for about a week and see if she improves. All the best
