Hyland's Teething Tablets - Child Proof Lid NOT Toddler Proof!

So they just recently put Hyland's Teething Tablets back on the market...complete with a "child proof" lid. Well as I was researching preschools on my computer, my 2 1/2 year got the bottle out of the diaper bag and opened it and she and my 15 month old ate most of them, ack! I called Hyland's and they said they could eat 4-5 bottles and not be hurt - to just give them plenty of fluid and their bodies will flush out what they do not need. I can't believe this just happened...they were within my eyesight the entire time, I just did not realize what my sneaky little girl was doing. :/ Has anyone else had this happen? I am giving them lots of fluids and keeping a close eye on them, but they seem to be perfectly okay. I tried calling poison control as well and it kept me on hold forever...still waiting...anyway...I feel like a dummy now. Guess every single bottle is going on top of the fridge now!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the feedback! My kiddos were fine...they didn't get tired or anything. I have heard of some children having a bad reaction to them, but thankfully mine did not.

Don't worry... The ingredients in hylands are really safe. It's true that a kid could eat several jars and not have any problem. My neighbors son did this a few years ago. He ate three jars of teething tablets and one of the cold calm and had no side effects. Thatsbthe beauty of homeopathic medicines.

I use Homeopathy all the time, and my kids have eaten 200CK vials and they were fine. From my understanding, you can't overdose on homeopathic medicines. Hope this helps!

In response to Gamma G's response, yes Belladonna (the plant) is a deadly plant, homeopathy dilutes it to minute portions, safe for consumption, and Homeopathy uses the law of similars, heres a link for more information:http://www.holisticonline.com/Homeopathy/homeo_principles...

Your children are fine. The Hylands people are right. With homeopathy, you can't really overdose. It's just a huge waste of money to eat them all in one sitting. Sorry about that!

they are back on the market?? Woohoo! - sorry - nothing works as good as those though. Thanks for the heads up - I will be sure to keep them up with my other medications out of reach of the children!

I never leave medication of any kind, regardless of the packaging, within reach of my children. The vitamins and medications that are taken on a daily basis are on the top of the fridge. The rest are in a combination lock box.

My 2 year old can open ANY bottle he finds, which is how I learned not to leave anything within his reach. I tested him one day by leaving empty prescription bottles out, and sure enough, I watched from the doorway as he opened every single one of them (and this was when he was about a year and a half.)

You are not alone. I spent last Monday in the ER, because I left my pantry unlocked. My daughter managed to pull a little chair over and climb some shelves to get into some meds. I was gone for maybe three minutes, if even that! It was a Sam's bottle with 350 capsules. No idea how many she ate or if she even ate any at all. She got the experience of drinking charcoal and then we had to stay for six hours observation. My heart broke for her and I was a nervous wreck about the possible side effects. I felt like a complete idiot, since it was all so preventable. Now all meds are stored in a locked fishing tackle box on a shelf high enough that I need a step ladder. They can be so sneaky sometimes, it's scary! BTW...Poison control has always been a great resource. Stay on hold. THey will ease your fears if nothing else.

When I was a child... I ate an ENTIRE bottle of vitamins. Kids chewables.
Well the Pediatrician and Pharmacist... said no worries. Just drink lots of water.
I was, fine.

My oldest and youngest both can get 85% of any childproof thing open....Pill bottles or whatever else.

We have had to have all things dangerous behind a padlocked cabinet since my oldest slept walked into the kitchen one night and grabbed three knife while climbing onto of counter...most scary moment up until my youngest started moving....

We are having to drill a place to lock lock our fridge now too because of my two Houdini's. We have tried every type of none permanent locks....They figure everyone of them out!

As for the teething tablets, they are pretty harmless. I would give milk and just keep an eye to kiddo.

My kids have ingested everything from the silicone moisture packets they put in shoes boxes to almost a whole tube of sunscreen...

Always call Poison Control to make sure.

they are so sneaky when they want to be!!!

Child proof only means someone over the age of 80 can't open it. My dad always had my kids open bottles for him.

Seriously my kids could open most child proof bottles around the age of two. If you don't want your kids getting into them then, yup, top of the fridge. :)

Yes, my little guy opened a child-proof bottle of Motrin I didn't know i'd dropped a couple of months ago when he was 26 months, didn't eat any, thank God, and I realized that NOTHING is now child-proof ~ it's ALL up high now!

yes, childproof does not = toddler proof! Scary world.

& as a head's up: I call & complain to every company who puts out something unsafe.....especially those bathroom cleaners which look so appetizingly like juice to kids - oh, yeah, the ones with lemons/oranges on the label. How stupidly unsafe!

One more mom here to say that her 2 yr old ate at least a half a bottle...I called poison control just to be sure...they said it was fine, she WAS, in fact, fine. They are sugar pills, my understanding of homeopathy is that the worst that can happen with an "overdose" is to actually cause the symptoms of whatever you are trying to treat.

A girlfriend's daughter ate a whole bottle when she was about 4 yrs. They called poison control who said she'd be fine, and the only possible reaction would that she'd be drowsy. She had a 3 hr nap that day and was perfectly fine after!

My cousin just had a FB post of how her two year old opened a bottle of Tylenol- a trip to the ER and he's fine, but still!! These little Houdinis are giving us a run for our money for sure! I'm sure your daughter will be fine....

I thought that the main ingredient in those was Bella Donna. I had to take our granddaughter to the ER after using them, according to the label too. She was lethargic and almost non responsive. If they are only sugar pills why use them? Why not give the child some Motrin to reduce the inflammation? The ER doc told me that they were basically poison and they should never be used...that's my experience with them.
