Hi there,
Has anyone gotten pregnant with the IUD? I have the Mirena and I dont' think I'm late or anything, I actually don't remember when my last period was, I just don't think about it, I totally trust the IUD, but latley I have to pee all the time again, and I feel hungry so much, and so often. Like when I wake in the night with my 8 month old I find myself going downstairs to find something to eat. Maybe it's just a hormonal shift, he's nursing less during the day, eating more foods. I just don't have a lot of money to go waste 15$ on a pregnancy test for being overly paranoid, the non hormonal IUD worked great for 3 years between my last two kids. I really could NOT handle another pregnancy and baby right now. I of course would keep it, but I'm just kinda scared. Any thoughts would help. Thanks!
Wow, what an amazing amount of responses. I took many peoples advice and got the dollar store pregnancy test on Friday, but then my husband got stuck in Novato due to the floods and the freeway being closed so decided not to take it until he was home and settled, in case it was positive. But I started bleeding early the next morning!! I guess the peeing and extra hunger were a hormonal PMS thing. Who knows, I don't really have to pee as often as I did the day I posted that. Who knows what it was about. Maybe just my emotions getting the best of me. LOL......... thanks so much for the amazing amount of responses. I will always come here for questions!

Don't be scared, take a breath and breathe...then call whoever you see for health care and make an appointment. I had similar symptoms my IUD was out of place, not doing its job and threatening my health. (I feel like it was my body's way of letting me know was something wrong.) The sooner you know the better. You can go back enjoying life.

My sister got pregnant with an IUD because it had dropped down slightly and she did not know. You should test and if you are pregnant make sure to go into the Dr asap because there can be complications if you get pregnant with an IUD including a risk of tubal pregnancy. I am happy to report her pregnancy was fine and I now have a 3 year old nephew as a result! So just test and if positive seek medical attention.

Please, for your own health's sake, take a pregnancy test - it will be worth your peace of mind. And if you are pregnant, you'll want to know as soon as possible, since the IUD may cause complications. Good luck to you!

I know of a few moms who have gotten pregnant with. Go to the dollar store for tests. If you test positive then either buy the good kind or call the Dr. to have one done in the office.

Oh, wow - I know how you feel. $15 is not a waste - what cost can you put on your peace of mind? But the test won't show anything until you are at least two weeks past a period. Can you have a blood test at your clinic? Usually that is covered under insurance. Worrying about it probably isn't very productive. At 8 months I was hungrier because my hormones were getting back to normal and my baby nursed exclusively until 9 months and my body was getting depleted. Be sure you are eating healthy foods, even for snacks.
Good luck - and don't worry!

Go to the dollar store. That's how i found out. Those takes work just as well as a $15 one. I never buy the drug store ones. I was on the Nuva Ring and that's how I found out as well. Cravings, tiredness and of course...nauseau!

Hi W.,
I have never known any birth control to work 100% besides not having intercourse:) Take a test, you do not want to have a pregnancy develop while your IUD is in! You are also nursing which will keep your periods from starting. It would be worth the money to have your health and possible fetus come first. If you need help financially, I will buy you a test:)

Hi W.
My friend was is the same situation that you are in. She also had an IUD and Yes she got pregnant. Her doctor told her that is very rare to get pregnant on a IUD, but not impossible. Her doctor told her it was 1 out of several thousand women will get pregnant with an IUD. I would spend the $15.00 for a pregnancy test just for your piece of mind. My friends doctor also told her that if she was pregnant she should remove her IUD ASAP as it could cause a miscarriage. I would start by taking a pregnancy test and then consult your doctor on your choices if it is positive. Best of luck to you.

I can understand not wanting to spend the money on a pregnancy test but if there is any chance you could be pregnant, you need to know and get that IUD out. You could buy one of those cheap test strips on the internet rather than an expensive test at the store. Also, you could call your doctor and have them test you. I hope all turns out well.

Hello I saw your post about the IUD. I had an IUD (without the hormones for 2 years) and I had to have my obgyn take it out because after 2 years I had horrible pain, bleeding, and my body was rejecting it. A month later my (2) cousins who had the IUD you are talking about started to have complications and had theirs removed as well. My cousins best friend DID get pregnant WITH the IUD and the Dr. removed it immediatly she was told it could harm the baby or make her miscarry down the road so I would say either spend the $ on your copay and have the Dr. give you the pregnancy test or spend the $ on the test. Better safe than sorry and becareful with the IUD I know way too many people who have had to have theirs taken out and had severe problems. I wish you the best.

It can never hurt to test, but I've experienced similar things with my IUD and I haven't been pregnant. Some of the "side effects" of the IUD don't necessarily show up right away. In the info booklet you get with Mirena it gives a list of side effects like weight gain, acne, missed periods, etc. and lists the percentage of women that have them during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd... years. It goes up from the first to second year & the #'s don't change much over the last few years of using the IUD. According to their research, you have less of a chance getting pregnant w/ the IUD than w/ regular BC.

Hi W.... surprize pregnancies are possible for any method of birth control. In fact, my daughter got pregnant with the IUD also... her third child, so don't waste any time 'wondering' if your'e pregnant. The 99cent store even carries pregnancy tests, but I don't know how accurate they really are. But having had 3 children myself, you seem to be showing very strong symptoms of being pregnant! And if you indeed are, the IUD needs to come out, of course. Best of luck to you... Sincerely, CJ

Just a thought ... if you are pregnant, the longer you leave the IUD in, the more chances there are a of a miscarriage. The IUD won't necessarily attach to the baby, but there is a small chance. Better safe than sorry.

