My surgery is scheduled Thursday the 14th. Any words of wisdom? I have had all my babies naturally, this will be my first time cut into. I'm having it all removed as it is no good anymore.

What can I do next?

Try to relax! I am a nurse at Logan Regional Hospital and I have seen many C-Sections. The doctors work fast so you don't have to lay there in the O.R. long. Recovery won't be as fun, but just be sure to stay on top of your pain medications and use icepacks on your incision continuously for the first few days. You will do great! Good luck!!

A couple of resources would be www.johnleemd.com and Hormone Balance by Kristine klitzke. Both have good information on hysterectomies.

I just had a hysterectomy 11/28. My only words of wisdom is rest and more rest. Give time for body to heal. I felt so much better post surgery I wanted to much more than I should of.
Good luck-

I had my hysterectomy in October 07. They did mine vaginally - no visible incision at all. If you haven't been "cut into" before, this is an easier way to do it. The only problem is that if you are having the surgery because of cancer, they don't see the lymph nodes this way. My recovery time was about a week.

Good luck.

I have not had a hysterectomy, but I have recently had surgery. If you can, rest, rest, rest. Even when you're starting to feel better and think you can take on running your household and basically starting your regular schedule, start verrrrry slowly. If you need help from friends and neighbors, ask for it. Just take it easy, if you're prescribed pain meds, take them but don't drive (really, don't!). Don't be shy about calling your doc if you have ANY questions after the surgery. But really, my most important piece of advice is to take your recovery seriously. Even if you think you can go at 100%, don't. Your body will let you know you're overdoing it. Any surgery, no matter how minor, is traumatic to the body. Take it easy, take it slow and good luck!!

You will be fine. I had mine in october 07. It was a painful after the surgery but that is expected but the pain meds are wonderful & the pain decreases. after about 3 weeks no more pain. I will keep you in my prayers.

I have not yet had mine, but it's a possibility within the next few months. I found a great website that helped me a lot with advice and support. www.hystersisters.com.

It's comprised of people who are considering or are scheduled for surgery, and of people who have had the surgery. It really is an excellent group of folks.

Good luck with the procedure.

Hi T.,
I had a hysterectomy two years ago and I agree with some of the of the answers of rest, rest, rest! You will FEEL like you can do more, but don't push yourself. Also, I was up and moving the same evening as my surgery (which was @ 6:30 pm) and I believe that that helped in my shortening my recovery time. You know your body so follow your body signals. Good luck!

I wish I would have seen this earlier. I had surgery about 2 years ago. recovery time was not bad for me I felt great after 3 weeks. really listen to your doctors and don't do any heavy lifting, or moving furniture. I hope you have a strong support system, my husband was the best help. Take the time you need, I took very good care of my scar, kept it clean and used Noni lotion to heal my scar quicker. I can not explain how well I, I can feel like a real mom and function like a human being, instead of being down for 3-4 days sometimes. I hope everything goes well.

T.,
I had one last spring and did too much because I felt good. Take care of yourself and like others have said REST! Let your body heal. I have noticed that I have gained alot of weight but it might just be stress of life. Try and eat healthy and exercise when you are healed.
I hope everything goes well.

i have had all of my children via a vaginal birth and had to have a c-section cut to remove many female parts over the years.
is the surgeon doing a c-section cut or thru the bellybutton area?....ask the surgeon for the less evasive surgery if possible.
having a hysterectomy has actually made my relationship with my husband even more fulfilling since we do not have to be concerned about pregnancy and we can have all the "fun" in the world..
discuss with your doctor though about HRT or if estravin (over-the-counter herbal medicine) would work for you...my suggestion, if taking the esravin, is to take the extra-strength since it seems to cover more possible difficulties...
keep your head up and be honest with your doctor and your surgeon about your feelings and concerns (no matter how minor you may think they are!)...

I don't know how it compares, but I got an infection in my incision sight after my first c-section. The doctor's said it was from doing too much too soon. Second one I didn't take the pain meds and that helped me rests because I didn't feel like doing much until I had healed. You don't say how young your kids are, but try to rest! Hope it all goes well.
