I Can't Get My Son to Stop coughing.....HELP!!

I am exhausted so hopefully I get this all out right!!

My son will be a year old next week, and he has had this horrible cough for 2 days now that is making him absolutley MISERABLE!! I already took him the the doctor, had him tested for strep (going around at daycare) and of course there is nothing they can do for him. I have already tried the shower (steam), elevating his bed, the cool mist humidifier and plug in vaporizer, vicks on the feet...all with no success. He coughs constantly which wakes him up the second he falls asleep. He has hardly slept at all the past 2 days and I am exhausted as well. When he is awake he coughs and cries because he is so frusterated. I am literally pulling my hair out trying to think of anything else I can do.

What can I do next?

I'm not at home right now, so I'm not sure of the name of it, but I think that it's PediaSure cough... it's just straight for coughs, it doesn't have any of the decongestant stuff in it or any of the other stuff in it that the docs don't like that they are pulling off the shelves. I got mine at a hospital pharmacy, but they probably have it at a Walgreen's or something. It works for my boys, at least getting them to sleep at night. I don't use it during the day, only at night.

What does his cough sound like? If it sounds like a barking seal, I know it sounds funny but that is what croup sounds exactly like, then it is croup and they need alburtural (sp?) and a breathing machine. My triplets got this quite frequently.

get a cool mist humidifyer turn it WAY up, like soaking wet. Leave the door open just a crack.
It may be postnasal drip...does he have allergies? Maybe an antihistamin like clariton, would work better than a cough med.
I'd call your doc and ask for the dosage.
IMO cough meds are a waste of $$.
My ped says vics can actually irritate a childs delicate airways!
popcicals can numb the throat...???
Good luck

Before you do this ask the doctor, your son is a few years younger then my kids. I have tired this for myself and my kids and it always works. Put Vicks vapor rub on the soles of his feet. Don't skimp on it either. Then put a pair of socks on. My experience has been that the cough is less or stops with in 30 minutes. I have no idea if Vicks is safe for kids under a year or not so be sure to run it by the doctor. I hope he feels better soon!

I have always kept a bottle of Triaminic night time on hand for the occasions where my kiddos desperately needed sleep, but a cough was keeping them awake. It has a touch of benadryl in it that helps them sleep as well as helping the cough settle down just enough. Yes, I know...there are mothers out there who would rather die than medicate their children....this is what we do at MY house...for MY children. Yes, I realize that most cold meds are symptom control but isn't that what they are suffering from?! Hmmm....

Since you've had him to the doc already, you can rest assured that he is okay...and it will pass...and sleep will definitely help that!

I have never tried the vicks on the feet thing... my mom always put it on our chests... Breath it right in then...
If his throat is sore or raspy mix up some hot water with lemon and a touch of honey... The honey helps coat the throat so if there is any irritation it soothes it. But at 1 yr old it may be safer to just use some sugar or something else sweet...
Chamomile tea is a relaxant and my kids just love the warm sleepy time tea.
Is it possibly because of a post nasal drip or seasonal allergy? Perhaps some antihistamine... Not sure if they have infant doses but could call the dr and see what they recomend... In a pinch you could take the meds and divide the dose down until you get to his age... I think its about 1/4 of a teaspoon... (check for yourself.)
Trial and error... But on a side note, my guy has had the most horrendous runny nose for the last week, I'm thinking its a seasonal thing...
Good luck!!!

Hi H.-
It sounds like he is coughing a lot more when he is laying down, is that right? If he has been tested for everything and it is not a bug it could be allergies, he is to young to be tested for those but look at you and your husband and what you both may be allergic to. This season has been especially harsh on people with allergies (take it from me) that would explain the coughing because his snot is running down the back of his throat and irritating it causing his to cough. I would call your ped and ask the correct dose of benadryl for him and try it to see if it will dry him up that is what I did for my daughter (it keep her up at night also) , it's worth a shot especially if you are at your wits end. Oh one more thing is he cutting teeth? That may bring on the runny nose too benadryl still helps to dry the little ones up. Good Luck!

I definitely agree with putting Vics on the feet!! I learned about this trick about six months ago (during cold season) and I've never used so much Vics in my life!! (LOL) Lather up the feet, put on socks and WALLAH~ you have a cough free child in about a half hour.

Many Blessings~