I understand not wanting to pay that money. If you have good insurance you could have your OB/GYN order a blood test and it would likely be fully covered ( I know my lab work is always fully covered...no copay unlike an office visit). OR simply go to the Dollar store/99cent store... they have them there for $1 and they are accurate. I have to test quite frequently due to different meds, etc... and I use those to save $$ and to have that peace of mind.

Why don't you go buy a pregnancy test from the Dollar Store? The odds of getting pregnant with an IUD are incredibly small, but that way you can put your mind at ease.

Hi W.!
I am on the Mirena as well. I haven't gotten pregnant while on it, but I think a visit to the dr. or buying a test will calm your anxiety. You don't want to get yourself worked up for nothing.
Since I have been on the Mirena - I have had some cramping and when I thought I was on the final months of having lighter periods or none at all. I get a very having period that has lasted up to 2 weeks.
Hunger - I am constantly hungary and go to the bathroom frequently. But, our eating habits can go up & down during the year.
Put your worries at ease, it may be nothing to worry about.

I have the same IUD. I think you should test if you are worried. If you are pregnant, the sooner you know, the better. It's pretty unlikely......but you'll feel better if you know either way. You can get a store brand test for around $5 or call your Dr and get a test there. (I don't have to pay for that, but mayber you do.) I don't know about you, but I don't get a period with the Mirena, so the only sign I would have that I was pregnant would be hunger like you described...or labor pains! Be on the cautious side and just take a test. :0) Good Luck!

Best to see your doctor, with an IUD they might not charge you for the test. I am one of those women who did get pregnant with an IUD. If I had not gone to the doctor My tube would have ruptured. It was an unfortunate situation with lots of tears, but I went on to have 3 more children. It is safer to let your doctor make the decision, and not let anymore time go by. Sanity may be as simple as a phone call.

I doubt you are pregnant, but it wouldn't hurt to buy a pregnancy test at the dollar store or 99 cent store, for peace of mind (if they have pregnancy tests there). I would call them first, before driving over there. The items they carry seems to change from time to time.

I also have the Mirena, which I had inserted when my twins were 8 weeks old. (they are now 22mos.) I have not had a period for 19 months. I was told that it would slow or completely stop your menstrual flow so that is why you aren't bleeding. It's freaky, but soooo nice!
As far as peeing and being hungry, are you breastfeeding? That will make anyone extra hungry!
I believe the chances of getting preg with the IUD are less then 1%.
You should be ok- but if taking a test is going to ease your mind- I heard the dollar store has $1 tests!

Hi W. S,
I know how you feel because I got pregnant for the fourth time & was reduced to tears at the thought of "another one" on top of the three I had. I was on birth control, but not an IUD - that came later & was fool proof for 15+ years.
I wouldn't waste time on the home kit. I'd go straight to my OB/GYN & get a clear answer right off the bat. You are either pregnant or not & the sooner you find out the better. If your not pregnant, whew! but you can address whatever is going on. If you are pregnant, you can make your choices based on accurate information.
All the best,

I've never used the IUD but I would say just wait a while longer. Do you not get a period when you're using it? Maybe wait four weeks and if you haven't gotten your period or if the symptoms persist or more show up (morning sickness or whatever) then take a test. Your hormones are still very active after just eight months AND you're still breastfeeding! I'm still nursing my almost 20 month old and my hormones are still involved in that! Your body is going through a lot of things, it could be just that.
Hang in there!

Quite often, the Mirena reduces, or completely eliminates menstrual periods. If you are worried that you could be pregnant, you can always test to be sure, but it is most likely just the Mirena doing its job.

i'm on the mirena too, and i have a 9-month-old. i go through times where i'm hungry all of the time, and tired, and even have cravings. i think it's mainly related to the nursing, and maybe you could try taking prenatal vitamins (if you aren't already)? when i actually remember to take them, it seems to help with my appetite. as for having to pee, i have no idea about that :). oh, and i haven't had a real period at all since i got mirena when the baby was 8 weeks. between the iud and breastfeeding, i think it's highly unlikely to have much of a period. of course, if you're truly worried, i would get the pregnancy test--for free, or even for the $15. your peace of mind is worth way more than that!

If your pregnant or think you might be you can go to a Carenet Pregnancy Center. They have them all over the country and give free test and its confidential. The people are really friendly too. They also have a lot of other service and information that might be helpful to you. Don't wait or put it off because it could possibly hurt you or the baby. I hope this helps.

Immediately check the phone directory for a Planned Parenthood or other similar facility who can see you, test for pregnancy and counsel you on your options in the event you are pregnant. I know everyone's financial situation is different but if this is as stressful as you believe it may be worth the $15 to be tested so you know where you are. Your symptoms may also be a health issue, like diabetes. You need to be checked by a physician to rule out problems and ease your mind. G. V

If you have an IUD (either kind) and suspect pregnancy, ALWAYS get tested ASAP. The risk of an ectopic pregnancy (which can be life-threatening) is higher with an IUD. Any generic brand will do-- I've seen them for $6 in the pharmacy. Some clinics offer testing for free. Also, if the test is positive your practitioner will want to remove the IUD. The sooner the IUD is removed, the lower the risk of miscarriage. Don't forget that irregular (or no) bleeding is a common effect of the Mirena and does not necessarily indicate pregnancy in the absence of other symptoms. I am a nurse-midwife.
