I am the mom of a wonderful, sweet, smart and shy 4 yearl old boy. I know a few moms with kids where I live and they are all very nice. But my son is shy and is a late talker. We just discovered that he has a very severe milk allergy and celiac disease (he lacks the enzyme to fully digest and process gluten) HE WAS ALREADY EVALUATED BY A NEUROLOGIST AND HE IS IN OT AND SPEECH THERAPY!!!!
Anyway I am looking for a group, a mom, I AM LOOKING FOR A FRIEND, who has gone or is going trough the same thing I have; someone to share ideas, thoughts, tears, laughs, frustrations and joys of having a late talking child. The moms I know are all nice but just don't comprehend/ understand what is like to a child that has a speech delay. My son just can't communicate with kids to their level yet so is frustrating to him.
Is there anybody who maybe live in uspate New York? some mom who is in the same boat as I am?
I am here and I need someone to talk to, e mail to?
Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Does your son go to the town's preschool? If not, you need to get him evaluated because he sounds like he needs it. If he is, have you met any moms during any of the class events? I am sure they would understand what you are going through.

Look into the organization Cherab for kids with apraxia. They have a mailing list/ online support group as well as the website Apraxia kids. I believe the founder of the Cherab group is based in NY but her children are teenagers/young adults now. She may know of a local group though. My 3 1/2 year old has apraxia and I have found these groups very helpful in finding knowledge and just having people that understand. I hope things get better for him and you, I know progress is slow and painstaking and sometimes you and they just want to scream trying to communicate is so hard.

Have your son been evaluated by a Speech and Language pathologist? Check out the website ASHA.org. Read and play with your son. Point out everything that you are doing, colors, actions, objects, animals, people, as much as possible to help your son catch up. Have your son watch your mouth when you say words, encourage him to produce the words as well. If you cannot say the words, help him to point to what he wants. Best of luck.

my son had a speech delay, very frustrating and upsetting, i know. we got him evaluated and he qualified for speech services, he got one on one speech therapy for about a year and a half, it made a huge difference. he was declassified this past june and is doing wonderfully. all the things that we knew were in there can really shine now, and he is so much happier and less frustrated.... we all are. if you havent had your son evaluated, do so. and if he doesnt qualify, or if he is on the fence like mine was, push for the services anyway. often, after a birthday or half birthday, the qualification requirements change. my doc had told me to wait to have him evaluated because he knew that he wouldnt qualify at one age, but might at the next. and he was right :)
