I Can't Believe This.

My husband comes in from outside and says, You are not going to believe this...

My dog has been digging furiously at the fence for a while. We thought that she was hunting frogs, whom seem to like our yard and hibernate there. So he caught her at it today and went out to yell at her, when she pulls out something by the roots, lays down and starts gnawing on something. Turns out it wasn't frogs she was after....it was our neighbors sweet potatoes! Certainly explains the orange poop I found yesterday. Really what kind of crazy dog goes through that much trouble for sweet potatoes? ARGGHH. So now I need to confess to our neighbor....but since she has destroyed part of his garden an apology doesn't seem enough. Any suggestions on what I should do to make amends? We are pretty good friends with these neighbors and I don't think they will be that upset...but I feel so bad!

Ok when you stop laughing, what should I do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, I talked with the neighbor today. He says he thought he already pulled all the sweet potatoes last week. I am guess that when he dug some up that was the scent our dog caught and why she was on a digging frenzy. He did think it was pretty funny, and wasn't at all worried about it, she just got the left overs. :) His son hurt his foot in a soccer game and he asked my husband (who is a chiro) to look at it, so I figure for a little free care we are even.

Thanks ladies.

Sounds like you need to buy her some sweet potatoes!
(wish we could grow things in our garden, but it's a balmy 34 degrees out)

Yup. Dogs LOVE sweet potatoes and blueberries and avocado.

One of the foods we rotate has them in it, but whenever I cook them at home I always give him the cooked skins and any leftovers. He would all but stand on his head for them, and he'd do that if he could figure out how. I gotta tell ya though... watching him "lip pick" blueberries is TOO funny. Didn't know your lips could get that agile, pup!

I think I'd go to the store and pick out the purdiest, organic sweet potatoes in the bin and give them to your neighbor with a funny card explaining this hilarious dilemma :)

So the sweet potatoes grew under the fence. Heck he was just retrieving the ones that were his. :)

If my neighbors dog did this to my garden the laugh of it all would be enough for me.

Should have videoed your dog.... sent it to that Funniest pets tv show.

Hilarious.

But, your dog was digging AT the fence... so, technically, were the potatoes the ones that was on YOUR side of the fence or theirs?
I imagine your dog has been doing this for awhile.
Not just today?

There is dog food with Sweet potatoes in it. Your dog needs the hormones in this food.
As for the neighbor offer to help him repair the garden. Get some logs and place them along side the fence. Your dog won't be able to dig under them.

HAHA! That is GREAT!

i would confess with a sweet potato plant or seeds, jowever that works. (I am so not a gardner:)) I would also offer to help her 're-plant' her garden....preferably away from your fence line. Lol :) good Luck!

Well I certainly learned something new today...I had NO idea that dogs liked Sweet Potatoes!!! I think that the free look see by your hubby more than makes up for the missing tubers...especially since the neighbor thought he had already dug them all up!!
Now your job is to figure out a way to stop your potato loving pooch from doing the same thing again next year!!
I am seriously still chuckling about this....silly pooch!!!

Dogs love roots. Our dogs kept digging in our backyard and ate the roots of my magnolia tree. Killed the tree, but probably saved our foundation. Have to look at the bright side. :)

Go confess and they will probably laugh it off. Sweet potatoes aren't hard to grow.

That explains the sweet potato dog biscuits I saw at Cost Plus yesterday. I was looking through the window waiting for my MIL and SIL's who were still in the store. I thought I wasn't understanding what I was seeing ;-). Clever doggy! I think buying him Sweet Potatos at the local farmers market is a great idea. Unfortunately you are also going to have to some work to either keep her from the fence or dig deep and make a barrier that she can't get through so she doesn't do this again.....
