My son, who is now almost 3, had two hypospadias surgeries--one when he was 7 months and one when he was 14 months. Because his case was severe, the surgeon had to do it in two stages. After the first surgery he had a catheter in that drained into a bag, so we had to drain that every couple of hours, but the second surgery he had a catheter that just drained into the diaper. For our son, the area was all wrapped up and had what looked like plastic wrap over it for about 5-6 days so you didn't have to worry about the poop getting on there and you didn't really see the wound. There were two visits after surgery--one to remove the packing, and another to remove the catheter. My son did very well and did not seem phased by it at all. We only gave him pain meds for a day or two and then he seemed like he didn't need them. He was happy-go-lucky! The second surgery he did experience some bladder spasms (because of the catheter) that caused him some pain, so they gave us medicine to lessen the spasms. They would last for a couple of minutes at most.

I know it is nerve-wracking as I have been through it twice! Doesn't seem fair to have to put your little guy through this, but it will be better in the end, and he will never remember it.

Oh...I am not sure if you work, but I did take about a week off after each surgery to be with him and care for him, and I am glad that I did that.

Good luck! Feel free to message me if you want more info.

My son had the surgery at around the same age and he did great. Make sure you meet the doctors and feel comfortable with them. We were able to see our son RIGHT AFTER surgery. They brought us into recovery and we were there when our little one woke up. It was wonderful to see him so peaceful and to be there as he woke up. The surgery was about an hour long and I am SOOOOOO happy we did it.

Hello!
I know this is a scary time for you (and your son!), but everything will be OK! Both my sons were born with hypospaidas. They had their surgeries around 12 months at Children's Hospital in Boston. My oldest acted like nothing happened and was running around the next day. My youngest was a big groggy/ill from the anesthesia, but was himself within a day or two. They didn't seem to be in much pain in that area, and only needed the one surgery.
Good luck!

My son had it done when he was 8 months old and I remember it not being as bad as you can imagine. Taking him away from us was hard, but he had a "kiddie cocktail", which affects short term memory and so he wasn't sad when he left us. That was a great relief to know he wouldn't remember leaving us.

After the surgery (ours took 2 hours longer than expected, but nothing to worry about), he was very hungry and nursed for a long time. One of my favorite memories of nursing him.

The next couple of nights were long keeping track of his meds. (pain and antibiotics). He also had a catheter that stayed in for a week, but it didn't seem to bother him. We just had a bandage over it. He was happy and playing like usual in a couple of days!

Good luck, hope your experience is uneventful and successful!

BTW, he is 9 now and has never had any issues, I think when he is a teenager is supposed to go to a urologist just to follow up.

My son had a hypospadias repair at 7 months old. He was only away from us for two hours then we could see him again. The only part he disliked was he couldn't eat for so many hours before the surgery. When he woke up from the surgery all he wanted to do was eat. You get to go home about an hour after he wakes up. He will have what looks like a band aide and the doctor will tell you how to take care of it. My son's doctor give him a good pain killer that I give to my son for a week. Because it had to hurt having it work on. It was not that hard on him to get the surgery, just hurt him for a little afterwards. I didn't put him in toys that required him to put press on the sore, like the exerciser.
